One of the scribes said today that it's not 8 games, but 8 weeks. If they IR him tomorrow, that's when the 8 weeks start. I don't know that for a fact, but that's what the guy said

I am pretty sure the 8 weeks begins at the start of the regular season. He would be eligible to return week 9 which is game 8 for us -- 11/8 against Jax.

Yup - here is the rule (from a 2014 article on NJ.com)

During each season a club will be permitted to return one player from the Reserve/Injured List to its 53-player Active/Inactive List. Such player must have suffered a major football-related injury (defined as an injury that renders the player physically unable to practice or play football for a period of at least six weeks [42 calendar days] from the date that the injury occurred) after reporting to training camp and must have been placed on Reserve/Injured after 4:00 p.m., New York time, on the Tuesday after the final roster reduction. A player who is eligible to return must be noted as "Designated for Return" at the time the player is placed on Reserve.

Player cannot be placed on short term IR until after final cuts, so clock starts running just before start of regular season.

Jets likely won't place Geno Smith on short-term IR

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. —
New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan says while it's possible, he does not expect quarterback Geno Smith to be placed on the short-term injured reserve list.

Smith is sidelined for six to 10 weeks with a broken jaw after being punched by then-teammate Ikemefuna Enemkpali last Tuesday. Smith had surgery last Thursday to have screws and metal plates inserted into his jaw.

Maccagnan says Tuesday that Smith is likely to miss the first four games of the regular season. By putting Smith on short-term IR, he wouldn't be able to play until he was on the list for eight weeks.

With Ryan Fitzpatrick the starter and rookies Bryce Petty and Jake Heaps behind him, the Jets are exploring veteran options but nothing is imminent.

as good as we could get off the scrap heap.

will make final roster decisions very interesting. assuming geno doesn't go on the IR-designated to return list, they likely will have to carry 4 QBs on the 53, 2 of which won't be active on game days. makes those last roster spots and battles more interesting

And causes the Jets to cut a talented player to get to 53. A player who would have added depth and probably played on special teams. Geno Smith's lack of leadership has affected his team in multiple negative ways.

I think it's not just filling in for Geno until he comes back. It's also insurance in case Fitz gets injured. Flynn would be the only thing standing between Petty and Nick Mangold's butt in that case.

Wait...that didn't come out right...

Excellent signing. Flynn has seen it all and Bryce is just not ready at this point to assume the back up role this early in his career, it will only prompt fans to turn on him when he begins to make rookie mistakes.

Flynn is a quality back up QB. Hell, if patterns are a reality, he's normally the back up to the eventual franchise QB:

Packers: Aaron Rodgers
Seahawks: Russell Wilson
Oakland: Derek Carr

Jets: ??????

Jets are going to sign former Packers', Raiders', Seahawks', Patriots' QB Matt Flynn to a one-year contract, source tells ESPN.

Pure Garbage, that will make you appreciate your own drafted Qb's. If Matt Flynn is needed at Qb for your team, than most likely your team isn't winning anyway. ( so signing immaterial as you hope that your team never has to count on him.)

Flynn wasn't the backup to Derek Carr- long gone by than. Matt Schaub was Derek Carr backup.

I completely understand this perspective from a Raiders fan. It makes sense. He couldn't win the job in Oakland. But looking at the QB landscape right now, the Jets didn't have many options. And at least Flynn has shown some ability to play well under the right circumstances. Maybe those circumstances could be ideal in NY under Gailey, if need be.

With that said, I'd rather not find out. Hopefully Fitzpatrick plays well enough this year.

Jets preparing to break in new quarterback at practice
5h
Rich Cimini, ESPN Staff Writer

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Wednesday morning's wake-up call, Day 21 of New York Jets training camp:

What's happening: It's the usual schedule. The players will be on the field for stretching at 1:50, followed by a special teams period. The full practice begins at 2:20. Sorry, folks, the session is only open to season-ticket holders.

What's hot: There could be a new quarterback on the field -- assuming Matt Flynn finalizes his contract. Late Tuesday, the Jets and Flynn were expecting to wrap up a one-year contract, as ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported. The Jets apparently are satisfied that Flynn's hamstring injury, reportedly the reason he was cut Aug. 10 by the New England Patriots, is fine. They gave him a physical exam last Friday. Obviously, Flynn will be in serious catch-up mode. ... The Jets will have to release a player to make room for Flynn. ... This will be a final practice before they face the Atlanta Falcons on Friday night at MetLife Stadium. On Tuesday, they prepared for the Falcons by running "cards," as they say in the business -- meaning the scout team ran Atlanta's plays off flash cards. Look for more of the same on Wednesday. ... Presumably, Muhammad Wilkerson (hamstring) will sit out again, meaning he won't play against the Falcons. At this point, it would be smart to let him rest, trying to get him on the practice field next week so he can play against the New York Giants.
