New York Sack Exchange, Part Deux

I've never seen the NY Sack Exchange play but I do know that they were dominant especially Klecko and Gastineau.

So my question is, what made them great and how does our current DLine stack up to them talent wise. I would think our guys now are rated higher coming out of college than any of those guys were so I wonder if they can duplicate the havoc.

Was the original sack exchange ahead of their time before blocking schemes were thoroughly developed or is our current dline lacking the motor those guys had?

The original sack exchange was in a 4-3 D, while part 2 is in a 3-4. And part 1 did not have anyone being suspended 4 games for smoking pot !

Gastineau was an especially good pass rusher. Back in the day, he was in the opponents backfield almost every play. There's no one on this current (can't say about Williams yet, we'll have to see) team that would compare to his pure ability in that one facet of the game.

Joe Klecko was all around very versatile player. He could play multiple positions and could get to the QB from all of them. Closest I can compare him to is Kris Jenkins of the early 80's. This is the guy that really made the DL as good as it was.

The rest were guys that would simply win their matchups regularly. It was truly "pick your poison" because they were so talented and overloaded along the DL.

In comparison, I have seen nothing to indicate the players today could be as productive getting to the QB as those players were. They are very good, don't get me wrong and they are probably better at stopping the run. But all in all, if you were asking me who I would want and they would both be at their best? I am going with the sack exchange. Being a kid and watching Gastineau make a damn fool out of himself after sacking the QB really drew me to the team, I must admit. The guy was a complete idiot, but as a kid you can't always readily tell that.

I am still pissed at Mark for costing is the brown's paluoff game with his bone headed play.... But agree IMHO they were flat out better.... could play the run as well as rush the passer.

I think it had a lot to do with how the all complemented each other. Lyons and Salaam were so good at stopping the running game that left Klecko and Gastineau free to go after the QB at will.

Two things the Sack Exchange lacked were a defining win or longevity. They only played together for the 1980 & 1981 seasons. 1981 was their breakout season, but they never played a full season together after that. Klecko was hurt in 1982 and missed most of that season. By 1983, Abdul Salaam was replaced as a starter and he was off the roster by 84 (when we kicked Klecko inside and replaced him with 1st rounder Ron Faurot). For all of the memories we have of the Sack Exchange, I think part of it is that they left us wanting more.

Typical of being a Jets fan, left thinking about what could have been.

But all of them were on the team in the 70's..1981 was the year both Klecko and Gastineau both had 20 sacks(Klecko had 20.5)LOL.. The total for the bunch was 53.5 sacks in 81..

Gastineau & Lyons were rookies in '79. Lyons, Klecko and Salaam played regularly that year, but Gastineau only started 1 game. Lawrence Pillars was the other DE.

They only played together as a unit for 2 full seasons -- 80 & 81 -- but that 81 season was amazing and earned them the nickname.

..... if Gastineau were playing today he to would be suspended for smoking pot .... Gastineau was a regular in both the NYC and LI club scene and was regularly seen "wacked out of his mind"

Actually Gastineau would be suspended for 3 things today. Pot, Cocaine & physical abuse to his 6 foot model wife who he fought with on a regular basis ! I'm afraid Klecko had issues with PED's or steroids as well.

True Gastineau played in passing situations as a rookie because he sucked against the run.. But the baby Sack exchange was there for passing plays..Walker 2

Those guys that make the fireman Ed, sack exchange 2.0, Klecko petition.

Met the owner recently. Nice guy.

This is ridiculous. You guys really are setting yourselves up for disappointment. Richardson will be out for 4 games and that is enough to make our DL a very good line that gets close to the QB, but never gets sacks. When Richardson gets back, they still will not be as good the original sack exchange. Bragging about these guys is ridiculous. I absolutely do think they'll be one of the best defensive lines in the league this season, but they won't have statistics like the original sack exchange. They don't have that kind of ability.

Our dline will be fantastic this season. Maybe not SE level but amazing.

I'm excited for the schemes that Bowles can come up with

Do you always speak in such extremes? I don't see how it's "ridiculous" to expect dominance from a group which has already proven itself to be among the best defensive lines in the league. And they added a player who many people felt was the best player in the draft in Leonard Williams.

Sacks are nice, but I'll take a combination of pass rush and run defense over a line which thrives mainly in pressuring the QB.
