Jets WR preview: Will Brandon Marshall be hero or villain?

Breaking down the New York Jets' roster, unit by unit, in preparation for training camp:

Position: Wide receiver

Projected starters: Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker

Projected backups: Jeremy Kerley, Devin Smith, DeVier Posey, T.J. Graham

Notables on the bubble: Quincy Enunwa, Shaquelle Evans, Saalim Hakim, Chris Owusu, Walter Powell.

Player to watch: Quite frankly, Marshall is one of the keys to the entire season. If healthy and in the right frame of mind, he will be the Jets' first legitimate No. 1 receiver since Santonio Holmes, circa 2010. Marshall reeled off seven straight 1,000-yard seasons before injuries slowed him down in 2014, resulting in his worst numbers since his rookie year in '06. The Jets, who gave up a fifth-round pick for Marshall, expect him to be highly motivated. In a way, it's similar to the Holmes situation in 2010: They get a talented player who wore out his welcome on his previous team. The difference is Holmes was 26, Marshall is 31. All eyes will be on Marshall, waiting to see if (when?) he lives down to his reputation as a combustible personality. Will there be public displays of frustration when Geno Smith sails a pass over his head?

Top storyline: My, how times have changed. A year ago, the big story was the battle for the No. 2 spot, the starting position opposite Decker. Now the first three jobs appear to be solid, with Marshall, Decker and Kerley, meaning the competition starts at No. 4 -- an indication of how much the talent level has improved. Smith (second-round pick) will be somewhere in the mix, which means there will be six returning players angling for one or two spots. Special teams could be the deciding factor, which helps Graham, Owusu, Powell and Hakim. Posey has something else in his favor -- he's a Mike Maccagnan favorite from their days together in Houston.

Training camp will be a success if ...: Marshall and Decker are healthy for Week 1. Everybody knows what they can do as players, so they don't need to strut their stuff in the preseason. Both dealt with injuries last season and preserving them for the regular season is imperative.

Wild card: Smith is a textbook example of a "wild card." Despite his draft status, he will arrive at his first pro camp with a big question mark: Can he take his college game to the NFL? At Ohio State, he blew past cornerbacks and racked up an FBS-leading 28 yards per catch. Smith could fill the team's void as a deep threat, but he'll have to expand his repertoire because you can't run past corners on a consistent basis in the NFL. There will be growing pains for Smith, who will be behind after missing minicamp due to the birth of his first child.

By the numbers: Only three players have more receptions than Marshall (279) over the last three seasons -- Andre Johnson (306), Antonio Brown (305) and Demaryius Thomas (297). Over the same span, Marshall is tied with tight end Jimmy Graham for the most drops -- 24.

Got to agree with Cimini here. Marshall is the key to Smith's future. And the Jets' immediate chances. Marshall wants to be a TV guy when he is done in the NFL. One of his problems in Chicago was he was flying to NY every Tuesday to do a TV show. (His day off) The media and the fans saw it as an indication he wasn't all in, and got on his case about dedication. Marshall is happy to be in NY, as he said "he can take a cab to the studio". Having two big years in NYC will go a long way in securing a TV career in 2 years.

Marshall seems to have adopted Smith. Staying in his house during OTA's. Willing to bet they will be room mates in camp. Smith's success is very important to Marshall's future. Cimini is right, how is Marshall going to react if Smith stars sailing balls over his head? He can be very explosive when things don't go well. If they connect well, will be very good for both of their futures.

This will be very interesting to watch as the season unfolds.

Marshall consistently seems to get a bad rap in the press. He had a combustible personality and was constantly getting himself in trouble bot on and off the field early in his career. He was diagnosed with a mental illness, borderline personality disorder, which leads to his poor behavior. How can Cimini call himself a journalist and make no mention of this in the column. He has undergone treatment and while not a perfect citizen on the field, he rarely had issues during hi years as a Bear. He had one incident where he called out Robbie Gould in front of the team and was overheard by the press because of an open locker room door.

He has been an ideal citizen off the field and has become a very outspoken advocate for those with mental illness. So far, throughout minicamp and OTAs he has come across as a great leader, terrific work ethic and has shown tremendous public support for his QB.

Marshall did not wear out his welcome in Chicago. He was a cap casualty. Simple as that.

Edit: Agree with your point, flgreen. The distraction of the TV show was seen as an issue in Chicago, but until he was traded, he was portrayed in the local press as a great teammate. Traded to the Jets and suddenly the Bears were getting rid of a distraction.

I do agree that Marshall will be one of the major positive additions to the Jets roster this off season. I also think he will be on "good behavior" while he is here, his future after football depends on it. I am glad he is a Jet.

With that said I'm not so sure he is getting a bad rap from the press, mental illness or not. If Marshall was doing his thing in today's environment in the NFL, I think he would be out of football. Kind of makes Ray Rice look like an alter boy.

Brandon Marshall's "rap sheet"

New Bears receiver is no stranger to trouble

March 14, 2012

20.3K
Newly acquired Bears receiver Brandon Marshall has a long list of off-field incidents and twice has been arrested for suspicion of domestic violence. Here is a timeline of those events.

Oct. 31, 2004: During his junior year at Central Florida, Marshall was arrested at a Denny’s restaurant in Orlando, Fla., on charges of assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct, trespass and resisting arrest without violence and refusal to obey. The charges were dismissed.

April 8, 2005: Marshall was charged with retail theft, a misdemeanor, after trying to return a stolen set of bed sheets, valued at $19.99, to a Burlington Coat Factory. The charge was dropped.

June 17, 2006: Marshall and longtime girlfriend Rasheedah Watley both filed police reports alleging physical abuse by the other in a long altercation at an Orlando apartment. No arrests or charges were made.

Jan. 1, 2007: Marshall was at the Denver nightclub Shelter with Broncos teammates Javon Walker and Darrent Williams, attending a birthday party for Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin. As the group left the club in a limousine, Williams was shot fatally in the neck by an unknown assailant. Walker later said the shooter was likely another man at the nightclub who was seeking retaliation after an altercation with Marshall's cousin that evening. Marshall testified at the trial of gunman Willie Clark that he helped escalate the dispute that led to Williams' death.

Jan. 24, 2007: According to the Denver Post, police interviewed Marshall and his father after an argument in an Orlando parking lot. Marshall claimed his father tried to hit him with his car. His father claimed Marshall had fired a gun. Both men declined to press charges.

March 18, 2007: In Atlanta, Watley told police Marshall punched her and took her purse while in a hotel. Marshall was gone before police arrived. No charges were filed.

March 21, 2007: According to the Denver Post, police in Palm Beach County, Fla., interviewed Marshall and Watley twice in the same night after two loud arguments. Both said the disturbances were not physical in nature. No arrests or charges were made.

March 26, 2007: Marshall was arrested in a Denver suburb on suspicion of domestic violence. Watley reported Marshall prevented a taxi she was in from leaving his house. Marshall completed anger management counseling and the charges were dropped two months later.

June 8, 2007: According to the Denver Post, two incident reports were filed by Atlanta police. A friend of Watley’s claimed Marshall hit her car and then threw a rock at the passenger door as Watley was riding in the passenger seat. Watley also told police Marshall cut her in the thigh and punched her in the face. She was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. Marshall was not present when police arrived. No charges were filed.

June 30, 2007: According to the Denver Post, Watley told Atlanta police Marshall punched and choked her at his condo. She had a bruise and scratches. Marshall was not present when police arrived. No charges were filed.

Oct. 22, 2007: Marshall was arrested in Denver and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. He was pulled over driving the wrong way on a one-way street hours after a game. He later pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of driving while ability-impaired and was sentenced to one year of probation and 24 hours of community service.

March 6, 2008: Marshall was arrested on charges of misdemeanor battery in Atlanta after a dispute with Watley. She told police he punched her in the mouth and eye. Marshall said he cut his hand on glass.

Aug. 6, 2008: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Marshall for three games for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. The suspension was reduced to one regular-season game and a fine of an additional game check, costing him $52,353.

March 1, 2009: Marshall was arrested in Atlanta on disorderly conduct charges after allegedly being involved in a dispute with then-fiancee, Michi Nogami-Campbell, now his wife. Charges were dropped the next day.

Aug. 14, 2009: Marshall was found not guilty on the battery charges from the March 2008 arrest in Atlanta.

April 23, 2011: Marshall was taken to Broward General Medical Center after Nogami-Campbell stabbed him in the abdomen at their Florida home. Nogami-Campbell told police she stabbed Marshall “out of self-defense.”

Sunday: Marshall is accused by a 24-year-old woman of punching her in the eye, leaving a black eye, in an altercation outside a club in New York. Marshall’s attorney says it was Marshall’s wife that was injured and says the couple are the true victims in the case.

The article you posted is from 2012. Almost all of the items relate to 2011 incidents and prior. He was diagnosed with BPD in 2011 and has been relatively incident free since as far as I know. He has admitted that he sometimes feels as if he is losing control but he can recognize the signs and control his temper/anger better than before. Jets will probably have to deal with minor issues, but nothing like the laundry list from the article above.

To me, fair and balanced reporting from a guy like Cimini would have included reference to his illness and the fact that he has controlled it much better for the last few years. I agree that without the diagnosis and treatment, he would have been suspended and out of football by now.

This is the Brandon Marshall that I have been reading about for the three years since he came to Chicago:

Brandon Marshall donates $50k to mental health program

WRITTEN BY PATRICK FINLEY POSTED: 02/11/2015, 06:28PM
Sign-up for Chicago Sun-Times newsletters.

Brandon Marshall donated $50,000 to Lurie Children's Hospital and its mental health awareness program.
An emotional Brandon Marshall spoke to 400 students at Tilden Career Community Academy on the South Side on Wednesday, encouraging them to focus on their mental health and to not be ashamed to seek help.

The Bears receiver met with the students after donating $50,000 through his Project 375 foundation to Lurie Children’s Hospital’s mental health awareness program. The program works with Chicago Public Schools to improve behavioral health support services.

Before speaking to the group, Marshall spent the morning meeting in small rooms with students who shared their stories. Marshall — diagnosed with borderline personality disorder in 2010 — shared his, too. He spoke of growing up in a Pittsburgh home with neither hot water nor a heater. His family, he said, had to use the oven to heat their home.

“You can find your purpose in your pain,” he said.

Project 375 — formerly the Brandon Marshall Foundation — focuses on developing awareness, donating money and trying to end the stigma associated with mental health issues.

Or this one:

New York Jets: Brandon Marshall - Changing Perceptions
by Kyalo Mulumba 2w ago

To quote the great Hall of Famer Steve Young, “In the NFL…perception is reality!”

When one thinks about the top wide receiving units in the NFL, teams like the Green Bay Packers, Atlanta Falcons, and Denver Broncos come to mind. Over the past few years, no one would put the Jets and “great receivers” in the same sentence. In one off-season, that entire perception has changed. With the acquisition of Brandon Marshall, the New York Jets wide receiving corps went from a weakness, to a strength…in a New York minute.

As an individual playmaker on the field, the specific skills that he brings are his size, strength, and ability to be “open….even when he’s covered”. He gives Geno Smith a steady reliable target that he can always rely on when adversity, in the form of a heavy pass rush, is bearing down on him. Basically, Marshall is a 6’5” security blanket.

His impact, however, is far more wide reaching and impactful on winning than simply making Geno look like Linus in the Great Pumpkin patch.

To use a basketball analogy, Marshall puts the other receivers in their proper position. They can now be comfortable, confident, and productive by simply doing what they are accustomed to doing.

Eric Decker is no longer the big time free agent acquisition expected to be the number one receiver. Now, he can settle into his role as the #2 receiver. This will not be a problem for Decker. He thrived in this role in Denver. Should he have a bad game or two in a row, he’ll face scrutiny… but it will not be as much as he would have faced if he was the Jets #1 receiver. Furthermore, his days of facing the #1 cornerback are now over.

Jeremy Kerley will not be the first person who Geno Smith and the offense relies upon to make plays down the field, should Decker struggle to get open, as was the case last season. Now, Kerley will return to his ideal role of slot receiver, third receiver, and be asked make plays on 3rd down against single coverage from the third corner on the opposing defense. With his decreased workload, Kerley may also be called upon to make plays in the kick return game which is another area that he is comfortable with.

Rookie WR Devin Smith will now be able to ease his way into the offense, without much in the way of expectations, as a second round receiver should. We all remember Stephen Hill, the last receiver the Jets took in the 2nd round. During his rookie season, he was expected to make an impact right away as the #2 receiver on the team. All Jets fans know how that turned out.

After two seasons he was released by the team. He’s now trying to salvage his career with Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers.

In addition to impacting the receiving corps, Marshall also brings toughness and an attitude to the entire franchise.

Marshall is not afraid to be a leader on the field, in the locker room, and in the public eye as an advocate for mental health awareness. The platform that he now has, playing for the Jets in a city like NY, should not be discounted in terms of the effect it can have on the franchise and how it is viewed.

This is especially true if the Jets are winning.

His off the field contributions in the community will not replace winning. Nevertheless, if they are winning, it will certainly enhance the winning vibes in the eyes of the community.

The only thing left for Marshall to do now is produce. He has shown throughout his career that he is very capable. Brandon Marshall’s production should be the least of concerns for Jets fans. Still and all, Jets Nation should be fired up, chomping at the bit…in a fever pitch waiting for the season to start.

Just by his presence, Marshall has already made a significant impact on the perception of the team.

He will be good for whoever plays QB. He is still better than Decker or anything else we have or have had for many, many years.

Like I said I'm glad he's on the team. He's had treatment before, and anger management classes. IMO his real problem is he drank to much, and gets mean when he drinks.

I'm good with him being here, and think he will control himself for he sake of his future. As long as he's not dating my sister.

I think Marshall be a HUGE positive both in skill and helping Geno develop.

Don't agree with Cimini's WR depth chart at all.

Posey and Graham?

I think Owusu is a virtual lock. And they may keep 7 overall with 2 of Enunwa, Evans and Powell, counting Owusu and Powell as ST players.

Agree that Owusu should make the roster. Don't know why, but I do think Posey has a good chance of making the roster. Macc seems to like him. Gave up a trade value of a 5th rounder for him according to the "trade value chart".

Be very surprised if the Jets carry 7 WR's. Rght now have 5 RB's , and 2 FB's on the team. Strongly suspect they are going to carry a lot of DB's. Only so many spots. Not only that but I think people are going to be surprised the kind of O Gailey is going to run. Think it is going to be more like the offense he ran back in Pittsburgh, Led the league in rushing attempts both years.

Actually there has been discussion of the offense that Gailey wants to run by the players and it is definitely a spread passing attack, likely with middle power run concepts. Some have described it as "wide open". It will not be like Pittsburgh's offense though it will be balanced. But we will be in four and five wide a lot.

There is no FB position in the offense, Gailey has stated that, so to make the team they have to beat out Amaro and the other TEs for the HB spot. Unlikely we have any FBs on the roster at all, and I doubt we keep 4 RBs. I think 7 WRs is quite possible because of the needs of STs and the offense we will run.

I think Posey is a flyer of a player Mac liked but I think it unlikely he sticks based on some of the admittedly limited OTA reports we got. I do think Rumph has a shot. Evans has flashed and many think Enunwa should have made the team last year after TC.

I think we are so strong at CB I do not think we carry a lot of extra, probably the standard 9 maybe 10 since Cro is likely a one year thing.

This is a good post, and I'm not going to attempt to nit-pick it for the sake of being contrary. :)

I think how the QB situation works out is going to determine what the O is going to look like. IMO they are going to attempt a power running game, switching in and out of the spread, hoping not to put to much stress on whoever the QB is going to be. Mostly trying to keep the QB in 3rd and shorts.

Gailey has always had a balanced running/passing attack. Attempting to maximize his QB's skills. Bowles is also a strong Parcells advocate. I'll be surprised if they run a wide open spread O. Bowles also likes to run what has been called a "Big nickle" where he takes a Lb'er off the field and brings a DB into the box.

He also plays more dime defense then any DC in the league. "In 2013, the Cardinals were a nickel team (five defensive backs), but this year, they play a lot more dime (six DBs). Last week against the St. Louis Rams, Arizona was in dime 71% of the time."

http://www.freep.com/story/sports/nfl/lions/2014/11/14/detroit-lions-film-review-cardinals/19022459/

Of course this is my opinion, but I think if they are going to carry extra players at any position it will be at CB. Like Rex before him, Bowles seems to love CB's

6 more days till some of these things start to play out. Can't wait

I hope they don't use a FB. Kind of a dead position in todays NFL.

Does anyone care about his history? I know I don't. What is the common theme in every one of these incidents?

Charges were not filed, Charges were dropped.

Near as I can tell, this guy has one OUI on his record. He also has not had one single f*ck up since 2011. Considering how many incidents are listed, 4 years is a long time to go without an infraction. It appears that since he got himself medicated that he is OK now.

Granted, if I had been looking at that rap sheet and Marshall was about to enter the draft, I would not want anything to do with him. But Marshall is a long term veteran now and he's always managed to come out of things smelling like a rose.

Although, I would keep a watchful eye on him, it appears we have picked up another Braylon Edwards.

It turns out that Brandon Marshall’s shots from afar toward the Chicago Bears haven’t fallen on deaf ears.

Matt Forte has heard Marshall’s criticisms of the team that dealt him, and quarterback Jay Cutler, this offseason, and dished them right back at the Jets wide receiver.

Marshall said recently that he felt he was the only one in the Bears organization with the “huevos” to hold Cutler accountable last year.

“Sometimes Brandon couldn’t hold himself accountable,” Forte said in response on the Rich Eisen Show.

MEHTA: TIME FOR BRANDON MARSHALL TO CUT CORD WITH BEARS

Asked what his reaction is to Marshall’s comments about Cutler, Forte said, “I hear a lot of animosity and a lot of bad feelings coming from that relationship.”

“He was in Denver with Jay, and then he switched teams and then he came here,” the Bears running back added. “And things didn’t work out, and when stuff doesn’t work out sometimes, feelings are let out like that.”

Since Marshall has arrived in New York, the outspoken receiver has preached chemistry as the key to success with his new team.

Marshall may be right that chemistry issues plagued the Bears last season, but many believe that he was a contributor to that problem in Chicago. And clearly, the Bears felt they were better off without him since they dealt him and a seventh-round pick to the Jets for a fifth-rounder.

And Marshall’s comments about the importance of chemistry sound somewhat hypocritical given the way he has spoken about his ex-teammate Cutler while in Chicago and since leaving. Asked last week if he thought current teammates might be concerned with the way he has been speaking about the Bears, the receiver danced around the question.

Forte also felt that Marshall’s weekly appearances on Showtime’s “Inside the NFL” also caused friction within the organization, though it personally did not bother the running back.

“I didn’t have an issue with it as long as he got back in time, was taking care of his body, and came to play every Sunday,” Forte said. “But I guess a lot of other people had issue with that and thought his mind wasn’t on football first. And whenever people start to question that, you have to answer that question.”

Forte said he wished that if then-Bears coach Marc Trestman had a problem with Marshall traveling to New York each week for the show, then the coach should have expressed that, which the running back did not believe happened.

Marshall is expected to continue to appear on the show this season, though he won’t have to fly each week now that he plays for the Jets.

“Tough call on that one but I don’t think Coach Trestman really held him accountable either on that, actually,” Forte said. “We had a lot of accountability issues going on last year."

Agreed. Marshall is the best receiver for Fitz. Big guy over the middle. My only concern is that Marshall was hoping that Geno was the man and now once Fitz struggles, he might start acting out. We shall see

Still agree that Marshall can really help this team, and who ever the QB is.

I'm very surprised that Marshall has remained silent on "jawgate" I hope he stays that way and focus' on football , and helping who ever his QB is.

I became a bit concerned about Marshall before this broke, in that he was refusing to take reps in practice from any one except Smith. He can be very polarizing, he shares a house with Smith. So far he hasn't had any input. It needs to stay that way

Jets receiver Brandon Marshall said last week he's done talking about the Chicago Bears and Jay Cutler, whom he had dumped on several times this summer for the simple reason that somebody had asked him about it.

But Matt Forte, one of Cutler's Bears teammates, still had a parting shot for Marshall, whose last word on the subject was to say he was the only one on the Bears to with the "huevos" to hold Cutler accountable.

"I don't think that was the case where everyone was held accountable [last year]. I don't see how he can say that," Forte, a Bears running back told "The Rich Eisen Show," via ESPN.com.

"Sometimes Brandon didn't hold himself accountable."

Wherever would anyone get that idea?

PLUS: What getting punched by a teammate says about Geno Smith
Cutler, too, was asked about Marshall's remarks, but he chose not to take the bait.

"Anytime you get traded or moved to a team, there's going to be some issues you are going to deal with or questions that are going to come up," Cutler said on ESPN 1000's "Waddle and Silvy Show."

"That's only natural. All I can say is he's got a lot of good friends on this team and we wish him the best of luck.

"At this point, we've got our own problems and things we are dealing with, and we're just trying to concentrate on camp and get everything going in the right direction we need it to go."

Hero by far! To bad he can't help and groom Geno but maybe he can with Petty. I'm sure he can and if it's Fitz and we all know it will be him, it always helps throwing the ball to a 6'4", 215 lb monster WR to help you on the field.
