A promising season for Dolphins wide receiver Mike Wallace ended on an ugly note in Sunday's 37-24 loss to the New York Jets.

After Wallace sat out the second half, multiple reports noted that Wallace had been benched by the coaching staff. NFL Media's Jeff Darlington, though, was told by several team sources that the pass-catcher wasn't just "benched," but pulled himself from the contest.

After Dolphins tight end Charles Clay scored a touchdown with 43 seconds left in the half, Wallace came off the field and told coach Joe Philbin that he no longer wanted to play, per Darlington.

NFL Media's Albert Breer was initially told by a pair of Dolphins coaches that Wallace was pulled for what the team viewed as an attitude problem. Wallace only added to the weirdness by having fellow wideout Brandon Gibson stand at his locker after the game to answer questions from reporters on his behalf.

Wallace has thrived in play-caller Bill Lazor's offense to the tune of 62 catches for 862 yards and 10 touchdowns. He struggled at times to mesh with quarterback Ryan Tannehill, but that falls more on the passer's hot-and-cold deep ball.

Due $9.85 million next season as part of a five-year, $60 million contract that runs through 2017, Wallace and Miami need to work out their issues this offseason, especially with Dolphins owner Stephen Ross promising last week that Philbin would return in 2015.

Darlington said it best in summing up Sunday's stinkbomb in South Beach:

What a bizarre story. What is wrong with some of the WR's?

Wallace is a super talented player. I don't know how the Fish can go into next season with him on the roster. Doubt any one will trade for his contract.

If he is a FA wold you bring him in?

This story gets more interesting also. I remember reading that another WR of their team thinks that Wallace actually was benched but that he thinks Philbin released this story.

I'll find it. Maybe I am misremembering the story. But it doesn't seem like Philbin is well liked over there in South Beach!

As for bringing in Wallace? Not for his contract and only if Harvin is gone. Harvin is tougher and is more than a deep threat. Wallace to me is only a deep threat. Horrible contract they gave him

Disagree on Harvin. Harvin has never shown that he is a true #1 WR. He has always been a gadget player. The Sea Hawks tried to make him a WR also. Very poor route runner, and can't stay healthy.

As weird as this story is Harvin is much more of a locker room cancer. Really don't want the guy back

I'd really like to avoid the Wallaces and Gordons next season. First year of a rebuild isn't the time to bring in WR headcases. You add them when you're a player or two away (like Braylon/Santonio). If I was going to target a vet WR this offseason I'd throw a barrel of money at a guy like Randall Cobb who's looking for his first big payday even though prying him out of GB is a longshot. Still, he's the kind of WR I'd want to add now.

If you really want to dream big, the Cowboys have very little cap room and both Dez Bryant and Demarco Murray to sign. Bryant would be a nice get.

Agree

Problem is good teams don't want to give up well balanced super stars unless there is some kind of personal problem. So many WR's for some reason are head cases.

I think that is why I prefer Harvin over Wallace, the fact that he is a gadget player. Wallace is just a deep threat and I do not think he is that good at it. Harvin has been on great behavior with the Jets. I think he knows that if he blows his chance with this team, then his dream of getting paid is gone. Harvin makes great catches over the middle, can run it and is tough. He is injury prone though. Nevertheless, he is hard to game plan for. A good offensive coordinator will find ways to make it work. He is deadly with the ball in open space. He is probably not worth the 10 million but I'd want him back in heartbeat if he restructures.

What do you think of Harvin's 2011 season? 87 catches for 967 yards. Fluke? I think he can replicate it here again if we have the proper play calls.

nycdan - Dez will be great but he is another headcase screaming and yelling at his QB on the sidelines every game.

Well here's their career stats from 2009-2014

Harvin Rec -332 Yards- 3802 Ave -11.5 TD's- 21

Wallace Rec 375 Yards-5834 Ave-15.6 TD's -47

Things that stand out are Ave and TD's

Harvin may have behaved himself for 7 games here, but I really doubt it will continue in the future. With his production, it's incredible he has been booted from 2 teams in this age of Diva WR's. BTW he has already stated that he will not take a pay cut.

Wallace just has the better production. Is a good route runner which Harvin isn't, and is a true #1 WR and would match up well with Decker as the possession receiver. As of right now, he hasn't been kicked off any teams. That's likely to change shortly.

Harvin is definitely better at punching out team mates. Not saying I want either of them, but if they are both FA's next year, which is likely and I'm desperate for a WR it would be Wallace
