Green Jets & Ham

Lets Start with the Suspensions, IR's and PUP's who won't count against the 53 to start the season:

Sheldon Richardson (SUS)
Oday Aboushi (SUS)
Stevan Ridley (PUP)
Dee Milliner (IR Short Term)
Jace Amaro (IR Season Ending)
Antonio Allen (IR Season Ending)
Zach Sudfeld (IR Season Ending)
Kevin Vickerson (IR Season Ending)

==============================

Now the locks and position battles as I see it.

The Bubbles I will list in my own projected depth chart, but thats JMO, I could be wrong.

QB (Locks)
Ryan Fitzpatrick
Bryce Petty

QB (Bubbles)
Geno Smith
Matt Flynn
Josh Johnson

Extremely tough call, I'm not even sure how many QB's we keep, much less who?

Geno might be in trouble after the show Josh Johnson put on out there tonight. It wouldn't shock me.

====

RB (Locks)
Chris Ivory
Bilial Powell

RB (Bubbles)
Zac Stacy
Tommy Bohanon (FB)
Daryl Richardson
Julian Howsare (FB)

Stacy makes it, Bohanon probably makes it too, Richardson is probably out, and Howsare is a PS candidate.

====

WR (Locks)
Brandon Marshall
Eric Decker
Devin Smith

WR (Bubbles)
Quincy Enunwa
Chris Owusu
Walter Powell
Jeremy Kerley
Shaq Evans

Enunwa is a borderline lock, I believe Owusu & Powell stick, Kerley might be in trouble, PS for Evans.

====

TE (Locks)
Jeff Cumberland

TE (Bubbles)
Quincy Enunwa
Wes Saxton
Arthur Lynch
Kellen Davis

Enunwa is a borderline lock as a WR/H-Back combo, not sure what happens after that.

====

OL (Locks)
LT Brick Ferguson
OG James Carpenter
C Nick Mangold
OG Willie Colon
RT Breno Giacomini

OL (Bubbles)
Jarvis Harrison
Ben Ijalana
Brian Winters
Dakota Dozier
Charles Brown
Brent Qvale
Wesley Johnson

Harrison is the only one I feel reasonably sure of, after that its anyones guess.

====

DL (Locks)
Mo Wilkerson
Leonard Williams
Damon Harrison

DL (Bubbles)
TJ Barnes
Leger Douzable
Stephen Bowen
Deon Simon
Jordan Williams
Ronald Talley

Barnes, Douzable and Bowen make it, Simon and Williams to the PS, Talley is out of PS options.

Simon could surprise and knockout Bowen or Douzable.

====

OLB (Locks)
Quinton Coples
Lorenzo Mauldin

OLB (Bubbles)
Trevor Reilly
Calvin Pace
Jason Babin
Deion Barnes
Julian Howsare

Reilly, Pace and Babin all stick, Barnes and Howsare are PS candidates.

====

ILB (Locks)
David Harris
Demario Davis

ILB (Bubbles)
Jamari Lattimore
Erin Henderson
Taiwan Jones
Joe Mays

Two of the four will be kept and I have no idea which two, its one of the most intriguing battles as I see it.

====

CB (Locks)
Darrelle Revis
Antonio Cromartie
Buster Skrine

CB (Bubbles)
Darrin Walls
Dexter McDougle
Marcus Williams
Keon Lyn

All but Keon Lyn make it.

====

S (Locks)
Calvin Pryor
Marcus Gilchrist

S (Bubbles)
Rontez Miles
Jaiquawn Jarrett
Durell Eskridge

Eskridge to the PS, the other two make it.

====

ST (Locks)
PK Nick Folk
LS Tanner Purdum

ST (Bubbles)
P Ryan Quigley

Quigley gets cut and we claim a Punter on waivers, possibly Brandon Fields who was cut by Miami.

IMO these are the bubble guys who helped their own cause the most in this last preseason game:

Josh Johnson who flashed some real ability as a dual threat, lethal with the legs but made some nice throws too.

Walter Powell who showed he can be a very good return man and he's no slouch at WR too.

Chris Owusu who flashed everything he usually flashes when healthy ... the dude can flat-out play in this league.

Zac Stacy who came out tonight and really ran the ball with authority and a sense of urgency.

Jarvis Harrison is starting to flash what Gil Brandt loved about him. This kid is a Road Grader. Kicks ass and takes names.

TJ Barnes who had been a little quiet until now, but tonight he made his presence felt and probably held off Simon.

Jordan Williams has flashed a little bit in all of these games. Doesn't make the 53, but he locked up a spot on the PS.

Trevor Reilly who has been a stud off the edge this entire preseason and tonight was no exception.

Taiwan Jones was quiet until tonight, but tonight he showed why a lot of people were surprised he went undrafted.

Lattimore & Mays continued to do enough to make sure you knew they were out there, as they have all preseason.

Darrin Walls was probably the star of the game with two INT's. He made a LOUD & CLEAR statement.

Finally Rontez Miles who hits the way we were told Calvin Pryor hits, like he wants to knock your ass into tomorrow!

Really liked what I saw out of Taiwan Jones last night, which makes the backup ILB competition very interesting. Unless I'm mistaken, DSimon also flashed and was pretty active for a man his size. The DL cuts from this team will be hot commodities.

Wesley Johnson is the backup center, that's why Freeman is gone.

Aboushi clearly outplayed Winters last night, and that's not anything new. But for whatever reason the coaching staff seems ready to cut Aboushi

After last night it seems both Powell and Owusu should make the roster. Enunwa is a lock. Smith, Decker and Marshall are locks. Would seem last night may have made Kerley a bubble guy.

At ILB, I agree Harris and Davis are likely locks but I am not sure Davis has been better than Mays and Lattimore and Taiwan looks like he can really be a good player. Really tough call.

Geno is not on the bubble.

I have no idea what they do at TE. Most likely spot I think for a waiver wire pick up.

We are going to cut some really good players. If I was Mac and Bowles I would factor in youth and upside in keeping players.

Okay, I couldn't take anything in the OP seriously after I read "Geno on the bubble." It doesn't matter what you think of Geno, if you have paid attention to anything the coaching staff and Mac have said about Geno's progress and talent, you have to know that there is no way that they are cutting Geno.

I agree but crazier things have happened. If Bowles and Gailey are confident that Fitz will remain the starter then Bowles will need to see if it even makes sense keeping Geno over someone that could be productive for the team.

Having said that, I see the team cutting Flynn and putting Petty backup QB before seeing Geno cut.

We are definitely going to cut a few good players. After watching this game, I like Owusu and Powell a lot. But Enunwa and Evans are going to be tough cuts. I'm increasingly coming to the conclusion that the team may cut Kerley, despite the cap hit. Wouldn't shock me. Zac Stacy made the team. No doubt about it.

As much as I think Matt Flynn earned his spot as the backup, I also wouldn't be shocked to see the team go with Johnson instead. He played well, too. He threw it well and showed good running ability. A good problem to have for the Jets, considering all the Geno drama.

My boys Reilly and Miles played decent. Still rooting for them. Darrin Walls probably solidified a CB spot. We're going to be cutting a few CB's that are decent players.

IMO here's what happens with the QB's.

Right now Macc calls all 31 GM's and tells them Smith is available.

Flynn is cut the day before the Browns game. (wink wink) they go into the season with Fitz, Petty, and Smith. The day after the Browns game Flynn is resigned so his contract isn't guaranteed.

Macc and Bowles start praying that a QB is injured in the first 4 games, so they can trade Smith and get some value. If that doesn't happen, IR is still an option I guess. I would use it, don't think they will. If no trade partner arises, Flynn is cut week 5.

It will then be Fitz, Smith, Petty. Just my opinion.

Quarterbacks (4)

Ryan Fitzpatrick, Geno Smith, Bryce Petty, Matt Flynn

This position really complicates the entire makeup of the 53. The trend has been for teams to only carry two quarterbacks. But the Jets have to carry four because of Smith’s injury. I give Flynn the nod over Josh Johnson.

Running backs (4)

Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell, Zac Stacy, Tommy Bohanon

It looks like a certainty that Stevan Ridley will open the season on the PUP list. He has not practiced yet as he recovers from knee surgery. Stacy beats out Daryl Richardson for the last spot.

Wide receivers (6)

Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, Devin Smith, Quincy Enunwa, Jeremy Kerley, Chris Owusu

Owusu beats out Shaq Evans and Walt Powell in my book. He just flashed more potential. Powell might be a better kick returner, but Owusu is a better receiver. I’m not buying the idea that Kerley could get cut.

Tight ends (2)

Jeff Cumberland, Kellen Davis

Jace Amaro’s season-ending injury will have the Jets scanning the waiver wire this weekend for another tight end.

Offensive line (9)

Nick Mangold, D’Brickashaw Ferguson, James Carpenter, Willie Colon, Breno Giacomini, Wesley Johnson, Brian Winters, Ben Ijalana, Jarvis Harrison

The biggest question here is what to do with Harrison. The fifth-round pick is far from ready to play and would be better off on the practice squad, but do the Jets risk exposing him to waivers? I think they keep him on the 53 and treat this like a redshirt year.

Defensive line (6)

Muhammad Wilkerson, Damon Harrison, Leonard Williams, Leger Douzable, T.J. Barnes, Stephen Bowen

Sheldon Richardson does not count against the 53 during his suspension. Ronald Talley could get the last spot over Bowen.

Linebackers (8)

David Harris, Demario Davis, Quinton Coples, Calvin Pace, Lorenzo Mauldin, Trevor Reilly, Jason Babin, Jamari Lattimore

Ideally, I would keep another inside linebacker — either Erin Henderson or Joe Mays — but the math just doesn’t work.

Cornerbacks (7)

Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, Buster Skrine, Dee Milliner, Marcus Williams, Dexter McDougle, Darrin Walls

The team can place Milliner [wrist injury] on injured reserve with a designation to return on Sunday afternoon, but for now he makes the 53.

Safeties (4)

Calvin Pryor, Marcus Gilchrist, Jaiquawn Jarrett, Rontez Miles

The Jets may just go with three safeties in order to get another player at a different position, but I really think Miles has earned a roster spot.

Special teams (3)

Nick Folk, Tanner Purdum, Ryan Quigley

This group is back for another year.

I think we'll be looking over the waiver wire to find a tight end for week 1. no way we go into the season with that group. I think Fauria from Detroit will be cut and we'll pick him up

What did you think of McDougle? I don't think he had a good showing last night.

Honestly, I didn't even notice him. Sometimes that's a good thing for a CB. But it's possible I missed him getting beaten. Watching backups, it's tough seeing just the #'s on the jersey and not knowing who's who.

But yeah, McDougle could get cut. Looking at the position, you've got Revis, Cromartie, Skrine, Milliner, and probably Walls after last night. That's five. After that, it's anybody's guess.

Really, he looked lost last night. Had high hopes for him, but against backups last night he looked poor and out of position most of the time he played.

Thanks. Also Marcus Williams. I think he solidified his roster spot. he played well in preseason.
