Rumor: Jason Pierre Paul Seriously Injures Hand in Accident
Posted on July 5, 2015 by Jason Fitzgerald

According to a report from WINZ in Florida, Giants star defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul has been involved in a serious accident involving fireworks which may have severely injured his hand. Pierre-Paul is currently a franchise player for the Giants, but does not have an active contract with the team. He had been hoping to negotiate a long term extension with the Giants that would pay him in excess of $14 million per season. His one year tender offer was worth $14.8 million and now it could be worth nothing.

The Giants can opt to pull the tender offer from Pierre-Paul at any time which would, in turn, allow him to become an unrestricted free agent, at a time when he may be completely unable to play football. Even if he had signed the contract he would have no protection since the guarantee in the contract is for football injury only, meaning the Giants could place him on a non-Football injury list and avoid payment completely if they so desired.

Teams and players can negotiate lower value payments to a player on NFI, as a bit of a goodwill gesture. They can also negotiate a very low value regular contract to compensate the player and keep available a route for extension during the year if the injury is not as serious as some of the rumors suggest. Such a deal would likely pay a minimum salary if on IR, PUP, NFI, or some other list and a base rate similar to the final year of his rookie contract.

Either way this is a potentially devastating injury (if true) that could have been prevented. This is why teams often put certain clauses in contracts about performing certain activities and why agents should steer their players against doing things that can void potential earnings. This could be a cautionary tale for years to come for any potential free agent, franchise player, or restricted player who does not have an active contract and is thinking of doing something potentially dangerous to his body. This has the makings of a sad story for Pierre-Paul.

Does not sound like its as serious an injury as was initially reported:

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...e=twitter.com&utm_campaign=RVacchiano+Twitter

Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul injured his hand in a Fourth of July fireworks accident on Saturday, an NFL source confirmed to the Daily News.

A radio host for WINZ in Miami tweeted that Pierre-Paul “severely injured” his hand, and multiple reports had confirmed Pierre-Paul suffered an injury. The Giants did not immediately confirm or deny the incident.

Pierre-Paul is not in danger of losing his hand and the injury is not career-threatening, according to a source. He burned his fingertips and part of his hand, a team source told the Daily News, and doctors will continue to examine him to determine if he suffered any nerve damage.

VACCHIANO: JPP, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?

As of Sunday night the Giants were still trying to get information on what exactly happened and how bad Pierre-Paul’s hand is, but a team source indicated the injury isn’t as bad as the team initially feared.

The only story more unbelievable was that kid up in Maine who died lighting fireworks off from his head.

JPP had his 60 million offer taken off the table by the Giants, I just read.

If that's true, I feel so bad for him.

I heard the same thing about his $60MM offer. And, depending upon nature of the injury, he could be placed on non-football injury list and not receive his $14.8MM franchise tender.

Expensive bunch of fireworks.

Still in the hospital . Reports coming out that his agent refused to let the Giants examine him. This could be ugly

The guys on Sirius said the injury is more serious than first reported. And indicated that he was "ripped" when the accident happened. He's going to lose a ton of money by this stupid move.

This is not exactly a revelation, but fireworks are dangerous, if you're gonna play with them, you best use extreme caution.

You can't be too careful with this stuff. I saw a kid lose two fingers, I saw another guy lose his arm (completely severed), and worst of all, I saw a guy practically cut in half at the belly, needless to say he was dead before he hit the ground.

Thats why I have a healthy respect/fear for fireworks and the damage they can do if you're not careful. I'm not gonna lie and say I stopped playing with them. I continued to shoot them off on the 4th of July, but I was EXTREMELY cautious.

Lack of info on JPP hand burn mystery ‘disconcerting’: source

Three days after one of their most important players badly injured himself in a July 4th fireworks mishap, no one from the Giants had seen Jason Pierre-Paul as of day’s end Tuesday, despite the fact there has been a contingent of team officials in South Florida since Monday afternoon.

“Disconcerting’’ is a word a team source used to describe the scenario, which is growing more curious with every moment that passes without any information coming from the JPP camp.

The source insisted team officials have not been barred from seeing Pierre-Paul, but that they are “respectfully waiting for the process’’ to play itself out. Asked what exactly that “process’’ is, the source was unsure.

There are many potential issues at play here, including HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), which is a law that protects the privacy of a patient, regulating disclosure of the patient’s medical information.

The primary reason team officials — a group of which is believed to include vice president of medical services Ronnie Barnes — is in south Florida is to ensure Pierre-Paul’s well-being and make sure he’s getting the best medical attention possible.

Whether or not Pierre-Paul will be ready for the start of training camp July 30 or the regular-season opener Sept. 13 in Dallas, and whether he plays for the $14.8 million “franchise tag’’ tender offer or signs a long-term deal are secondary issues for the Giants.

The fact Pierre-Paul remained in Jackson Memorial Hospital through Tuesday raised speculation the burns he reportedly sustained on both hands could be as serious as third-degree burns. Third-degree burns, according to doctors, require skin grafting, which is a painful process that surely will not allow JPP to be ready for the start of training camp.

The most likely football scenario will be Pierre-Paul being placed on the non-football injury list (NFI) at the start of camp. That protects the team from having to pay him if he’s unable to play.

Teams can keep a player on the NFI list until the end of training camp, and as long as they activate him to the regular roster by then he is eligible to play in regular-season games. If the player remains on the NFI list to start the regular season, he is not eligible to come off the list until Week 6, at the earliest.

But those are secondary concerns as the Giants officials wait to see Pierre-Paul for the first time to assess how serious his injuries are.

The 26-year-old defensive end reportedly suffered significant burns on both of his hands. Reports — none of which have been substantiated by Pierre-Paul’s representatives or the Giants — have varied regarding how serious the injuries are and how much time away from the game it might cost him.

Judy Flagg, a former nursing coordinator in the burn center at New York Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan, said if the burns are third-degree burns they likely would require skin grafts to the burn areas — a process that could take weeks to heal.

“With a third-degree burn, there would never be any regeneration of the skin in the affected area, and that would require grafting of skin from another part of the body to cover the area of the burn,’’ Flagg said. “Because this injury is to his hand, he’s definitely going to need physical therapy.

“And, with grafting, you’re actually creating another burn when you take a layer of skin from another area of the body, you’re taking a superficial layer so you really have two areas where you have burns to heal.’’

Complicating the Pierre-Paul situation is the fact he is not under contract, which is one reason the team has been reticent to make any public statements about the incident. Another reason is that information has been coming to them at a frustratingly slow pace, which is why they sent officials to Florida.

Pierre-Paul, who skipped the Giants’ offseason program and minicamp, has not yet signed the $14.8 million franchise tag offer. Even when he does sign the tender offer, that salary would not be guaranteed if he’s unable to play because of a non-football injury.

There also was rampant speculation Tuesday that Pierre-Paul was being investigated for possible criminal activity for use of illegal fireworks. But an official at the Broward County Sheriff’s office told The Post they were not investigating Pierre-Paul because police were not called to the house where the incident took place nor did they transport him to the hospital. So, as the Broward County public information officer said, there is no police report involving Pierre-Paul.

Comments from Pierre-Paul’s teammates, most of whom are on vacation until training camp begins, had been nonexistent until Tuesday, when Giants receiver Victor Cruz spoke to SiriusXM Radio and said he was “shocked’’ to hear of JPP’s incident.

“I was definitely, obviously shocked just like everyone else to hear the news,” Cruz said. “Obviously it’s not something that you want to hear about a teammate. I have reached out to him, I sent him a text message, but obviously he’s probably nowhere near a phone right now. But I just hope he’s healthy. I just hope everything goes positively and that he’s able to be with us come training camp. That’s the only thing a guy like myself can ask for right now.”

I'd say the initial reports about him losing fingers may be accurate. The doctors have shut down all info, obviously at his request. We probably won't know the truth for a few weeks
