Another Year, Another Competition Tilted in Geno Smith's Favor

Yeah that's what I took out of it to. I've been squawking for a QB competition, but it's a moot point now, Smith is playing better. he played well in camp last year also.

Don't think we'll be able to see where Smith is at until the bye. jets should handle the Browns. After that the schedule stiffens. The Fish game before the bye should be a good indicator.
yeah, smith's issues as a pro have not been playing adequately in training camp/pre season so i'm not going to pass judgement on him turning any corner just yet..

disappointing that fitzpatrick isn't pushing him..

smith has lived a charmed life as far as being the starter at the beginning of season here three years running..

I disagree. Geno has been inconsistent every training camp and every preseason and evey season...I think too many dont want to give credit where credit is due. He has been the definition of inconsistent. To pretend he hasnt screams biased post.

In case someone wasnt sure if the posts that Geno has never struggled in training camp and its only when the lights go on...which is total bullshit and selective memory:

completing 60% with 2 INTs and 2 sacks...vs this camp with 1 total sack, over 75% comp, and 0 INTs...that's playing well (versus Fitz with 2 lost fumbles and a pick 6...BTW)...watch out for posts with an agenda from the geno hater cast of misfits who cant root for the jersey the player is wearing (you know who you are). He has definitely improved...even if its camp and means nothing, he has shown improvement. He may crumble in the preseason...surely may, but 1 year ago at this time, these were the geno reports:

Geno Smith
Analysis: Much like Tuesday, the defense brought a lot of different blitzes and showed a number of different coverages. Smith got sacked a couple of times, had Quinton Coples bat a pass down, and saw defenders like Demario Davis and Nick Bellore get there to break up would-be completions. He also wasn't helped by drops, most especially when he had rookie Jace Amaro wide open on a check-down. He did execute the offense's one big highlight, however, by getting Dimitri Patterson to bite on a pump-fake before connecting with Greg Salas for an easy, long touchdown.

Stats (team drills): 7-for-15, two sacks, one interception on Wednesday. Overall, Smith is 36-for-58, seven sacks, two interceptions.

Number of first-team reps: 17 on Wednesday (70.8 percent), 88 to date (76.5 percent)

Quote from Smith: "The main thing is that we continue to stay focused. We’re all levelheaded. No one’s here saying we cornered the marked on anything. We believe that we have to put the work in and if we do so then we’ll have a good team."

Quote from Ryan: "The bad news is we have to protect the ball, and we know it offensively. That's really what we talk about."

Geno did play well in camp last year but not this well. Still would like to see him put it all together in a game, even preseason, I'll feel much better about it.

I honestly can't believe people get excited about training camp reports about ANY player (Geno or otherwise)
Outside of injury reports there is nothing less useful than a training camp report.

It's just a bunch of fluff by a bunch of reporters looking for something to talk about. Every year there are reports about this guy or that guy breaking out, and largely it tends to be a bunch of overstatement by beat reporters trying to one up each other, and look like a football prophet.

There is no malice. There is no real adversity for the players. Intensity has been dialed back out of fear of people getting hurt in a 7 on 7 drill.

An occasional practice might get chippy between a couple of guys battling for roster spots, but the established guys aren't emptying the gas tank in August.

Im a Jets fan. if Pee-wee Herman was our QB, I'd be rooting for him to be successful. hate every Jet player you want to. Once they're on the team, Im not going to root against them.

I want the guy who gives us the best chance to win...that guy will be the one that turns it over least...so far that guy is Geno till it isnt...so on opening day, ill be rooting for Geno to throw for 350, 4 TDs, and have a perfect QBR. Sorry if every time he steps on teh field I dont root for him to throw 3 picks so I can rush on the board and say "Geno sucks!" if Geno sucks, the Jets suck...so rooting for one is the same as rooting for the other...

nobody here is rooting for smith to fail, you're just being dramatic for the sake of it.. but pretending him being the village idiot last season doesn't help shape people's opinion on our starting QB you're kidding only yourself.. that & lousy QB play as well, of course.. but if he's the starter I hope he plays well & we win games.. what jet fan wouldn't..

Saw this quote in one of the training camp articles and he makes a good point. Not many people focused on the type of throws that Geno has been asked to make. Will his success continue once teams game plan and focus on these plays?

By the way, this is why Gailey is a great hire. He tailors his offense around his qbs.

1. Though Geno Smith has largely looked good in training camp, he hasn’t been asked to make a ton of difficult throws. A lot of his passes are quick and short. Will the bombs ever come? Maybe not: perhaps Chan Gailey figures the way to make Smith succeed is by only making simple passes.

I've noticed that in the tweets. Also In the few reps he's had, they seem to be letting Petty air it out. Again your probably right Gailey is suiting the play calls to the skills of his players.

I suspect if at mid season Smith is 6-2 with 14 TD's and 4 picks they will be 100% behind him. hell, a year or so ago sg was one of the most vocal Rex supporters on the net.

Fans like winners, all spinning aside, Smith has put on a horrible show for the last two years. If he turns it around, in real games, against good D's, people will support him.

perhaps you should read post #160 in this very thread..

but i do see you have no interest in addressing smith being the village idiot last year.. that helped form the negative attitudes towards him here.. it certainly did for me..

hard to be a leader being a horses ass..

kind of like trying to laugh off his career numbers a few days ago.. i watched him play the last two years & i certainly didn't find his game play or attitude "funny" at all..

but don't worry, you can stop ignoring my thoughts on him being a dope, i won't waste my time asking you your thoughts on the subject anymore..

A large part of Fitz's problem is motivation, I suspect. He already knows there is no way he will start - and as a result, his focus just isn't there...

if his focus isnt there, cut his ass. We dont need Vick 2.0. I think its more likely his game isnt there, but if the Harvard guy isn't focused, put that education to use someplace else.
