CUTDOWN TO 53: Locks and Bubbles

Geno Smith is not "on the bubble"
I don't mean bubble in the literal sense, I divided the locks from the non locks and used bubble for lack of a better word.

All things considered, I believe Geno makes it, thats why he's first on my bubble list, but I don't think he's a lock. I don't think he can be viewed as a lock because this staff didn't draft him to be the future of this organization, the prior staff did, so they have no personal investment in Geno. The guy they drafted in the hopes that he can be the future is Petty, thats why I DO have him as a lock. The other lock is Fitzy because he's the starter. The other three are not as certain in my view, and Geno getting himself involved in an incident that ended with a broken jaw was not very pleasing to Bowles either, he looked pissed when that happened and did not absolve Geno of his contribution to that debacle. Lastly Flynn and Johnson played well last night, Johnson in particular looked much better than anyone expected after being with the team for a week. So I see some tough decisions at QB, and while I expect Geno to make it, it wouldn't completely shock me if he doesn't, thats why I can't call him a lock. Locks mean locks, as in - mortal locks. :)

Okay, I couldn't take anything in the OP seriously after I read "Geno on the bubble."
Really, you dismiss the entire post over one disagreement?

What if we just have a disagreement over the definition of the word "lock", because I expect Geno to make it too, thats why I listed him FIRST on my bubble depth chart. I expect all of the players I listed at or near the top of those charts to make it, I just don't view them as locks. Locks are guys who pretty much have to die or suffer a catastrophic illness or injury not to make the team. Now even if you view Geno as one of those guys and I don't, because the last time I looked he wasn't exactly Steve Young, he's been the 32nd ranked QB in the league entering this season (and I say that as someone who likes Geno's potential), but that hardly qualifies him as a lock in my view, but even if we disagree on Geno's status, is that really a good reason to dismiss the entire rest of the post?

I know there isn't a spot for him unless they only keep two TE's, but the Jets would be well served to keep Walter Powell on the roster. They have no bona fide punt returner, and watching Kerley fair catch every ball is limiting for a team that may struggle to score points.

Powell is by far our best returner. we should find a way to keep him just for that.

Absolutely he should be the primary return man, thats not even a close call, and thats what makes him a valuable keep at the backend of your WR depth chart, he can also contribute heavily on specials.

Obviously he's not a lock, but I'll be surprised and disappointed if he's cut.

Ham, You don't have to tell anyone on this site how they should understand what you mean. You are one of the most respected posters here. I'll stand behind you and I am sure many others will too. Besides, I think if a team offered a bag of Tootsie rolls for Geno, i would hope Management would jump all over it!

LOL

Thanks AFA, I appreciate the sentiments brother.

HYATT™ would hate to see Wes Saxon cut loose.
He's going to make somebody a very fine blocking and receiving TE someday, in the Health Miller/Matt Spaeth mold. Not a guy you notice on the field but a guy you immediately notice when he's NOT there. (Spaeth was that way all the way back in Gopherland too.)

Why is Mr. Smith sacrosanct?
There's no investment in him monetarily, ($1M cap hit is shikken feed), the current regime owes no allegiance to him, he's NEVER played above a worst QB in the league level, he's a PROVEN dunce with a low likability quotient in the locker room, almost a cancer, but not quite, and he's no more talented than 2 dozen other "athletes" attempting to be QBs in the NFL - he's just gotten more OPPORTUNITIES to prove how badly he can play.

Flynn, for all of his rubber band elbow ligaments and hammy issues is majorly smarter, not actually any more injury prone than most QBs who'll miss a game now and then, & he costs the team HALF of what Mr. Smith would.

The Amish Rifle, Matt Flynn as his backup, and both as great mentors for Petty is a win/win deal for the Jets.
Johnson can get to the p.s. - there's too many other QB prospects floating around to believe he is somehow "special" enough to get snagged off the waivers wire on the way there.
They can attempt to trade Geno but no GM in his right mind is giving up a draft pick for him & all he will do is swallow a much-needed roster spot for half the season.
Adios GeNOT.
If this staff keeps him, HYATT™'s respect for their savy just drops a notch.

McDougle, as HYATT™ has said since his draft day, is already unemployed. He just hasn't realized it yet.

While I don't think Geno will be cut, I wouldn't be surprised if he is... There are some tough decisions coming today for the team...

What is good though is having these tough decisions. We should have a roster filled with talent, maybe not Superbowl winning talent, but certainly better than we are used to.

Roll on tonight when we find out who's in..

While I somewhat agree with your assessment of Geno Smith, he won't get released this year. He still has value to the team in case Fitzpatrick gets hurt or stinks it up. Smith knows the offense and has a better arm than any other QB on the roster except Petty (who's not ready).

Next year however, will be a different story...

Unless we get a trade offer, I do expect Geno to be here this season...
