How terrible, I can't imagine dying in a plane on the runway having never even taking off.

Wow. This is horrible news.

It's time to put an end to the flying of planes to carry messages, taunt teams, etc. It's just not worth the potential risk.

Don't really want to get into an argument over this, and I run the risk of being accused of being insensitive in light of this tragedy. But pilots who fly advertising banners know the risks. It doesn't make a lot of difference if the ad is for a casino or restaurant, or for a message some fans want to put out. I'll bet the pilots themselves would be outraged at any suggestion that this type of advertising be banned.

I know. And I understand that this was just an accident.

I just think the whole "flying banners" thing from one team to another is pretty dumb and petty, and it's a stupid way for someone to lose a life.

That said, I am not saying I want anything to be banned. I want fans to grow up and stop using planes to trash talk, or send messages to front offices.

As a libertarian, I think folks should more or less be able to do what they want to do. That includes not only the fans, but the pilots too. The pilot in this case could very well have died flying some other banner. In general, I think the banner movement among fans is pretty funny, but when an event like this occurs we are all shocked and saddened. Personally, I hope fans who want to send a message will continue doing this kind of thing. But I understand why you would not want any part of it. That's your right too.

Again, this isn't about the law. Should people have the legal right to do this? Sure. But rights come with responsibilities, and this is one of the dumbest wastes of resources imaginable.

When we have rights without responsibilities or common sense, then we're pretty much acting like a bunch of children.

Well personally, I don't think fans who sponsor banners are being childish. And I don't think this should stop because of a single tragedy. I'm sure the fans who sponsored that banner feel awful, and that's understandable. But I suspect this tragedy is a one in a million event, and others should not avoid sponsoring banners because of it, any more than someone should hesitate to take a commercial flight because of what happened to MH 370.

Oh, I'm sure they feel awful.

If people want to continue to fly banners to taunt opposing teams, fine. It's their right. But I don't care for the practice nearly as much as you do.

Right. I think it's clear at this point that I feel these banners are a harmless form of fun sponsored by certain fans that went tragically wrong in this particular case, while you think it is a sophomoric and reckless stunt. On that note, I think we may have reached a point where we can agree to disagree.

Pretty much how I feel. I agree with SE that the idea is dumb, and I probably wouldnt ever sink my money into it...unless it was a really good cheating idea for the pats...I may think about that scenario; but overall, a waste of time and money that accomplishes not much. However, I think if fans want to do it, they should be able to and this crash shouldn't prevent it, IMO.

The story is weird. The first article says the plane tried to hook the banner seven times and subsequently crashed. Then a followup article says it wasn't the hired pilot who crashed but another plane.

I'm utterly shocked that the internet is not 100% accurate with news reporting. I might need to take aspirin and lay down for a while now.

When a fan falls from an upper deck in a stadium, should we consider closing off all seats above the first bowl level?
Life carries risk, it is a part of what makes life exciting.
Tragedy happens, no matter how safe we try to be. We grieve, we move on, and we continue to live life as before.
We are hard-wired to do so, it's a survival trait.
