Thoughts on his career so far? I feel like he's always a step late but when he gets to the qb he puts a hurting in them.

It'll be interesting to see what our next Head Coach does with him. Not sure if lb is a natural position for him.

He's not a linebacker, like some others I have always preferred a 4-3 Defense.

Might just as well play out his final year and see if he finally blossoms. He did get better this year, or at least it seemed like it.

I really like what he is bringing. He does a great job setting the edge in run defense, and he got to the quarterback multiple times today. I didn't love the pick when we made it but I have to give him a ton of credit for having to learn a new position and playing it quite well.

Even with his hands in the dirt he is inconsistent. I hope being our new HC is all business , this sparks his play.

Underachiever.

Good Player who occasionally makes jaw-dropping impact plays, but he has all of the tools to consistently dominate.

It can still happen for him, but I get the feeling he's content to be a "good player" and get paid well. The dominant players usually have all of the physical tools to be great, as Coples does, but they also have a burning desire to be great, even if its their own ego that motivates them, but Coples is a laid-back guy who doesn't strike me as having a real passion for the game, I get the feeling he's content to be good. I hope Bowles can change that about him, but its hard to change a persons nature, this was the knock on him coming out of college too.

That said, he's still one of the best players on the team just on talent alone, he's still one of the few guys on defense who can "wreck the game" and occasionally he does make impact plays, so I'd like to keep him.

Coples was the square peg in Ryan's round hole. Hard to accurately evaluate him, because he was all over the place in Ryan's defense. At one point he is rushing the passes , the next he is playing bump and run on the perimeter with the opposing team's WRs. Rex screwed this guy.

Unless he loses 30 more pounds and learns how to truly play the LB position, we're waisting his talent. Otherwise; we need to be playing the 4-3 to get the most out of his talent.

I agree. And I think he'll be the closest watched player on the team in a contract option year for him. This new regime has zero allegiance to him and if he continues his disappearing act, he'll be gone. Maybe Rex would entertain a trade?
If IK is getting snaps at his position, we'll that answer right away. I do believe that another OLB will be acquired this offseason. Pace must be viewed strictly as a backup.

I think Rex was the main reason for his disappearing act. I believe Bowles will find better ways to use his skills. On a side note I do like IK and also have faith he will be used well.

Have to agree. When Rex is your coach, whatever your particular skill set happens to be is ignored in order to squeeze, wedge and hacksaw you into one of the 11 preset and unchangeable fixed positions of his father's 1980s defense.

OK, Q...you are now an outside 46 defense linebacker

You, Prior...you are a 46 defense safety

You, Allen...you're now a very slow CB, a position you never played

Your skills don't fit....no problem..change them all .

Change Pop's defense to fit current player skills?? Impossible and all that stuff!

Hopefully we now have a head coach and DC who will do the impossible and tailor his defense to fit his players...

TBT, I was thrilled when they drafted him in 2012, to date he has not performed up to my expectations. I'm interested to see if he plays better in Bowles's defense.

I actually think that IK will turn into a serviceable player. Not the biggest or fastest but made plays when he was 'allowed' to play by Ryan. He seemed to have that sixth sense and a relentless motor. Definitely an option for us as an OLB in the 3-4. Back to Coples, I believe that he will blossom with this next coaching staff. Just a hunch, but they will see the film and in what position he excels and go with it.

this rex used him wrong but he is young enough a new regime can fix him.

I think most of you are too optimistic towards Coples. He first played DE with little success and now a little more than a year at OLB with a new playing weight and promise towards his newly developed quickness gained through an offseason of drills and still, nothing. I don't think he has it. And I disagree that Rex mis-used him. He just hasn't shown up in 3 years. And I wouldn't expect a miracle but if it did happen, I'd still be suspicious since it's a contract year. Can you tell I'm not high on Coples? I was on draft day and every warning about him seems to have been true. Lazy. Unmotivated.

I'm ready to move on from him.
