Jets rebuffed by first GM candidate: Vikings’ George Paton
By Brian CostelloDecember 31, 2014 | 1:08pm

This is the second time in three years Paton has turned the Jets down. He also declined to interview with the Bears, according to Bleacher Report. Paton has a history of turning down teams.

It sounds like Paton’s decision had less to do with the Jets — who are looking to replace John Idzik after a 4-12 season — and more to do with his happiness with the Vikings. A source who knows Paton well said he has a solid situation in Minnesota and is not interested in leaving at the moment.

The NYC media is such a pack of jackals.

The headline is such BS "Jets rebuffed by First GM Candidate". He's not taking interviews with any one. Probably as DeCosta won't either. The Jets weren't rebuffed.

As much as I thought that Idzik had to go, what Mehta did during the campaign was really over the top. I don't think the fact that Idzik was fired after only two years bothers candidates, they knew he was incompetent, but the way the press savaged him has got to be concerning to them.

This is why we can never have nice things

Why doesn't DeCosta come here? I know that he is the next in line in Baltimore but Ozzie Newsome (sp?) is young and probably won't be going anywhere. The situation in NY is much much better. Throw all the money in the bank for DeCosta.

Jets have interviews scheduled with 5 general manager targets, waiting on Ravens' Eric DeCosta

on December 31, 2014 at 1:07 PM, updated December 31, 2014 at 1:39 PM

Yes, Minnesota Vikings assistant general manager George Paton has declined to interview with the Jets for their GM vacancy.

But there are a few other guys who might want the job. Five, to be exact.

In-house candidate Rod Graves is interviewing Wednesday.

The following four executives also have interviews set up with the Jets, though the dates of all these interviews remain unclear:

• Seahawks pro personnel director Trent Kirchner (interviewing this weekend)
• Texans college scouting director Mike Maccagnan
• Eagles pro personnel director Rick Mueller
• Browns executive chief of staff Bill Kuharich

The Jets are still waiting to hear back from Ravens assistant general manager Eric DeCosta, who has turned down numerous GM job overtures in recent years, including an interview offer from the Jets in 2013, when they hired John Idzik.

If you're scoring along at home, here's our handy, frequently updated list of the Jets' GM and head coach targets, including which candidates have agreed to be interviewed.

DeCosta seems to be the biggest fish out there for the Jets, now that Paton is out of the mix. Aaron Wilson of The Baltimore Sun has some interesting details about what makes DeCosta so difficult for teams to lure away from the Ravens.

It's mainly that he is the team's general manager in waiting, for when Ozzie Newsome retires. DeCosta has been the assistant GM since 2012. He makes GM-level money, too.

Here's Wilson:

DeCosta is annually a top target of NFL teams seeking a new personnel boss, but has been hesitant to leave the Ravens due to his strong position here.
DeCosta has a lucrative contract that compensates him at a level commensurate with NFL general manager and has strong family ties in Baltimore.

Two years ago, DeCosta issued a statement through the team saying he had no plans to leave the organization.

"I love being a part of the Ravens and plan to stay here and help them win championships," DeCosta said in a statement. "I have no intentions of leaving this team."

So while DeCosta might just go the same route as Paton, and decline the Jets' interview offer (as both men have made a practice of doing, with several offers), the Jets still have some options available for GM candidates.

Guess money won't be one way to lure him over here. Hope he thinks about what he can do with all the cap space and top 10 pick.

The only guys that excite me on that list is Kirchner, and DeCosta.

Interesting that DeCosta hasn't declined quickly the way that Paton did. Could mean a couple of things.

1) He is trying to get more money out of Ozzie

2) He is trying to convince his wife that Jets fans won't beat their 3 children up if the Jets don't go to the Super Bowl this year. By the accounts I have read they have 3 kids all under 10, and his wife doesn't want to uproot them. Strong argument for a guy who is very well paid, loves his boss, loves his job, and highly respected and thought of in the community he has lived in for 20 years.

3) He is considering it, but wants to discuss it with Ozzie and his wife. i guess that's really 1 and 2.

I'm expecting a refusal some time during the day.

If he agrees, Woody has to throw the check book at him. Highest paid GM in the NFL is what might motivate him to uproot his family. Promish him he won't have to talk to Mehta. Take one of his children hostage.

Just don't let him out of the building with out a contract

The more I read about DeCosta the harder I think that it will be to pry him away from the Ravens. He's been with them for over 18 years. Started at an entry level position and slowly graduated into a position where he has some say. From the Raven's site:

Eric DeCosta has been a part of the Ravens organization since the beginning. A graduate of the Ravens’ “20/20 Club” (includes members of the team’s personnel staff who started with the Ravens as young assistants and grew into evaluators with more input), DeCosta joined the franchise in an entry-level position in 1996. He moved up the personnel ranks, first as an area scout, then as director of college scouting (six years) and director of player personnel (three years) before his most recent promotion to assistant general manager (2012). DeCosta assists GM Ozzie Newsome in overseeing both the college scouting and pro personnel departments. The Taunton, MA, native was honored in 2005 by The Sporting News as one of the top young stars in sports and was selected to both the 2008 Baltimore Business Journal and Baltimore Magazine “40 Under 40” group. He also served on the eight-member committee to interview and select Ravens head coach John Harbaugh in 2008.

During DeCosta’s tenure as scouting director, the Ravens drafted Pro Bowlers OLB Terrell Suggs (’03), DT Haloti Ngata (’06), G Ben Grubbs (’07), FB Le’Ron McClain (’07), G Marshal Yanda (‘07) and RB Ray Rice (‘08) and a number of other key contributors, including OLB Jarret Johnson (’03), C Jason Brown (’05) and Super Bowl XLVII MVP QB Joe Flacco (’08).
