The second round curse

Jace Amaro's unfortunate shoulder injury, which landed him on season-ending injured reserve, got me thinking about the New York Jets' dark history of second-round picks. This isn't to suggest that Amaro is ready for the scrap heap -- this is only his second season -- but you can't help but notice the 40-year trendTwo of the greatest players in Jets history were second-round picks -- wide receiver Wesley Walker (1977) and defensive end Mark Gastineau (1979). In fact, Gastineau is the most recent second-rounder to make the Pro Bowl. Justin Miller (2005) made it once as a kick returner, but he was the quintessential flash-in-the-pan player, as his career lasted only 46 games. From Gastineau to the current second-rounder, Devin Smith, the Jets have used 32 picks in the second round and not one has made the Pro Bowl at an offensive or defensive position.
Call it bad drafting, call it rotten luck, call it whatever. It's just mind boggling.

This might be painful, but here's a review of the good, bad and ugly -- mostly, the latter two :

THE BUSTS
Stephen Hill (2012), Vladimir Ducasse (2010), Miller (2005), Victor Hobson (2003), Dorian Boose (1998), Reggie Terry (1997), Alex Van Dyke (1996), Ryan Yarborough (1994), Coleman Rudolph (1993), Kurt Barber (1992), Browning Nagle (1991), Reggie Rembert (1990), Terry Williams (1988), Alex Gordon (1987), Doug Williams (1986), Glenn Dennison (1984).

NOT ENOUGH BANG FOR THE BUCK

Kellen Clemens (2006), Jon McGraw (2002), LaMont Jordan (2001), Lester Lyles (1985), Johnny Hector (1983), Marion Barber (1981).
SOLID CHOICES

Let's see....

Devin Smith hasn't been able to prove himself yet because he just got here.

Amaro had a decent rookie year and got hurt

And David Harris has been a good player for the Jets.

Much ado about nothing. Thanks again Rich!

I disagree with Cimini about Hobson being a bust.

This list is sad in my opinion. I knew we struck out bad but not too many great players on this list...

I agree that the 2nd round hasn't been as successful as it probably should've been. But I just view this as Cimini piling on the Jets as usual. He loves the SOJ narrative. It's why so many fans like me can't stand him.

Pretty grim list.

Couple of players I liked in the"Not enough bang for the buck" list. Jordan, Hector. Other wise, pretty depressing list considering a second is a high pick that should produce some good players Geno is standing on the ledge. Amaro gets one more year, but I've got a feeling Bowles doesn't like him.

Once I saw that he has Mike Nugent in the same category as guys like David Harris and Jim Sweeney, it told me all I needed to know about this article. Nonsense.

Parcells couldn't pick a 2nd rounder if it bit him in the ass..........it's been a longstanding overall weakness on draft day.

I bet hobson54 does too. :emoticon-cartoon-02

Here's a question for you.
Has anyone EVER agreed with anything Cimini has said?
HYATT™ can't think of anything, offhand.

Mike Nugent was a horrible pick. Any kicker in round 2 is horrible

For me the most egregious busts that stand out on this list is:

Browning Nagle - For a while this team was on it's way to something great, they just needed a QB. Nagle certainly was not the answer. That guy was f*cking horrible.

Alex Van Dyke - This guy to a much lesser degree than the others. Remember, the Jets already picked Keyshawn Johnson, so they already got some offensive talent.

Vladimir Ducasse - Oh god, how many different ways can you describe the complete incompetent disaster this kid was? He was drafted as the heir apparent to Damien Woody. Vlad was so bad he couldn't even be a decent blocking TE. Every single place they put him he would bring disaster to. When he was still here in 2013, I said cutting him would be addition by subtraction. Ultimately, that was the case.

This, not to mention screwed Rex Ryan. After Woody retired the Jets had a whole lot of sh*t at RT. IMO, it's still pretty unsettled. If the Jets wanted to remain SB contenders, they NEEDED to hit on Ducasse. Instead, he was horrible and now the Jets are a rebuilding team.

Stephen Hill - Don't really need to explain this. Just look at Vlad Ducasse and you'll get my exact sentiments on Stephen Hill.
