Jets release first depth chart

Some observations based on what I've been reading and hearing about camp:

1. I'm not surprised, but really disappointed that Amaro has not asserted himself and has fallen to third string.

2. I'm surprised Posey is listed ahead of Enunwa.

3. I'm not the least bit surprised that Aboushi is buried on the OG chart, this staff is clearly unimpressed and I said as much in my recent roster projections where I had Winters and Dozier making the team, but not Aboushi. Some coaches like maulers inside at OG to play smash-mouth football, not slimmer athletic technicians. Sometimes its just a matter of preference and scheme. Whatever the reason is here, it looks like Aboushi is in serious danger of being cut unless he really does something to change the coaches minds.

4. I'm not totally shocked that Bowen is listed ahead of Douzable, frankly Bowen has had a much stronger pro career, but based on the reports I've been reading in camp, Bowen has been pretty silent while Douzable seems to be getting more action, so I assumed Douzable was ahead of Bowen and reflected that in my most recent roster projections. My first roster projections in early July actually had Bowen making the team and not Douzable, which may have raised some eyebrows, but again, from what I had been reading I was getting the impression that this battle was flipped. Apparently not.

5. I'm very surprised Babin is listed ahead of IK. For all of his fanfare last year, Babin had a grand total of 2 SACKS, and by all accounts he's had a quiet camp to boot, while IK is making a lot of noise and making a favorable impression according to various sources, including Mike Westhoff. IMO Babin is over the hill and this particular ranking surprises me.

6. Disappointed to see Pace ahead of Mauldin & Reilly, but not surprised. Coaches like veterans if they still have something left in the tank. That said, I think this one can change if Mauldin and Reilly continue to have strong camps, the same is true of #5 , I fully expect Babin to be leaped by all of these youngsters and I don't see him surviving the final cuts.

Would t be surprised if Ridley doesn't make the team. hakim and Powell both getting cut would surprise me since they are both special teams studs. Have to think 1 makes it. Not sure posey makes it.

Yes, some of this could just be to put guys on alert not to slack off. also. If Colon and especially Winters are playing like they did last year, then the coaching staff deserves to be ripped. Maybe they are better fits for the scheme, so I'll wait and see. But Aboushi clearly outplayed them last year.

Read an article recently that focused on James Carpenter. He said that he loves Gailey's blocking scheme in that it is 1 V 1 power blocking, and not zone based. The scheme fits his skillset and mentality. Perhaps the same can be said for Winters and Colon, not to mention some of the other youngsters on the roster like Dozier and Harrison.
I also agree that Bowles has put some folks on notice, as well as the entire team in general yesterday. I like that we have a HC who doesn't tolerate half-assed effort. I think what is going on with Amaro is that Bowles won't allow him to sit on his lofty draft position, and is using his inner Parcells to get the best out of him.

Let's hope so.

Carpenter looking awesome is great news (and what I've read also).

Meanwhile, Seattle is struggling to replace him.

Jets' blocking scheme is 'a dream come true'
http://espn.go.com/b...dream-come-true

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Nick Mangold has played with only two right guards in his nine-year career with the New York Jets -- Brandon Moore and Willie Colon. Left guard, different story.
On Monday, Mangold was asked to name his left guards, and he rattled off his list: Pete Kendall, Adrien Clarke, Alan Faneca, Matt Slauson, Vladimir Ducasse,Brian Winters and Oday Aboushi.
Mangold's recall is impressive. He missed Will Montgomery, who started two games in 2007, but we'll cut him some slack. The point is, Mangold and left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson -- both offensive-line mainstays since 2006 -- have been dealing with a parade of left guards. Only two of them, Kendall and Faneca, were accomplished players in the league.
Maybe now they can find stability with James Carpenter, who started on two consecutive NFC championship teams with the Seattle Seahawks.
Carpenter, who signed a four-year, $19 million contract in free agency, has taken virtually every first-team rep at left guard in training camp. There's no competition, no guessing the opening-day starter. He's the guy, and he's excited about the Jets' blocking scheme.
"This offense is like a dream to me -- man and power blocking," said Carpenter, who played in a zone-blocking scheme in Seattle. "It's a dream come true for me. That's the type of lineman I am."
At 6-foot-5, 321 pounds, Carpenter is built for a power, road-grading scheme. In a zone system, the linemen blocks areas, not defenders. It's a finesse scheme.
The Jets could use some consistency at the position. That would make life easier for Mangold and Ferguson; they won't have to worry about hand-holding an inexperienced player at guard. They've been dealing with upheaval for most of their careers.
"I don't have anything else to compare it to, so it's what you have to deal with," Mangold said. "But it does take work to make sure you're on the same page, trying to get the (new) guy going -- or, in the case when Faneca came in, trying to learn from him."
Mangold said Carpenter is a man of few words, but he likes his mentality. In the spring, he asked Mangold about a particular pass-protection scheme. Mangold said not to sweat it, they'd work it out when they got in pads.
"Yeah, I just want to hit somebody," Carpenter told him.
Mangold liked that response.
Carpenter is the strong, silent type, all right. Maybe he can be strong enough to stop the revolving door.

He is a starting caliber OG...im disappointed also he may be released. he may be a Giant, but wouldnt be shocked if the Jags (idzik), Miami, Bills, Redskins, or Pats grab him either...

BTW, still cant believe the Cowboys stole Collins OG LSU...what an addition...or I would have included them as well.

Agree that Collins would've been a perfect fit for Gailey's offense and a future replacement for either RT or LT. You gotta wonder a bit about the Oday situation, is it poor scheme fit, attitude, didn't put in the offseason effort or what. Whatever it is, hopefully Bowles will trot out his best players come Browns game.

Pretty sure Bowles will do the right thing on every position

True competition with the winner on the field to start the season. None of the WRECKS favoritism for former good ol boys and/ or guys he drafted

I trust Bowles and whoever he trots out there. At least until week 1.

If you just look at the reps that Aboushi is, or isn't getting, he looks in real danger of not being on the rouster. Harrison is getting more reps with the 2's then Aboushi is. And has had some positive comments from the scribes.

It's getting to the time in camp that they are done playing motivation games, and starting to work on the continuity
of the OL.

The depth chart seems to accurately represent the way the reps are going recently. This could change of course, but right now Aboushi looks to be on his way out. We'll see

If true, definitely a surprise cut.

How are McDougle and Milliner ahead of Marcus Williams? Is because of where they were drafted? That was the old regime.

Not so much to me. In 2013 Aboushi was horrible as a RT, they moved him to guard. He replaced a horrible Winters, and seemed to play better then Winters was. Not good, but better.

Was Winters already injured? IDK. Some things have happened since then. 1) The Jets brought in Carpenter, from all reports he is playing well. One roster spot. Qvale has clearly caught someone's eye. When Colon was hurt Qvale was repping a lot with the 1's and 2's. He is actually a RT, and has the perfect body for it. Just my opinion, but I have a feeling they would like to use Qvale as the swing G/RT this year, with a long term view of him at RT next year. Two roster spots. They drafted Harrison. Kid has a tremendous up side, and I have heard his name with the 2's in several tweets. Seems to be doing well. Three roster spots.

The only surprise is that Aboushi is rated lower then Winters. Who as I said was bad last year. Winters was in the mix with the 1's in OTA's and mini camp when Colon wasn't practicing. Aboushi's name wasn't mentioned. This is a what have you done for me lately league. Bowles doesn't care what happened last year.

Won't be surprised if Aboushi is gone in Sept. Like I said a lot can happen between now and then

Yeah, I read somewhere that Amaro, being considered an H back, factors in to this latest depth chart...

Yeah, of course it does. For one thing he's learning a new position. What baffles me a bit when reading the tweets, I seldom hear his name mentioned with the 1's it's almost always with the 3's , or on the second field with the bubble players.

Even with the new position, when they put the H-back formation out there, shouldn't he be with the 1's. If they are going to use the H-back, they are going to have to practice the formation with the 1's, no?

We'll get a better idea what is going on on Thursday. I'm going to pay attention to how many reps he gets with Smith.
