So far, it doesn't matter. Smith has been playing lights out. Up until today He and Fitz were both playing well. From what I'm reading today Smith had an outstanding day, and fitz was just OK.
Gaily and Bowles said from the beginning Geno was going to get all 1st team reps and Fitz would get all second team reps heading into camp.
Someone saying today there's no competition because Geno is getting all the first team reps is exactly what I said from jump...you're working with the second team and going against the second D with Fitz getting zero to few reps with 1s or against 1s...which means its not an apples to apple comparison...which means it could never be a competition.
What Gaily said the whole time was the truth...what Bowles said right after was the appropriate PR swing to clean up Gaily's quotes to not send jets fans in an uproar.
if Geno flops, they pull him. But people clamoring on this site and all over the web when Geno was handed to team 1 and Fitz getting zero to few shots against the same level of competion just said the Jets were giving Geno every chance to win the job.
It's Geno versus himself. Fitz is not in the picture until Geno falls on his face. If he doesn't, Fitz never drops the clipboard, if he does, Geno picks it up. This was always the plan.
Bowles has also repeatedly said Petty has a long way to go, Which I think has been evident in a few reports, including the big pick 6 day 1. But what is incredible encouraging is there has been two reports on him moving the secondary with his eyes, including moving the safeties to allow him to hit Amaro down the seem once. This is a skill he never used in college, or rarely, and something we need to see. This, his footwork, and his ability to absorb the playbook (his brain is his biggest skill set, so I doubt this will be a concern) is what we need to see.
I really look forward to seeing his growth as well.
I think it's a virtual lock geno starts..if he doesn't get cut in August :roflmao:...if he flops Fitz checks in and the Jets shift focus to developing Petty in hopes he can get some reps late in the season. If Geno flops, it would be nice to get Petty some reps like Mettenberger had last year for the Titans. But we need him to show some things in the preseason.
