If idzik is fired, does the fact that He was handcuffed and never had the chance to select a coach make potential gms weary of taking the job?

Idzik wasn't exactlu treated correctly here....

He didn't pick his own coach, but he did pick his own players. He sucks at that!! Plus he knew what he was getting into before he started.

No matter who the coach was, it doesn't make his horrible FA's and draft picks any better

I get all that, I just hope the way he was treated here doesn't make want any potential GMs to think twice about the job. I seriously doubt it will. This is a highly coveted job with only 32 slots to fill in the entire world but it's rare that GMs get a second chance, when they only have one shot, no one wants to go into a toxic situation.

But then again, all that the new GM would have to do is read this article below and he'll know that he will be replacing someone completely inadequate. It's Seth Walder's six reasons why Idzik has fallen so far so fast. In the beginning of the year, no one expected him to fall on his face this quickly. Nothing he has done has panned out.

My father would always say, you get what you pay for. I guess it works in football too. When you get something that's cheap, you get a **** product. That is what your 2014 Jets are.

If Woody Johnson’s patience has indeed run out with his general manager, he’ll let the world know on John Idzik’s 711th day on the job: Monday. That’s when Idzik and Rex Ryan could fall victims to a three- or four-win season by getting the ax from the team’s owner.

Only a few months ago, the chance of Idzik being fired at the end of the year was a long shot. Twelve losses later, he looks likely to do something that is quite the rarity: be an NFL GM for just two seasons.

How did he get to this point? No one can fall this far, this fast, without a multitude of errors. Let’s look at the mistakes that have marred Idzik’s tenure.

1. The Darrelle Revis saga
Idzik’s decision to trade Revis in April of 2013 was debatable, even in retrospect, because the Jets lost their best player but ended up drafting another star, Sheldon Richardson, with the 13th pick of that year’s draft they received in return.

But Idzik erred when he passed on the greatest opportunity he could have asked for: getting Revis back. The GM called his later Percy Harvin trade a “potential coup” but the real coup would have been getting first- and fourth-round picks for Revis only to re-sign him as a free agent a year later after the Bucs cut him. The only thing that could have made it worse actually happened: Revis signed with the Patriots instead.

The loss of Revis leads us right to . . .

2. Cornerback issues
Twenty months removed from that trade, the Jets are still searching for a solution at cornerback, a critical position in Rex Ryan’s defense.

John Idzik doesn't get Darrelle Revis back with Jets.

Idzik let Antonio Cromartie walk in 2013. That in and of itself was fine — Cromartie played poorly last season — but the GM failed to sign anyone substantial in his stead, despite a free agent market that boasted several high-end corners. The greatest sin was getting Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in the building and then allowing him to head across town to the Giants.

Instead, Idzik elected to sign journeyman corner Dimitri Patterson as a starter. That worked out even worse than even the harshest of skeptics could have imagined as Patterson went AWOL on the team in preseason and was released shortly thereafter.

3. The Money
The non-signing of a cornerback was puzzling because the team had so much money to play with. The Jets entered the season with more than $20 million in cap space, leaving fans wondering why they didn’t get a corner or another receiver considering the money will have to be spent eventually.

Idzik preached cap flexibility, which did net him Harvin via a midseason trade. That did little good for the team’s chances as the Jets were already out of the playoffs at that point.

4. Free Agency
Idzik’s biggest errors in free agency were moves, such as the aforementioned lack of cornerback deals he did not make. Similarly, the GM chose to attend the Texas Tech pro day last offseason instead of hosting Emmanuel Sanders on a visit. With Sanders’ meeting with the Jets pushed back, he ended up signing with Denver before he ever got around to visiting Florham Park.

Of the signings Idzik did make — mostly bargain basement deals — he had his fair share of busts, especially early on. The signing of Mike Goodson backfired when he was arrested in the offseason before his first season. Between a suspension relating to that, an injury in 2013 and failing to report to minicamp, he played in two games for the Jets.

David Garrard retired and unretired but never got close to the field. Stephen Peterman and Antonio Garay didn’t make the team in 2013; same with Jacoby Ford in 2014.

Eric Decker, Breno Giacomini, Jason Babin and Willie Colon have all been adequate but unspectacular, and Chris Johnson disappointed this season.

5. Geno Smith and the draft
The only good thing about drafting Geno Smith was that he wasn’t a first-round pick. But even as the 39th pick of the 2013 draft, what Smith has done is simply waste two years of the organization’s time. The Jets gave him a shot, it didn’t work out, and now they need to find a new quarterback again.

Though Idzik ought to be lauded for his selection of Richardson with the 13th pick last season, as well as trading a fourth-rounder for Chris Ivory, the majority of his selections have not paid dividends yet. Dee Milliner, Smith and Brian Winters have not helped the team much to date, and Calvin Pryor and Jace Amaro have not been impact players in their rookie campaigns.

6. Losing the fans
Perhaps the last straw for many fans was Idzik’s mid-year press conference, which included a rambling, 19-minute monologue. After that the fans turned on him to the point where billboards went up and planes flew over practice calling for his firing.

That may have been the GM’s undoing, because Johnson has to consider that if he keeps Idzik, he’s going to need to find a head coach willing to come into an environment where the general manager is already reviled.

I asked before and I'll ask again. What GM had two better drafts than John Idzik? Please account for the fact that many of the "20 draft picks" were 5th and 6th rounders. And the fact that he traded a 4th for Ivory. Whatever you do please don't question why he didn't select Odell Beckham like that numbskull from the old forum.

What I think it boils down to is that he struck out when he drafted Geno. He also drafted Shaq Evans and Saunders rather than Mathews and [fill in the blank]. But still, trying to identify a GM who drafted better is difficult to do.

Mike Lombardi got 1 year and done as GM of the Browns is anyone crying about that?? A toxic situation is getting sprayed with agent Orange or being a cop in Ferguson, Missouri or NYC not getting paid millions to run a football team..

It will certainly cause prospective GMs to have second thoughts, but Woody won't make that mistake twice. No self-respecting GM is going to have a coach forced on him. Idzik had absolutely no leverage because he was an accountant who wanted to be a GM, and no one else was going to give him that opportunity. There was no one else even remotely interested in Idzik two years ago, and When Idzik is fired on Monday he won't get a single phone call from another team to interview for a GM spot. Ever.

A legitimate GM candidate will make it clear up front that he will be assembling his own staff, including head coach. Now, if that candidate wants Rex, so be it. But it will be his choice, not Woody's.

Also, in my mind, Idzik extended Rex last season, so in effect he rehired Rex, and Rex was his choice. If he wanted his own coach and Woody forced him to keep Rex, Idzik should have had the stones to walk and tell the world why. His silence, and willingness to continue to take Woody's money shows that he was at least complicit, and possibly instrumental in extending Rex's contract.

Why would they say that? Their glad he's the Jets' coach/GM

Ok Ok tell me what makes you believe that the other GMs think Idzik is a fool? One piece of evidence? Anything? any cryptic statement from anyone?

No GM is going to say another sitting GM is an idiot. Even Rex doesn't do that. You asked for this before. I gave you about 4 different links saying in one way another that he is incompetent. Didn't even use Mehta, that was to easy.

Even Charly Casserly, the guy the Jets are going to hire, indicated that he was incompetent in his interview when he said Rex should have been coach of the year, and later the FO didn't give him the players the team needs.

It's not just the local media. Idzik has become a punch line on all the NFL shows. All they have to do is mention his name to get a laugh

OK so what makes you think that any other GM thinks Idzik is a fool? what leads you to that conclusion? How about you point to a single GM that has had a better draft than Idzik?

Do you think the Saints GM thinks he's fool after he traded a 4th for Ivory?

Do you think the Bucs GM thinks he's a fool for trading away Revis for a first?

How do you think the Raiders feel after signing Howard when the Jets got equal value for a lot less guaranteed money?

And finally ... name one NFL show that characterized Idzik as a fool or who got a laugh ... just one. You see the problem ... you've been watching TV shows where the reporters like Cimini and Lupica are on the show.

If there's no other GM who had better drafts, then what's your criticism against Idzik?

We were in most games and lost because of the secondary in most case. Geno looked bad in some of the others and was pick 6ing for some reason. I don't blame Geno's collapse on Rex or Idzik but the secondary is on Idzik. I'm sure he didn't anticipate Milliner's injury and the impact it would have had.
