When word got out this week that Jets owner Woody Johnson was prepared to hire Charley Casserly as a consultant, the understanding was that Johnson would do so only if he were to make changes within the organization.

It's now safe to say Johnson is moving ahead with making changes within the organization.

Two people with knowledge of the situation confirmed to NJ Advance Media late Friday night that Casserly already has begun contacting prospective replacements for head coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik, who both figure to be fired after Sunday's season finale in Miami against the Dolphins. The two people spoke on a condition of anonymity because neither was authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

This news comes on the heels of a report that appeared Friday on the Jets' team website that trashed many of the moves Idzik had made in his two years as GM.

Ryan has not yet been informed of his fate, a person familiar with his thinking said. But that same person also said Ryan had learned Casserly was contacting other coaching candidates, and that Ryan had already cleared out his office at One Jets Drive.

The situation is a bit like what happened toward the end of the 2013 season, when Ryan got word that Idzik—then in his first season as the Jets' GM—had begun reaching out to potential head coaches. Ryan responded by giving a fiery speech to the team the night before its next-to-last game of the year. The Jets then closed out the season by beating the Browns and Dolphins to finish 8-8, and Ryan got to keep his job.

But this time, with the Jets circling the drain at 3-12, Ryan appears to have accepted the inevitable.

Casserly, the former Washington and Texans GM, was tapped as a Jets consultant because he sits on the NFL's Career Development Advisory Panel, which the league formed late last year to assist teams with finding front-office help. Numerous reports say Casserly has reached out to another panel member, former Packers GM Ron Wolf, to assist with making whatever changes the Jets have coming.

Staff writer Jordan Raanan contributed reporting for this story.

The end of an era. It is time to move on, the only question remains, when will the story break. Either Sunday night or Monday morning.

Jets' website tackles question of John Idzik's job status

You know it's bleak when your team web site starts questioning your future.

The New York Jets' official web site, which usually puts a positive spin on just about everything, posted a report Friday raising the question of whether embattled general manager John Idzik will be fired in the coming days.

It seems rather obvious, as we've been saying for several days, but it's not every day that a team web site jumps on the speculation bandwagon. On Black Monday, owner Woody Johnson is expected to fire Idzik and Rex Ryan.

The report, by team reporter Eric Allen, is a candid evaluation of Idzik's good and bad moves are the last two years. In the end, Allen opines, "Johnson will ultimately decide if Idzik remains the right man to lead a football department in 2015."

Idzik is praised for his two best moves, drafting Sheldon Richardson and trading for Chris Ivory. From there, Allen details some of Idzik's clunkers. A sampling:

"The Jets had 12 draft picks in 2014, and just two—[safety Calvin] Pryor and tight end Jace Amaro—have prominent roles on the roster. Rookie linebackers I.K. Enemkpali and Trevor Reilly have shown promise, but the 2014 wide receiver draft class may go down as one of the best ever."

"Counting on Dee Milliner to step up as the team's No. 1 cornerback, Idzik elected not to spend big money as corners such as Revis and Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie were available on the free agency market. Fans clamored for a Revis reunion, but the perennial All-Pro joined the Jets' arch-nemesis instead."

While showing interest in DRC, the Jets let Antonio Cromartie walk in free agency and join the Cardinals. ... Milliner tore his Achilles against the Broncos. Free-agent signee Dimitri Patterson never played a regular-season game. And third-round pick Dexter McDougle tore his ACL in camp."

"(Geno) Smith, who owns a 10-18 record as an NFL starter, has not produced consistent results and has often been turnover-prone, like his predecessor, Mark Sanchez. ... In a passing league, the Jets finished 31st in passing when Smith was a rookie, and they are now 32nd entering this week's final game against the Dolphins."

There's no breaking news here, and many of the statements are obvious to those who have been reading about the Jets' woes for several months, but you don't expect to see this type of commentary from a public relation-driven organ.

Think with this video it removes all doubt if Idzik will be fired. Rex also.

As Cimini mentioned, it is almost never done that a GM is criticized on the Jets site. Looks like they are just stating the case why Idzik will be gone Monday. Rex I'm sure also

Folks at @FireJohnIdzik expect to have 1,000 ppl with "Fire Idzik" towels tomorrow at Sun Life Stadium, behind the Jets' bench. #nyj

Can these assholes give it up already? While I favor a total house cleaning, John Idzik does not deserve this. Just my opinion.

Do your job Idzik and make the team competitive and then fans wouldn't want you gone. When you leave a team without talent when it was out there to be had this is the result...heads roll.

Well the worst thing that can happen now is that Rex gets the team all fired up, and they beat the Fish. This could easily happen, the Fish were knocked out of the play offs last week, and really have nothing to play for.

Rex's guys will want to Win this one for Rex

Fish could have been 9-7 last year and the Jets beat them 20-7..

We avg around 16 points a game the Pats avg 30+ If a team has a good offense it keeps the D rested and ready to roll.. When your O does multiple 3 and outs it kills the D.. So I guess most fans are rooting for Geno to show what 3 and out is all about Sunday..

Common..the four Billboard/Towel a holes don't really give a damn about the Jets...their publicity stunts are about media attention from fellow Jet haters like Cimini and Mehta and nothing else

This is a new low for the JETS. What a low class move on the website. Woody J. is a complete sc*mbag if this is how it actually plays out. I can only see another Coslet era coming. I have never had another team that I have rooted for but I will root for Rex (as long as he is not in the AFC East). Jet ownership & fans have bottomed out.
Seriously, what coach is going to want this job....a loser, that's who.
