That must have pleased Bowles to no end.

I just don't think Richardson gets it.

The part that Sheldon is right about is that they always find a way to squeak out a win. I don't have a problem with him saying they think this will be a win. They have the team that can actually win this year.

I like it. If they get killed so be it, but those words can motivate teammates as much as opponents.

Having said that I agree Bowles isn't too happy about it . . .

Tom Brady takes notice of Jets' stifling defense

The Jets-Patriots rivalry was one of the fiercest in the NFL during Rex Ryan's early years coaching Gang Green.

That same intensity between the two AFC East foes is back this season, mainly due to Darrelle Revis leaving the Patriots for his ex-team.

NFL on Yahoo!

Watch with the world as the Buffalo Bills take on the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first ever free global NFL live stream on October 25 at 9.30 a.m. ET. The game is available across Yahoo on your phone, tablet, laptop, console or connected TV. For free!
New York's 4-1 start added another level to this hyped Week 7 matchup and Tom Brady has taken notice of the Jets' resurgence on the field.

Brady sees many similarities in Todd Bowles' upstart Jets and his undefeated Patriots squad.

"You know, they're very similar to us in a lot of ways -- a big, tough, physical team," Brady said Wednesday, via ESPN. "They're very well coached. Coach Bowles has them playing really well. Very aggressive defensively."

Brady has picked apart every defense he's faced this season, but the Jets' stifling defense could give the four-time Super Bowl champion a tough time on Sunday.

As NFL Network's Andrew Siciliano pointed out on Twitter recently, the Jets rank No. 1 in total defense, scoring defense and red zone defense. Those top ranks are surprising considering how good the Broncos' defense has been this season.

The Jets' D hasn't received the credit it deserves, but it could gain attention by roughing up arguably the best quarterback in the NFL.

Brady is 20-5 in his career against the Jets in the regular season, yet this could be the best New York defense he's faced.

Bowles deserves a ton of credit for the turnaround. His team isn't racking up the sacks -- 28th most in the league -- though Bowles' defensive unit is only allowing 4.3 yards per play.

The Patriots' offense versus the Jet D is must-watch TV this Sunday.

Jets' Sheldon Richardson didn't guarantee win over New England Patriots. What he really meant

Jets defensive end Sheldon Richardson has been in a confident mood all week.

On Sunday, after the Jets beat Washington, Richardson said they were "licking our chops" for this Sunday's game at the Patriots.

On Wednesday, Richardson said the NFL's quarterback-friendly rules contribute to the success of Patriots signal caller Tom Brady. Richardson also acknowledged the road to the AFC East title still goes through New England.

That's the sort of candid stuff everyone has come to expect from Richardson.

On Thursday, Richardson spoke to Metro's Kristian Dyer and appeared to guarantee the Jets would beat the Patriots on Sunday.

"This is going to be another win for us," Richardson said.

But here's the thing: Richardson was not making a guarantee with that statement. Dyer had asked him if a win over the Patriots would provide validation for the Jets. Richardson's response was essentially: "No, this would be just like any other win."

That's what Richardson meant by "this is going to be another win." He meant "just any other regular win," with no feelings of validation attached. He wasn't saying Sunday is going to be "another" win, as in the Jets' fifth victory of this season.

Consider the rest of what Richardson told Dyer: "We'll let you all write the columns about validating wins and stuff like that. This is going to be another win in the win column, if we go out there and execute and do what we're supposed to do."

Richardson, speaking hypothetically, was downplaying the validation aspect here. This would be just another win in the win column, and nothing more than that, he was saying.

As for what a potential win would mean, Richardson told Dyer: "We're going to be up in the division. That's how we're going to look at it. We're going to be the frontrunners. That's how we look at it."

Richardson was again explaining that a victory Sunday would mean nothing more than the Jets sitting atop the AFC East. Richardson was reiterating that the Jets would not attach any thoughts of validation to a win over the Patriots.

Richardson wasn't saying that the Jets definitely are going to "be up in the division" after Sunday. He was simply speaking in another hypothetical, in response to Dyer's question about whether a win Sunday would bring validation.

Make sense?

The wording of it all, without the proper context, is a bit confusing. So some clarification was required, for what apparently was a misunderstanding of Richardson's response.

Anyway, Richardson knows Sunday brings a big challenge.

The Jets are 4-1 entering this game, while the Patriots are 5-0. In all Patriots home game started by Brady — regular season and playoffs — New England is 106-18. That's a winning percentage of .855.

Later Thursday, Richardson apparently expressed displeasure about how his words were portrayed — and also mentioned NFL commissioner Roger Goodell:

This is a good article by Slater. Actually the original article by Dyer was a pretty good one also. Keep in mind that usually an author doesn't put the headline on the article. An editor does.

The headline was stupid. Richardson didn't guarantee anything.

I call nonsense on just another win

Right now, the Jets are one full game behind the Pats. A win, they are 1/2 game up, a loss 2 1/2 behind. They'll go from looking to win the division to competing for the wildcard with a loss.

They need to beat this team twice or there will be no playoff home game. I want to be freezing my a$$ off in Jersey in January

This is not just another game

Skrine is a very important player in this game. Sure hope he's ready to go. He says he is, we'll see what the Doc's say.

My how things have changed. I remember not to long ago when a player came staggering off the field, the announcers wold say some thing like, "looks like he just got his bell rung, he'll be back next series.

Now it could be a month, A player like Owusu, it could be a career ender.

Looks like Bilal Powell won't play Sunday. He's warming up once again without a helmet today. Ridley or Stacy the No. 2 back Sunday?

I like Ridley, but he hasn't had a touch in a year. As Maine has pointed out he puts the ball on the ground more then is optimum. His being so rusty makes me a bit nervous.

Crunching numbers for an inside look at Jets-Patriots matchup
2h
Rich Cimini, ESPN Staff Writer

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The folks at ESPN Stats & Information culled many interesting factoids about the New York Jets and their matchup Sunday against the New England Patriots. Enjoy:

1. The Jets blitz more than any team in the NFL (47.6 percent of dropbacks), while Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is tied for sixth in completion percentage against the blitz (69.2).

2. The Jets are the best defense on passes outside the hash marks (Total QBR: 28.0), a direct result of improved cornerback play with Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie. Meanwhile, Brady is terrific outside the hashmarks -- 84.1 Total QBR.

3. Ryan Fitzpatrick is on pace for the best Total QBR by a Jets quarterback in the 10 seasons of QBR data. He's had back-to-back games with a Total QBR above 90. No Jets quarterback has ever posted three straight games over 90.

4. Fitzpatrick's shortcomings are interceptions and long passes. With seven picks, he has the fourth-highest interception rate in the league (4.1). He's only 3-for-24 on pass attempts of at least 20 yards in the air, the lowest percentage in the league.

5. Brandon Marshall’s 511 receiving yards are the most through five games by a Jets player since Don Maynard in 1968. The most through six games is 662 (Maynard, 1967).

6. Chris Ivory leads the NFL in rushing yards per game (115.5). He averages 2.81 yards after contact per rush, the second-highest mark. He has run for at least 100 yards in two of his four meetings against the Patriots.

7. The Patriots are the only team with a third-down conversion percentage above 50 percent (50.9), and they're second in red-zone efficiency (73.9 percent). Their three turnovers are tied for the fewest.

8. New England is 18-4 in October games since 2010, including seven wins in a row.

It looks like Jets' Buster Skrine (concussion) might play Sunday at New England Patriots

It looks like Jets' Buster Skrine (concussion) might play Sunday at New England Patriots

FLORHAM PARK — Buster Skrine, the Jets' slot cornerback, took another step Friday toward playing in Sunday's game at the Patriots.

Skrine, who is recovering from a concussion sustained in last Sunday's win over Washington, was not in a red (non-contact) jersey during the 30-minute open portion on Friday's practice.

As Skrine worked his way through the NFL's post-concussion assessment protocol, he was in a red jersey Thursday, when he participated on a limited basis in practice. Skrine did not participate in Wednesday's practice.

The Patriots have a wide receiver who thrives in the slot, Julian Edelman, so the Jets could use Skrine on Sunday. And it looks like they might indeed have him.

Jets coach Todd Bowles will announce the official final injury report later Friday.

Running back Bilal Powell, who sprained his ankle against Washington, once again did not have his helmet during the open portion of Friday's practice. He didn't practice Wednesday or Thursday. So it looks like he won't play Sunday.

Powell is the Jets' third-down/No. 2 back. His likely absence means the Jets will have to choose between Zac Stacy and Stevan Ridley (a former Patriot, in his first game back from a major knee injury) — or a combination of both — as the complementary back to Chris Ivory.

Expect Powell to be listed as out or doubtful when the Jets release their Friday injury report.

Silverman: Matchups — Not Emotions — Should Help Jets Against Patriots
October 23, 2015 12:03 PM

Any time your previous head coach was as bombastic and outspoken as Rex Ryan, it’s easy to make comparisons with the current leader and come to definitive conclusions.

But much to his credit, Todd Bowles has never been under the impression that his job was to win the public relations battle with the former head coach by creating headlines. His goal from Day 1 has been to get the Jets to play improved football on an every-day basis.

A 4-1 getaway is an indication that he is doing a good job, but there are major tests during the 16-game schedule. One comes this Sunday when the Jets go to Foxboro to take on the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.

Ryan used to make this game out to be something of a crusade for the Jets, and that was almost certainly the wrong approach. The way to succeed in the NFL is to prepare as much as possible for each game, and not assign emotional value to some games and not others.

That can change in the postseason when a coach must ask players to “spill their bucket” to survive and advance, but it’s counterproductive in the regular season.

The key for any top-level head coach is figuring out the most significant matchups in any game and maximizing your team’s strengths and minimizing its weaknesses.

The Patriots have been rolling over most of their opponents this season, but the idea that they are unbeatable and have no weaknesses is simply ridiculous. The Pats are just a middle of the pack defensive team as they rank 16th overall, including 22nd against the run.

This plays right into the Jets’ hands because they have one of the league’s best and most underrated offensive weapons in running back Chris Ivory.

Ivory has already run for 460 yards and five touchdowns, and he is averaging 5.5 yards per carry. Ivory is finishing his runs with a nasty punch and he refuses to go down after first contact. The Pats have a brilliant linebacker in Jamie Collins who leads the team in tackles, and a hard-working defensive line that can slow down the interior run.

This is a battle that Ivory can win, but it will take his best effort to do so. He has played well through the first five games, but it will take a little more here.

The more success the Jets have with the running game, the more dividends it will pay because it will keep Tom Brady and the New England offense off the field.

Brandon Marshall has to come through for the Jets in this game, and while the big receiver has been troubled by a calf injury in practice, he appears to have an advantage over Malcolm Butler.

Last season’s Super Bowl hero has continued to work hard and improve for Bill Belichick. He has become New England’s best cover man, and he has eight passes defensed and an interception to go with 24 tackles. But he is going to get worn down by Marshall, and the matchup should swing the receiver’s way by the second half.

The balance of power in the secondary clearly belongs to the Jets, and the key matchup will likely feature Darrelle Revis going up against Julian Edelman. Revis remains the best cover man in the league, and after helping the Pats win the Super Bowl a year ago, he has been on top of his game (three interceptions, six passes defensed) for the Jets this season.

Edelman has 40 receptions, 449 yards and four touchdowns and his quickness and change-of-direction ability will give Revis a test. But Revis is as much a student of the game and a master of film study as he is a great athlete. He knows Edelman quite well, anyway, and the Jets are expecting Revis to do an excellent job of limiting New England’s top receiver.

Ryan Fitzpatrick has done a fine job of leading the Jets through five weeks, but he will be forced by the Patriots to play his best game to date. Defensive coordinator Matt Patricia is going to try to set Fitzpatrick up and take the game away from the Jets by creating interceptions.

Fitzpatrick has thrown seven picks this season, and when he was playing for the Buffalo Bills from 2009 through 2012, he threw an average of 16 per season. He had his biggest problems against New England, as he threw 17 in seven games when he was the Bills’ starting quarterback.

Fitzpatrick is smart and gutsy, but he cannot take unnecessary chances because he thinks a big play might be available. He has got to dial it back a notch and let the Jets’ ground control game do its job.

That’s the mental part of the game, and you might think it would be easy for the Harvard-educated Fitzpatrick.

It is not, but if Fitzpatrick can keep his emotions in check and helpthe Jets maintain possession, they have an excellent chance of walking into Foxboro and handing the Patriots their first loss of the season.

I find it interesting that many posters (myself included!) had a 'bad feeling' before the Washington game and most posters (myself not included) have a 'positive feeling' against the Pats. I certainly hope we play well and win.

I am particularly concerned about Dion Lewis coming out of the backfield ala Sproles. He is going to try to dink and dunk us to death and I would HATE to see Davis or Harris trying to cover Lewis.

It should be interesting and I fully expect everyone (myself included) to have a 'bad feeling' about the Raiders!

I had the same concerns about Lewis because of what Sproles did to us. Then I went back and looked at Sproles' stats this year against Jets and saw that he only caught 4 balls for 19 yards and ran 11 times for 17 yards. These are hardly troubling numbers. I guess what we are all focused on is his punt return, which was a killer.

It's that wheel route that's a killer. I feel like a team has run it once each game so far this season. The Eagles were the only ones that were able to connect on it. It was Ryan Matthews with the long catch.

Last week, Cousin was off on his throw. If he was on target, it would have been a long gainer as well.

Everyone is worried about the Jets D matchups.

My question is this. With Owusu and Enuwa out, does kerley get the nod in the slot? Or does decker play the slot and Smth on the outside?

It's interesting because Kerley has been an issue for the Patriots, and with their secondary depth, Kerley is the type of guy that could have a huge game. I am curious what Bowles/Chan do here. & games against the pats, he has 34 rec for 500yds, 2 tds
