55 years ago tonight, September 9, 1960, the first ever American Football League game was played at Nickerson Field on the campus of Boston University. The game was played on a Friday night, as were most Patriot home games back in the early days of the league. The Patriots did not want to go head to head up against the NFL and NY Giants on Sundays (Giants were the fan favorites of most New Englanders at the time) or Harvard and Boston College on Saturdays. The NY Titans would open their season two days later with a 27-3 victory over the Buffalo Bills at the Polo Grounds.
The first TD pass in league history would be thrown by Broncos QB Frank Tripucka. Tripucka had been hired to be the Broncos QB coach. Over the summer, the team held a scrimmage that was open to the public. The Broncos charged $1 admission to the scrimmage and realized that the quality of play was so bad that Broncso coaches and officials were concerned that the fans weren't getting their money's worth. Tripucka, who had been a star QB in college at Notre Dame, decided to suit up midway through the scrimmage. He would remain the Broncos starting QB for the next 3 seasons.
