Jets RB preview: Cast includes supporting actors but no stars

Rich Cimini, ESPN Staff Writer

Breaking down the New York Jets' roster, unit by unit, in preparation for training camp:

Position: Running back

Chris Ivory has led the Jets in rushing the past two seasons. Elsa/Getty Images
Projected starters: Chris Ivory, Tommy Bohanon (FB).

Projected backups: Bilal Powell, Zac Stacy, Stevan Ridley.

Notables on the bubble: Daryl Richardson.

Player to watch: Ivory is the closest thing the Jets have to a true No. 1 back (even though he never has carried the ball 200 times in a season). His rushing total (821 yards) and yards per carry (4.1) took a dip last season, but the analytic geeks say he was a more productive runner in 2014 than 2013 because he compiled more "effective" yards. Whatever. With Ridley coming off a major injury, and with Stacy coming off a down year, the Jets need Ivory to be their No. 1. This is a contract year for him, so he should be highly motivated.

Top storyline: The competition. It should be intense because of the numbers at the position. Ivory and Powell are virtual locks to make the team, but what about Stacy and Ridley? Do they keep one? Both? Can Richardson crash the party? With only one practice a day, reps are at a premium, so it could be tough to give each running back a fair amount of work on the practice field and in the preseason games. It will be a juggling act, one that could continue throughout the season. By the way, Bohanon is no lock, either.

Training camp will be a success if ... : Stacy or Ridley pushes Ivory for the starting job. In the end, it'll probably be running back by committee, but they'll need more than Ivory and Powell to generate a top-10 rushing attack -- and that's what it will take to stay balanced and keep the pressure off Geno Smith. Ridley was the New England Patriots' leading rusher in 2012, Stacy was the St. Louis Rams' leader in 2013. One, or both, have to get back to that level.

Wild card: Will Ridley be cleared for training camp? He's eight months removed from knee surgery, so don't be surprised if he begins camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list. He was limited to positional drills and straight-ahead running throughout the spring. If healthy, Ridley has a chance to be a contributor. He was a 1,200-yard runner for the Patriots in '12, so you know the talent is there. He won't be happy if he's not on the active roster. He gets a $20,000 roster bonus if he's on the 53-man roster for Week 1 and another $21,875 for every game he's active.

By the numbers: From 2009 to 2014 -- aka the Rex Ryan era -- the Jets rushed for an NFL-best 13,156 yards. It's what they do. Coach Todd Bowles, who wants a balanced offense, won't abandon the running game.

Think the Jets are very good at RB. As Cimini says, no stars, and no real break away runner, but they will pound the ball between the tackles with power

I would love to see what numbers Ivory would put up if he carried the ball 250+ times in a season. I think he could be a legitimate feature back.

Ivory runs with a lot of violence. I'm not sure he could carry the ball 250 times and not come up injured. One of the good things about the Jets cast of RB's is they are all punishing runners. When Ivory starts getting dinged up, Ridley will come in, with a fresh set of legs, and pound the ball between the tackles until Ivory is 100% again. Wear defenses down.

No explosive back, but Powell is our best pass blocker, and is a decent receiver.

You may be right, about the durability, but I would love to see them try. I am not asking them to give him the ball 300+ times per year. In his 2 seasons with the Jets, Ivory has had 20 or more carries in 3 games, but he has had 13 games with 10 or fewer carries. He was our best back last year and was not used enough in my opinion. I don't need to see him with 25 carries a game, but 15 - 18 would be nice.

Completely agree about Powell -- he does everything well, nothing great. Nice piece to have on the team.

I think we'll do just fine with the stable of backs we have on the roster right now. I personally feel Ivory is one of the most underrated backs in the league. While we don't have that "home run hitter" type of back, I think we'll see a lot of 4-5 yards/attempt and very few for loses or no-gain. Throw in the additions to the wide receiving corp and teams won't be able to stack the box like they have the past few years.

Agree

There were 1st downs last season that teams unbelievably had 10 guys in the box. No matter who the QB is we have to get better play and move these D's off the line

I'm surprised opponents didn't just throw out 11 d-linemen on 1st down. Even my wife who hates football knew what was coming.

Yep the addition of Marshall should help with that, and if Smith can get open deep a few times teams will have to respect that.

I love Chris Ivory and think that the Jets are always trying to make him second fiddle is just dumb.

Like someone said earlier, Ivory runs with violence. He's hungry for that extra yard and it shows every time he touches the ball. I love that over any RB that dances waiting for the hole to open up.

I'm curious to see how Gailey uses him this season. I expect Iviry to win the job but to split time, more than he should, with a pass catching RB.

I always thought the Jets should have picked up Vereen.

I agree. Like I said earlier, I would love to see him get 16-18 carries a game. With 260 - 280 carries he probably would get about 1,200 yards on the season. And he is the type of runner who will wear down defenses if you keep feeding him. As long as he can stay healthy.

I think people are going to be very surprised the type of offense the Jets are going to run this year. Every one is expecting the spread that Gailey has been running recently.

Interestingly enough when asked why he was so quick to hire Gailey when he has never worked with him Bowles said he loved how he ran the Steelers O.

The 2 years Gailey was with Pitts. They ran the ball more then any team in the league. Think they are going to play to protect Smith by not putting much on him, and pounding the ball between the tackles.

IMO there will be a lot of touches to go around. Smith is only going to be asked to not turn the ball over, and make a few plays a game.

All 4 RB's are between the tackles kind of guys. A lot of fresh legs, but no body is really going to be a featured back

Ivory does run with violence, but he never seems take violent hits...big difference, and one worth noting. He can easily become a featured back if they just gave him a chance to be one.

Not sure. I remember Lamont Jordan. Was a very violent runner for the Jets. Great at finishing games off. Plowing over people for first downs. Was getting about the same amount of carries as Ivory. Went to the Raiders who tried to make him a feature back, was injured all the time, and very in effective.

One of the biggest raps on Ivory besides that he can't catch, is that he is dinged up all the time when over worked. now they have three sledge hammers. One has had an excellent season with the Pats. Why burn out your best RB. Spread the joy, keep fresh legs on the field, and pound the defense.
