Cam Newton in rare training camp fight involving quarterback

Training camp fights are generally overblown, and seldom worth noting.

But when the quarterback ends up at the bottom of the pile, it’s different.

Via Bill Voth of Black and Blue Review, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and cornerback Josh Norman had to be separated, after the two fought and ended up on the ground.

Norman, one of the most talkative Panthers, picked off Newton during a team drill, and during the ensuing chase, they ended up on the ground. As the players were being broken up, video showed Newton yelling to Norman: “Hit me like that again and you’ll know something.”

Newton was then heard insisting “I’m good, I’m good,” as teammates dragged him back away from the incident.

Norman’s a competitive kid, and angling for a new contract. But if he hurts the $100 million franchise quarterback doing something silly in practice, he might have to get it someplace else.

Sean McDermott says regrettable thing about Cam Newton fight

Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott has exhibited intelligence during his career as an NFL assistant.

But in response to today’s fight between Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and cornerback Josh Norman, McDermott said one of those things that make people think football coaches are all meatheads.

“We’d rather have that than guys out here just going through the motions, playing patty cake,” McDermott said, via Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer.

Sure, if you think your quarterback possibly being injured while rolling around with a teammate is a good idea.

The whole thing started when Norman picked off Newton in a team drill, then stiff-armed his own quarterback who was giving chase. Things quickly went south, with the two shoving and ending up in a pile.

McDermott went onto say that he talked to Newton on the practice field afterward, encouraging him to keep throwing at Norman, using that trusty coach cliche “iron sharpens iron.”

Not to pick on McDermott too much, but that’s just a big ol’ pile of stupid.

The Panthers just gave Newton a $100 million contract. To play quarterback. You know, the most important position on the field.

Anyone who thinks any incident which ends up with a $100 million quarterback (or any quarterback) on the ground and needing to be separated from a teammate is reacting emotionally, rather than rationally.

Grrrr, testosterone, fight, good.

Fortunately, Panthers coach Ron Rivera took the more sane view, suggesting that while emotion and competition is nice, it has to be handled the appropriate way by both sides.

And he pointed out that having Jim McMahon as a teammate, that he had previously seen a quarterback involved in a similar scuffle.

But McMahon wasn’t nearly so central to his team’s chances of winning, either.

I think I can see his point, as long as what he really meant was "we would rather see mistakes that arise from caring about playing well and being passionate, than mistakes that arise from not caring enough, or not trying hard enough." Obviously, though, you don't want to see your QB in any kind of physical altercation, especially one instigated by a player on his own team! But people who didn't care wouldn't fight.

Professionals don't fight for any reason.

Normally I'd agree with you Johnny. If it's a NT and OL. Sure have at it. Good for the spirit of the team.

Not so sure ya want your $100,000,000 QB punching some one in the helmet and shattering his hand.

You have to be smarter than that. If it was AJ Green or Adrian Peterson I would say it's stupid. Certain players once invested in can't threaten the team's season by doing stuff like this. I wouldn't want Mangold, Suh, Clay Matthews, Haden, or Revis in a situation like that...

As a professional franchise player, you have to know these incidents can't be part of the "brand" you've created to get you the franchise contract... Suh can't be fighting and kicking players, Revis shouldn't be getting in fights with Geno, etc. You pull them into the corner in the locker room and say what needs to be said and be done with it. At least I think that's what Revis would do in this situation.

While I feel it was pretty stupid for Cam to get into a fight, I have to say that Josh Norman had it coming. The guy is constantly running his mouth and agitating every player on the team. When Norman was drafted and first interviewed, he was asked what player @ CB his game resembles, and he said Revis. Then he said he will be better than Revis.
Cam Newton's popularity with his defense has increased since the fight.
