WR Titus Davis
6' 1"/200
4.51 forty

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS: Outstanding route runner. Has foot quickness to disorient corners off the line of scrimmage. Can "sell and sink" -- driving defenders vertically before sinking hips and turning quickly for easy completions. Was able to dominate lesser players playing off coverage. Wins at top of his routes with his hips coming out of his stems and finds ball quickly. Plus awareness with feet near sideline and tracks ball over his shoulder like an NFL veteran. Good leaper with outstanding body control. Has ability to adjust to poor throws and make tough catches. Desired football intelligence with understanding of coverages. Sits down in space against zone coverage and weaves through traffic on shallow crossers. Maximizes yards-after-catch opportunity.

WEAKNESSES: Not a twitch receiver. Can operate in tight spaces, but doesn't have the acceleration to create separation consistently against NFL-caliber cornerbacks. Doesn't eat up cushion quickly. Will be forced to make contested catches as a pro. Played against very marginal secondaries. Despite ability to make tough catches, has more focus drops than expected. Longer corners can get into him in press coverage. Average adjustment to lower throws. Lacks shiftiness to become much of a YAC threat as a pro.

DRAFT PROJECTION: Round 5

BOTTOM LINE: Evaluators and teams might focus on Davis' lack of speed, but his ability to win with his routes should not be undersold. Davis has excellent ball skills and foot quickness and could be a terrific fit for a West Coast offense looking for an outside receiver who can make plays near the goal line.

Bio: Four-year starter awarded All-conference honors since his freshman season. Posted a career-best 61 receptions for 1109 receiving yards as a junior. Played in 10 games last season, missing three with an ankle injury, but still produced 60 receptions for 980 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns.

Positive: Quick, fluid receiver who comes up big on third down and red zone. Quickly releases off the line of scrimmage, immediately gets to top speed and displays a burst. Nicely tracks passes in the air. Agile, snatches passes from the air and quickly transitions running after the catch. Gets up in a crowd or over defenders to come away with receptions. Possesses soft and strong hands, easily adjusts to errant throws and plays with balance and body control. Overall, very reliable.

Negative: Has short arms and small hands. Unnecessarily lets passes get inside him at times. Solid speed but not a true vertical threat.

Analysis: Davis was ultra productive on the college level but lacks great measurables for the NFL. His quickness, run after the catch skill and ability to consistently come away with the underneath receptions will result in Davis being the fourth receiver in a West Coast offense.

Gotta believe that MM & Co. know what they are doing, and if they think this guy is worthy of a spot so be it.

I'll always root for the "great technician" over the naturally gifted athlete.

Maybe it's the whole underdog thing, but I appreciate people who work at their craft instead of just letting God-given ability take over . . .

This was a pre-draft column, kid thought he would be drafted, must have been disappointed.

Titus Davis has been a playmaker since the day he set foot on the turf at Central Michigan's Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

Now it's time to see if that translates to the next level.

CMU's record-breaking wide receiver leads a group of Chippewas prospects hoping to hear their name called in the 2015 NFL Draft in Chicago.

"It's not only me, I have a wife and a son to take care of," Davis said. "We're all excited with where we'll end up. I think that's maybe the most exciting part not knowing where I'll end up. That's exciting."

Davis is the headliner among a group of CMU prospects that includes defensive lineman Leterrius Walton and running back Thomas Rawls. However, Davis is projected to be the first Chippewa taken in the draft since Eric Fisher went No. 1 overall to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013.

A 6-foot, 196-pound pass catcher, Davis has been one of the most prolific players at his position in the nation over the last four years, which has him pegged as a mid-round prospect by most draft experts.

He was first team Freshman All-American and earned all-Mid-American Conference honors all four years in Mount Pleasant, including first team accolades the last two years. As a junior, he led the nation averaging 18.9 yards per catch, including a 97-yard touchdown reception against New Hampshire.

Davis is the only player in FBS history to record eight touchdown receptions in four straight seasons and is CMU's all-time leader in career receiving yards (3,705), career touchdown receptions (37) and touchdown receptions in a single season (13).

He capped his career on a high note with six receptions for 142 yards and four touchdowns in the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl. His last collegiate reception was a "Hail Mary," three-lateral touchdown pass as time expired that drew the Chippewas within a point of Western Kentucky with no time on the clock, earning a spot on the 2015 AP All-Bowl Team.

Davis said that helped heading into the evaluation process of the draft.

"I think it was a gateway and a door to watch more film," he said. "I think there are more plays that show my ability, but most definitely that helped me out."

He earned an invite to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis along with Walton and Rawls to work out in front of all of the NFL franchises alongside the best prospects in the country.

Davis ran a 4.51 in the 40-yard dash and recorded a 32.5-inch vertical, despite battling a lingering knee injury he suffered early in the 2014 season. However, he received rave reviews for doing what a wide receiver does — catch the football.

"Davis has excellent ball skills and foot quickness and could be a terrific fit for a West Coast offense looking for an outside receiver who can make plays near the goal line," his NFL.com analysis said.

Davis said he's fully recovered from the injury and is at 100 percent heading into the draft. An Illinois native, he said he's planning on sticking close to home with friends and family to find out his future home.
