Former Don Bosco star Matt Simms will be staying with the Jets.

The team announced Tuesday that Simms has renegotiated his contract with the team and thus will not be an exclusive rights free agent this off-season. Exclusive rights free agents cannot negotiate with other teams unless they are not offered a contract by their current one.

Simms, who played in one game for the Jets last season, has spent 24 games on the active roster but played in only four, backing up Geno Smith in 2013 and Smith and Michael Vick this season. Simms likely again will be competing for the No. 3 spot in 2015. Vick isn’t under contract to the Jets in 2015 and the team will bring in someone to compete with Smith.

Simms, a Franklin Lakes native, has yet to start a game during his career with the Jets and began the 2014 season on the practice squad before being elevated to the active roster Nov. 1.

would be nice if they let him compete in TC and pre-season.

I like the improvement I have seen in Simms over the last few years. Even though we haven't seen that much of him in games.

He was awful in college, but had a cannon for an arm. The few times we have seen him in pre season, I've been impressed. Hopefully he makes a quantum leap in camp this season with a good OC. This camp will probably be his last chance

I agree maybe that is why he decided to resign here because rex and idzik are gone and he is hoping the new guys give him a chance.

I don't think it has anything to do with Rex. If I was him I'd love Rex, Rex gave him a chance when nobody else would. Like I said he was awful at Tenn. When he first signed, I thought it was a joke, or just a favor to Phil. His play has really improved. Somebody was doing something right.

I'm a fan of Matt Simms. He's more consistent than Geno. He deserves a legit chance in 2015.

Worth a shot. Maybe with WRECKS not deciding his starting QB in March, Quinn and his new OC will even give him s fair chance to compete

I agree. He definitely needs some work but he could be good with the right coaching.

Think Simms will be caught in a numbers game. Smith will almost certainly make the team. More then likely they will bring a vet in. Hopefully they will also draft a QB. That's 3. IMO the only way Simms can make the team is he has to have an incredible camp and squeeze Smith out.

With as many QB's as they are going to have in camp don't think Simms is going to get the reps that are required to knock Smith off the roster.

LOL the way things go for the Jets he'll probably go to Buffalo with Rex and become a star

I hope he beats Smith out. Other than his few good games I cant respect Geno right now. I dont feel as though he's fully dedicated to the team. I also believe that Geno was a productos of Idzik, not Rex. I could be wrong but I sensed tension between Rex and Geno at times.
