Former Don Bosco star Matt Simms will be staying with the Jets.
The team announced Tuesday that Simms has renegotiated his contract with the team and thus will not be an exclusive rights free agent this off-season. Exclusive rights free agents cannot negotiate with other teams unless they are not offered a contract by their current one.
Simms, who played in one game for the Jets last season, has spent 24 games on the active roster but played in only four, backing up Geno Smith in 2013 and Smith and Michael Vick this season. Simms likely again will be competing for the No. 3 spot in 2015. Vick isn’t under contract to the Jets in 2015 and the team will bring in someone to compete with Smith.
Simms, a Franklin Lakes native, has yet to start a game during his career with the Jets and began the 2014 season on the practice squad before being elevated to the active roster Nov. 1.
