I wasn't knocked over by any real improvement in the O-line. If they don't get better, it doesn't matter who will be at QB. The greatest QB in history never completed a pass from a prone position. And, about conservative play calling, they threw short passes because he wouldn't have had time to run deep patterns.

Good post.

Something to keep in perspective is the kid didn't complete single pass for more than 8 yards. It was a very guarded, conservative play call. Even orlovsky was allowed to open up and hit Salas for that 20 yard TD catch in the corner of the end zone, but even with Petty not falling on his face, it was an ultra conservative game plan he was asked to execute. Hopefully they can begin opening up the playbook for him a little as the preseason progresses.

Both the QBs didn't air the ball out much. I think that will be Gailey's game plan going forward. He likes the qb to get rid of the ball quickly. Fast strikes.

I never have, and still don't, buy this "it's only preseason..." crap. I understand that these games do not mean anything. I understand that their purpose is to evaluate new talent and get players reps under fire. But anytime an athlete takes the field in a game, there is a built in mechanism that drives them to be better than the guy across the trench. A player may do only as much as he needs to to win the guy across from him, but he almost HAS to do at least that much. Its called drive and you either have it or you dont.

This was the least competitive game played across the NFL tonight. That's a fact. And that was a fact throughout the WHOLE game, not just at isolated times. We got our ass handed to us from the starters to the practice squad players.

Tackling was abhorrent (that sound familiar to anyone?) Effort was, with few exceptions, poor (again, sound familiar to anyone?). D started slowly - again. Oline did look noticeably improved, and I thought Ivory's vision looked much better than it has in the past. I thought Marcus Williams was a bright spot, Mauldin too, but they were maybe the only ones. Fitz looked ok considering......and I thought Brice Petty looked pretty decent for his first big boy outing.....once the butterflies settled down. But neither of these guys is likely to lead us to the promised land.

Overall, I saw precious little to get excited about......but it IS early.

Have to agree with everything you say. I watched most of the Pats/GB game as well as Dallas/SD and there was a big difference in all the teams involved compared to the Sloppy lethargic mess that the Jets put on the field. Obviously all those other teams I watched are playoff caliber teams that have been in the same system for years while we're seeing the growing pains of a whole new system and coaching staff. Guess we just have to be patient and build off the few good things beginning with supporting Fitz as he makes this team his own as well as his key mentoring of Petty for the future...

Disagree. Carpenter at LG looked awesome, IMO. They ran behind him a lot last night on the first drive, especially on the 4th and 1 play Ivory ran up the guy for 4 or 5.

I think the oline looked better...

I didn't watch the game. Unfortunately, work has taken me far away from home and it'd hard for me to see a preseason game anyway.

But my question to everyone is the following, and for me this is all that really matters in the end:

Is this compliment of players capable of hitting on all cylinders? What I mean by that is can the defense play a great game at the same time the offense plays a great game at the same time that special teams plays a great game?

If the Jets can do that each and every week, they would probably win just about all of their games. However, I have not seen that happen with the NY Jets since probably the New Orleans game in 2013.

The o line looked very good in my opinion. They had great push on each of Ivory's runs. If we can add Mathis on the right side, we can definitely have one of the better units out there. Only problem we have is depth, if anyone goes down, we are screwed.

Its not often I can say this about a Preseason Game:

But I did not see one positive in this game that I can cite.

That was an effort and performance of Kotitian proportions.

If you really push me I'll say Mauldin and Reilly flashed as pass rushers, even if Mauldin needs to bring the QB down when he gets there and avoid sack/hurry nullifying penalties, and Bilal Powell flashed some hops, but really this is reaching for positives, mostly it was a clunker of Kotitian propositions; offense, defense, special teams and coaching (no team should ever look that unprepared and lethargic for a football game, even a preseason game, and thats on the coach).

Oh and we don't have a QB, so unless we make a trade, its gonna be a long year.

You can't hide your QB in this league, unless you have the 85 Bears defense, and even then you can't hide him.

starting offensive line was good. ivory ran well. they moved the ball down the field and if not for a cumberland drop, would have had a 1st down in the red zone.

you keep harping on the QB, but there really was little to judge fitz on. he completed a pass to marshall, completed a pass to decker, and had a pass to cumberland that should have been caught. that's the totality of his night.

and based on that, you had concluded we have no QB. a drive that we moved the chains, got a number of 1st downs, the o-line controlled the line of scrimmage, got points on, and if not for a drop, should have had a 1st down in the red zone.

Watched first two series and our D looked out of sync and Cro still sucks at tackling. They will figure it out. Cumberland should have caught the pass but the guy either tipped it barely or blocked him from seeing it for a split second. Carpenter looks like a huge upgrade for us. I would like to sign Mathis to replace Colon. He is fat and slow. Don't care about the rest of the game.

I always hate the statement it doesnt matter because everything was vanilla, we are just evaluating players, the game is "meaningless"...guess what the other team was doing? Vanilla, no game planning, and evaluating players.

The difference? They did it better, in every phase. They kicked the shit out of us and we stood there and took it and didnt have the talent to do anything about it.

There are two things you want to come out of preseason with -

No injuries, and an organized team.

The Jets yesterday -

Had penalties after timeouts
Shanked a punt
couldnt get off the field on 3rd down
fumbled handoffs
Couldnt convert 3rd downs
Had stupid roughing the passer calls extending drives
and got pushed up and down the field vs the run and pass
Had 125 yards of total offense versus vanilla defense

i.e. - we looked like Rex Ryan was still coaching us.

The end results means nothing. But not looking like a professional football team does...

I am racking this one up to a very emotionally charged and draining week before a road trip. I expct a long, hard week of practice with Bowles, a lot of players ashamed of themselves after watching the game film, and a better effort next week.

I also think any thoughts of a free agent spending spree leading to a quick fix is out the window. I now feel it will take 2-3 sesaon to get the stink of Rex off the roster and filled with Bowles/Mac type players. Everything around the Jets last week smelled like Rex.

DETROIT — The Jets were all sorts of bad in their 23-3 loss to the Lions Thursday night in—all together now—a preseason opener.

The starting defense played two series and gave up a touchdown and a field goal. The first-team offense played just one series with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick; they managed a field goal for their only points before Fitzpatrick handed the keys to rookie Bryce Petty the rest of the way. All told, the Jets were outgained, 428 yards to 123, and they managed just six first downs to the Lions' 26.

"I'm not concerned," Bowles said. "It's the first preseason game. We've got a lot of tackling to do. If the first group had played all game on both sides of the ball and we got killed like that, I'd be a little more concerned. If this was the third preseason game, we'd be a little bit concerned. But we've got a lot of work to do."

Let's break down who played well and who didn't.

STUDS

RB Chris Ivory: Ivory pounded out 25 yards on six carries during the first-team offense's opening drive, and he ran with the controlled fury that defines his approach, which seems to savor drawing contact. It's obvious Ivory's still got it. Wisely, Bowles didn't leave Ivory in beyond that.

DE Sheldon Richardson: Richardson only played a few series with the backups, but he made his presence felt in short order by absolutely pummeling one of the Lions' backup offensive lineman. If anything, Richardson showed what the Jets will be missing once he's forced to serve his suspension for the first four weeks of the regular season.

CB Marcus Williams: Battling for a roster spot, Williams was credited with four tackles, two passes defensed, and an interception. At camp earlier in the week, Williams got reps as the backup nickel. There are still more than two weeks until roster cuts, but Williams making it difficult for the coaches to ignore him.

DUDS

ILB Demario Davis: Davis got juked out of his shoes by Ameer Abdullah, the Lions' shifty rookie running back. But Davis was also beaten badly on a catch by Lance Moore, and on Golden Tate's 35-yard touchdown catch, Davis and safety Marcus Gilchrist had what Bowles described some kind of miscommunication that allowed Tate to both catch the ball and to scurry into the end zone.

S Marcus Gilchrist: Gilchrist had that aforementioned mix-up with Davis on the Tate touchdown, but he also got whistled for illegal hands to the face during Abdullah's sensational 45-yard run.

WR Walter Powell: In the third quarter, Powell attempted to let a punt bounce into the end zone. But as he engaged with a Lions player who had raced downfield, he put himself in position to have the ball knocked right to him as the Lions tried to prevent the punt from reaching the end zone. Powell had no choice but to catch the ball, at which point he was trapped inside the 5-yard line, where the Jets took over.

Agreed. I was actually somewhat impressed by Petty. For a guy that played in a "gimmick" offense, he played well. They really didn't allow him to throw the ball downfield, which is his strength. I believe in the beginning of the 4th, they ran that bootleg/screen pass for the 25th time, he actually tried to go downfield, but had to dump it off.

Really need to put Petty in perspective. Geno's first preseason drive---um yeah ran out of the endzone.

btw - on the long abdullah run, while gilchrist may have been guilty of hands to the face, he was also definitely held on the play. i saw his jersey being tugged as he tried to make a play on the runner.

Absolutely not. If the kid doesn't look like Tom Brady within the first five minutes he must be relegated to the practice squad! :)
We should go out and hire a guy off the street that no one else wants and give him the number 2 QB position with no questions asked. He will then learn the offense within 6-8 weeks and we will release him in 4. Carry on.:scratching-head-smi

Looks like McDougle was ahead. I think Williams moved up a bit after yesterday's performance.
