Lee lowest graded rookie linebacker (according to PFF)

From article reviewing all first round picks from this year's draft:

20. Darron Lee, LB, Jets (Ohio State)
Snaps: 593

PFF overall grade: 38.8

Darron Lee has all the athleticism and measurables in the world, but it’s looking less and less likely that there is a football player operating the controls. He is the lowest-graded rookie linebacker in the league and has allowed a passer rating of 132.9 when thrown at in coverage. In fact, the only area PFF measures that Lee has graded well in is discipline, thanks to just two penalties on the season.

The reason for only two penalties is obvious. You have to get close to the offensive player to foul him.

The physical tools are there but not the mental.
I knew they should have drafted a player from an institution of higher learning.

MainJet must be smiling now!!!

No, I'm actually very sad. This essentially proves that Lee was a complete waste of the 20th overall. The Jets could have gotten 66 tackles and 1 sack from a guy through FA making the league minimum. No one should be talking up Mac making stupid picks like Lee.

Add him to the long list of wasted 1st round picks.

Add him to the long list of Jet defenders who are having terrible years in 2016. This has been an epic collapse by a defense that was good enough last year to be top 10 in the league, and this year garbage. No surprise that a rookie would be caught in the same toilet bowl whirlpool.

Lee will be better this year. This entire defense was horrendous all season. I expect a bounce back season. He might be misused though bc he is not a middle linebacker in this defense

I think from the beginning Wilkerson wasn't mentally ready to come back full force and because of that the breakdown on defense started up front... It may looked like he wasn't giving effort but more so wasn't confident on how his ankle/leg would hold up... It takes one player to screw up an entire game plan... Put in the fact that our secondary was led by a sluggish overweight veteran (still don't understand how a wrist surgery allowed him to come in this year out of shape), but put this two things together and we never stood chance...

Marcus Gilchrist was our best cover safety, Marcus Williams was our best cover corner but by themselves they were made irrelevant... Depth was young and inexperienced which made it easier for our team to suffer... I believe from what we witnessed that Lee struggled at times because of the non-football injury status of Erin Henderson, Darron was forced into the starting lineup way too early... Still believe he will be okay not great but okay as an inside linebacker... But like they say with a quarterback the only true test to see what they got is to play them and he has plenty of tape to review this off season... Was he the best he could be, not behind that defensive line... Like I said with Wilk mentally incapable of giving his full 100% made the development of Lee nearly next to impossible... Darron Lee is our version of a safety playing linebacker like the Cardinals and Rams currently are doing in the NFC West...

This off season is crucial, if we intend to make the full switch to a 4-3 base defense we now actually have more pieces in place to do so... But I fear that TB will continue to stick to what he knows even tho, the best option isn't the one he is used too...

Well, Mo may have sucked this season, but Williams has more than made up for him. So it's not like Lee doesn't have anything in front of him. He has a pro bowler in front of him.

The jury is in on Lee playing inside. The jury says he sucks inside and will never be cut out to play inside.

need more than one in front to allow him to play sideline to sideline...

there was no consistency outside Leonard Williams... opponents were able to evade because the defensive line was so unproductive...

Richardson decided when he was going to turn it on, and it wasn't often... the defense only goes when all levels work together and when two of the three units are struggling the other unit will struggle as well... food for thought the two middle linebackers Harris & Lee led the team in total tackles, which actually says Lee even tho ranked by PFF as bad was one of the bright spots in our horrible defense...

We could have gotten 66 tackles and 1 sack from a FA making the league minimum.

We have no say in this, he will get more chances. I just think the specific pick of Lee e as:

1) A total misallocation and waste of the equity in the pick.

2) Lee did nothing to help the Jets win in 2016, when we needed an immediate contributor.

I agree, you Draft a small LB based solely on speed knowing his speed wont be there after bulking up 40 lbs needed to go against big fast NFL O Linemen. Stupidity dart board Drafting & reminds me of another 1st rd Linebacker/DE Vernon Gholston during Mangini days that never made it.

Bruce Carter (got outplayed by the rookie)
Julian Stanford (IR)

nowadays middle linebackers aren't solely 6'3" 250 lbs they are smaller and quicker look at the Cardinals and Rams who have outstanding defensive units who are boggled by their offensive counter parts...

we are just screwed with lack of depth on the o-line and youth throughout with little to no experience...

That's not necessarily a good thing? Just because a few teams have had limited success using a unique blitzing scheme leaving a tiny linebacker unlocked, does not cover up the facts. The fact is, offenses figure out blitzing schemes and when they do, the only that will work is simply beating the guy in front of you. Darron Lee has never done that and at his size he never will. That's just common sense. If you have an athletic 300 pound man take on an athletic 225 pound boy, we all know who's going to win.

Besides, Todd Bowles schemes suck. So how he's going to ever Darron Lee unblocked and heading straight for the QB, I will never know.

Too early to write Lee off. I like his speed and athleticism. Lets see how he progresses next season.
