As if the return of Rex Ryan to Met Life Stadium to face his former team didn’t already have enough drama, Ryan confirmed Monday he will name IK Enemkpali one of the Bills captains for the game against the Jets Thursday Night on national television.
Enemkpali punched Jets quarterback Geno Smith and broke his jaw during training camp. He was released by the team and claimed off waivers by the Bills the next day. He was suspended four games by the league for the locker room incident.
Ryan has made it a practice to name former players of the Bills opposition, as well as players either from the home area of the other team or who played college football there, captains for the game that week. He also confirmed tight end Matthew Mulligan will be a captain Thursday night. Mulligan played for the Jets from 2009-2011.
“Yeah….,” Ryan responded when asked if there was a chance Enemkpali would be named captain for the game. “I’m gonna get ripped for whatever…I do this all the time. Anybody that’s played (for the opposition) you’re going to see. Will (Matthew) Mulligan be out there? Yep. He’ll be out there.”
Ryan said he does it to allow those players to be recognized by their former teammates. “That’s how I do the captains. If IK went out there by himself maybe that would be a different statement," he said. "But that’s not what we do."
Enemkpali was selected by the Jets in the 6th round of the 2014 draft. He played six games his rookie season for Ryan in New York. He’s played three games for the Bills, including lining up for a season-high 35-percent of the defensive snaps Sunday in the team’s 33-17 win over the Dolphins. He had two tackles.
