'Fire Idzik' banner returns for Jets

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets haven't made a lot of big plays through the air, but they make headlines because of what has occurred in the air space.

For the second time in six weeks, the Jets practiced Wednesday as a plane circled the field carrying a banner that urged the firing of general manager John Idzik.

A disgruntled fan group, which has its own website, rented a plane that flew over practice during the media period. The banner read:

"Penalty Flag Day 12/21 FireJohnIdzik.com."

The group, which already has purchased billboard space near MetLife Stadium, is planning to distribute approximately 10,000 "Fire Idzik" flags at Sunday's final home game against the New England Patriots.

Flags already have been handed out at local bars.

Several players looked up during their special teams drills as the plane buzzed over the field in suburban New Jersey. Unlike the Nov. 5 flyover, Idzik and owner Woody Johnson weren't present.

Idzik, in his second year, has come under intense criticism for the Jets' 3-11 season. Coach Rex Ryan is expected to be fired, and there's growing speculation Idzik could be dismissed as well.

Johnson expressed his frustration with the season in a recent interview, but he has yet to reveal his plans.

He unwittingly fueled the firestorm by committing a mishap on Twitter. Johnson mistakenly favorited a tweet urging him to fire Idzik, prompting a mea culpa Tuesday night from the owner.


It was in response to this tweet: "@woodyjohnson4 you really need to #FireIdzik at this point. This roster is garbagio."

I'm going to the game Sunday and if I'm offered a "Fire Idzik" handkerchief, I won't take it. I don't think the abuse is fair. I'm not saying he's done a great job but I think it's becoming over the top.

@littlejohnflowers would agree with you. He actually made a good point last time around asking who was behind all of this and some speculated it was the media bc this movement grew rapidly. I've never seen anything like this before. This people were in all media outlets. They have a legit pr team lol.

We all agreed that this has been a bit extreme. John may have messed up by not getting us wide receivers, cb and banking on Geno to improve but he did not leave us in terribke position. I might be in the minority but the Jets are not that far out. We can get much better quickly. I'm always a bit optimistic but if you think about it, on our offense we are okay. Solid wide receivers, great run game. Just need another guard to replace colon.

Defense is where we need help but we can fix that with the money we have in place and maybe a new coach who won't leave his players with limited skills on an island.

it was on hard knocks when tanny asked rex if he wanted holmes so i am assuming that is the gm's job to ask rex if he wants such and such a player and then rex says yes or no.

Rex didn't want Hill and got him anyway..Holmes was a A$$hole but was also a Bowl MVP that used to give Rex fits when he was with the Ravens.. Rex also loved Revis and Cro how did that work out?? Rex haters make out he was running the draft and hiring FA's..LOL

Of course a HC is going to want a productive player. They want all the good players. It's not his job to figure out how the players contracts work out in the big picture. That's the GM's job

The Jets were in a different situation back in the Holmes contract days. They had just been to 2 AFC championship games. They believed in their heart they were a player or two from the Super Bowl. They gambled that Sanchez was going to take a step up.

kinda my point the gm suggests the players and rex agrees on the ones he wants..........so alot of these bad players we have rex had a hand in saying yes I want these players.

A gm just doesn't sign some players and say hey here is your roster without the coach knowing who the gm was going after.

The draft is a different animal because then your looking at even more hands in the cookie jar.

i believe idzik sat on money he could use on his "own guy" after rex is gone..

Well if Idzik did do what you are saying, it sure worked for him, Rex will be fired, right after he is. Unless of course The Jets beat NE Sunday, then, the plot thickens.......................................................................?

I agree with you! I think too many Jets fans want instant gratification. I also think IDZIK should be given the time honored tradition of being able to pick his own HC. This man signed the BEST: QB available; RB available; wide receiver available; best pass ruser available this past off season yet the INSTANT GRATIFICATION guys say he is cheap because he did not sign DRC to an overpriced contract like the Gi...ants did. I agree also coaching staff needs to go first that would be where I focused my energy is making sure everyone is gone with rex. The wr coach the QB coach defensive line coach db coach everyone except the waterboys.
