Geno allegedly was taunting IK. If that is true then he is an idiot and deserved to get smacked.

I vehemently disagree with this. Physical violence is not an acceptable response to verbal taunting, no matter how much it is a natural response, especially not in a professional setting. Maybe if they were on the mean streets or something, but they were in the locker room of an NFL team for cryin' out loud. We have to be better than that. There may be situations where violence is justified, but nothing will EVER convince me that this was one of them.

If everything that has been said about Geno's behavior is true, I wouldn't defend that. But I'm surprised how many people are defending IK. What he did was clearly, unequivocally wrong. It can be rationalized, but so can any act of violence. It doesn't make it right.

I know Marshall said something in defense of Smith.

What other members of the offense have defended Smith?

I haven't been following every word of this saga.

Marshall, Decker, and Giacomini have all disputed media reports that the team hates Geno Smith.

Statements like "He's still our guy" sure don't sound like he's lost the locker room.

It doesn't even matter what anyone says, because people will just read their minds to find out that, oops, they didn't actually mean what they said! It's easy to discern people's true intentions when you have ESP!

I don't think there's that many people "defending IK", but rather feel (like me) that Geno needs to make better decisions if he truly wants to be a leader on this team. Whether he deserved to get punched or not is irrelevant to the fact that he keeps adding to the list of questionable actions/circumstances that seem to follow him everywhere.

For every post that defends why something wasn't his fault (on AND off the field), when will I EVER get to read one that promotes what he's doing to actually HELP the team?

Maybe people aren't saying "IK was right." But there have been plenty of instances of people on this thread basically saying that violence was justified based on the situation, that violence should have been expected, and that, if they were in the same situation, they would also have become violent. That is essentially the same as defending IK, IMO. That's alarming to me. I don't believe in violence over petty matters, which this clearly was.

What's Geno doing to help? Nothing. I think he completely stinks and I never wanted to see him take another snap for the Jets after last year's dismal performance. I wouldn't expect you to know this, but I have said it a few times, and I think if you read my comment history, you'll find that I'm not generally a Geno supporter at all. But I don't think he deserves the criticism he is receiving for having been punched in the face. I just don't.

Here is why I think Geno is the idiot in this situation. No "real" starting QB has ever been punched in the face. Geno allegedly was taunting IK. If that is true then he is an idiot and deserved to get smacked. Not sure he deserved to have his jaw broken, but when you get punched thats always a chance. I personally defended Geno for all his other "idiotic" mishaps, but connect all the dots and you have an immature QB that can't lead grown men. He might have all the talent in the world, but doesn't have the thick skin a QB needs. A few things that would have been nice to hear or read. He probably can't speak well, but he could have issued an apology in writing to his teammates and fans for his role. He then could have paid IK and made a nice donation. There was a small window that has closed now. His reputation and character is severely damaged with me and many other fans. No amount of arm talent can make up for the character flaws of Geno Smith.

Clint Longley Once Sucker-Punched Cowboys Star Roger Staubach In Practice

One could argue IK Enemkpali made the New York Jets better Tuesday when he punched Geno Smith in the team’s locker room, breaking the quarterback’s jaw and sidelining him for six to 10 weeks.

The same can’t be said for Clint Longley.

Longley began his NFL career as a backup to Dallas Cowboys star quarterback Roger Staubach. Longley then gained fame as a rookie in 1975, when he replaced an injured Staubach to lead the Cowboys to a comeback win over the Washington Redskins on Thanksgiving Day.

Yet Longley — who earned the nickname “The Mad Bomber” — also had a bit of a temper, which flared the following year when he and Staubach got into it during training camp. According to the Dallas Morning News, the dispute between the quarterbacks began when Staubach took exception to Longley insulting wide receiver Drew Pearson.

The two went back and forth until Longley upped the ante, surprising Staubach with what his teammates called a “sucker punch.” Longley and the future Hall of Famer immediately started scuffling after the blow, which gave Staubach a nasty gash over his eye that required stitches.

“They put me in charge of distracting (assistant coach) Dan Reeves so he wouldn’t break up the fight,” former teammate Danny White recalled to the Morning News. “I started trying to make stuff up to talk to him about, and then we looked back up the hill and Roger was just whaling on Clint.”

Fortunately, Staubach’s injury wasn’t too severe and he didn’t miss any regular-season action. But the ugly incident serves as a reminder that as much as the game has evolved over the years, a few aspects always will stay the same.

I was 5, but I vaguely remember that. Hopefully you aren't comparing Staubach to Geno which I knew you weren't. Bottom line for me is Geno asked to get punched. Geno is a bad seed and will probably never change. I don't care if he does or not. I've moved on. Finding a better replacement won't be hard.

Thanks for doing my research or just being old. I forgot about an incident 40 years ago. I guarantee Staubach didn't owe Longley money.

I think this is a great point. Admittedly, I do not know exactly what happened in the locker room, but from what I have read, a team leader would have paid back the $$ he owed a teammate and made a donation to the charity and cemented his spot as a leader and gained respect in the room. That said, IK should not have slugged Geno -- if he truly sucker punched the guy -- Geno is a victim. His behavior may have contributed to the situation, but he did not deserve what he got. Just a bad situation all around.

A bad situation that he could have and should have avoided if he was mature but he is not. He is a distraction and still making bad decisions - throwing ball when told not to engage in activities by team - and the tepid response from his teammates speaks volumes to me. read the NY Daily News article in today's paper by Gary Meyer's (jets.com, news) - who I think is a flaming AH - but he makes some very valid points about Smith along with the usual hyperbole.

Take a paper seriously that employs Mehta? Fat chance.

Geno Smith Out 6-10 Weeks

Based on Bowles' comments on the FAN today, it sounds like he wants Geno to come back and be the starter. He sounds pretty high on Geno's progress.

I'm sure the interview is on WFAN.com if anyone cares to listen.

so smith two weeks running of training camp didn't pay IK the $600 & we know this how?? media accounts.. we also have heard nothing about smith in that same time period doing anything to make things right for IK's charity event.. but in your mind that's OK because smith is involved in his own charity work?? so what are you saying, if smith name is not attached to the event he shouldn't have to make things right for missing IK's event & disappointing a bunch a kids waiting to meet an NFL QB?? but folks like me are mean spirited idiots?? LOLz amazing!!

oh BTW, aside from the players bolwes hand pick to speak to "the media" what other jets have publicly (& i don't count his new BFF) back smith?? i misspoke, i remember specifically at least bowles & revis were critical of how smith handled things!! & what former NFL players have backed smith..

i heard some be very vocal about how poorly smith handled things though.. i guess they're meanie doo doo heads too..

Hmm, so besides thinking that you know things that you couldn't possibly know and distorting what has been said by other players, you also seem to have a reading comprehension problem, since you attribute things to me that are quite far from what I wrote. Why don't you just put me on ignore, I have no interest in pursuing any discussion with you.

I wouldn't go that far, but he absolutely is not writing Geno off for the year, as some in the media are suggesting. He reiterated that Geno was clearly ahead in the QB competition, if you want to call it that
