Reaching into the Week 11 mailbag for a New York Jets question:

[tweet]667724805978894336[/tweet]

@RichCimini: It would be tough to get fair-market value for Sheldon Richardson because, as you note, he almost certainly will be hit with a personal-conduct violation stemming from his July arrest. The quicker it gets resolved, the quicker the Jets -- and other teams -- can assess the risk-reward of keeping/trading him. Do you think teams will be tripping over themselves to trade for a player who could start the season with an eight-game suspension? I don't know if it'll be eight games, but that seems within the realm of possibility.

If I were the Jets, I'd explore trade possibilities, if only to gauge the market. Richardson is a terrific talent, one of the top, young defensive linemen in the game, but he has a checkered record and he will difficult to re-sign when his contract expires after the 2016 season -- or after '17, assuming they exercise the fifth-year option. Based on Mike Maccagnan's comments the other day, Richardson still isn't back in the organization's good graces. He's taking positive steps, but he's not there yet.

Richardson has a higher ceiling than Muhammad Wilkerson, and he's a better fit in Todd Bowles' one-gap scheme because he's an explosive, up-the-field penetrator. But (and this is key) he's a bigger risk than Wilkerson because of his off-the-field baggage. If I had to pick between the two, right now, I'd pick Wilkerson and deal Richardson, but only if I could get a first-round pick in return. They could try to trade Wilkerson, but it's extremely difficult to move someone with the franchise tag. We're assuming, of course, he will be tagged after the season. Bet on it.

In the end, my hunch is that both players will be back in 2016, along with Leonard Williams, but maybe not nose tackle Damon Harrison (a free agent). They'd have approximately $23.4 million in cap dollars committed to Wilkerson, Richardson and Williams, but it would be palatable for a year. That would buy them another year to sort it out and maintain an excellent defensive line. But like I said, if someone calls and asks about Richardson, I'm listening.

What's your opinion?

If we can trade him for a first and then package our first for a top pick for a qb, I would do it.

Otherwise hang on to him. He's by far the best lineman we have and he impacts games. If we can get a passrusher next to him to attack the QB from the edge then we can wreak havoc as long as he's healthy

Also, I doubt he gets suspended. Only charge on him is speeding which is a Shane if he gets suspended for that

The real problem with Richardson is the fact tha the next time he pee's bad, it's 10 games. It's awful hard to make a major commitment to a player with that hanging over his head forever.

has he learned his lesson? I'm not so sure.

This is what I would do. I would deal him, but only if the return allows for a package to deal up for one of the top QBs.

Not me I trade this firecracker in a heartbeat for 2-3. he is one step away form 1 year suspension... get rid of him and sign Wik, he is a better all around player IMHO.

How the hell is that not PI? That was brutal. He had his BACK TO THE BALL! Arms up, jumping, back to the throw, leaping into the receiver. How is that not PI?

But hey, they got the holding call.

Richardson is a good Player, but is his bad issues worth the risk? Richardson judgement isnt smart, he cant decide which is better between smoking dope or making millions playing football. Richardson should make his millions & be the best he can. After his football career he can smoke, drink & do whatever he wants in his mansion. Richardson isnt smart & causes a lot of trouble also by flapping his lips. Richardson comments about Wilks contract causes trouble. He is all about the big money contract first but then drives around smoking dope driving a 130 mph out running cops with a gun & minor in car....that says it all. Richardson is high risk vs reward & not sure he will be on the field for Jets when needed. His current injury is from his suspension & not being in shape. I just hate to see Richardson waste his talent & opportunity to possibly be a great Jets Player & make millions doing so. But right now thats what he is doing.
