As long as he doesn't bring Lindley I'm pretty fired up about Bowles. For him Geno is a hall of fame QB compared to Lindley.

I can't find one person that doesn't like this hire for us. Some don't like the choice for Bowles. I'm pretty pumped about this hire.

Yeah I'm pumped as well. Bowles is totally different in his character from Rex but a defensive genius as well. I just hope in cares more about the offense and his QBs and has a eye for that side of the ball as well. I'm also hoping he is much much much better at game and time management situations. Rex was horrible at that. I'm told he is a no nonsense kind of guy and all about accountability, yet players still love to play for him. Amazing isn't it!

Seems like we are going to keep the 3-4 as our defensive philosophy but actually be a bit more blitz-happy. Bowles blitzed 20% more than Rex in 2014. I am sure Rex would have blitzed more if he had a secondary but still 20% is a fair amount.

Mehta is digging deep to find some bad info. I bet he goes as far as speaking to Bowles' ex-girlfriends to get some dirt.

After six years of Rex Ryan's bluster, the New York Jets decided to turn down the volume, announcing Wednesday the hiring of Todd Bowles -- a longtime assistant whose quiet leadership impressed team officials.

The former Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator signed his contract, a four-year deal that averages slightly more than $4 million annually, sources said.

More from ESPN.com

Woody Johnson wants to change the environment around the Jets, and he believes Todd Bowles will bring a steadiness that was lacking -- and maybe a little tough love, Rich Cimini writes. Story

Cimini: Maccagnan a mystery man with questions

"It's an honor and privilege to coach the Jets," Bowles said. " ... I can't help but be humbled by the chance to coach this team. I'm going to do everything I can to build a consistent winner."

The Jets paired Bowles with new general manager Mike Maccagnan, who was officially hired Tuesday afternoon -- about four hours before the Bowles news leaked.

Bowles and Maccagnan, who had no previous experience together, spent more than two hours in a private meeting Tuesday, getting acquainted.

Maccagnan was so eager to meet Bowles that he accompanied a driver to the airport and greeted him as soon as he landed.

A similar scene played out 25 years ago, when Bowles -- a player for the Washington Redskins -- was picked up at the airport by Maccagnan, a team intern.

"When we first met, it was immediately clear how sincere and very real he is," Maccagnan said. "While he appreciates the need for discipline, players love playing for him, and I believe he has outstanding qualities to help make the Jets a competitive, winning team."

Owner Woody Johnson, who led concurrent searches for a coach and GM, said he's "confident" that Bowles and Maccagnan "are the right combination to lead this team."

Johnson fired Ryan and GM John Idzik after a 4-12 season, the Jets' fourth straight year out of the playoffs.

AP Photo/Kevin TerrellTodd Bowles comes to the Jets after serving as Arizona's defensive coordinator. The Cards rode their D in 2014 to an 11-5 mark and a wild-card berth.

"I couldn't be happier for Todd," Cards coach Bruce Arians said. "The Jets got themselves a tremendous coach and a better person. We're sorry as hell to lose him but we all knew this day was coming, especially with the job he did here the last two years.

"Todd and I go back more than 30 years. He was one of my captains at Temple and it was obvious then how special he was. His passion for the game and intelligence are as high as anyone I've ever been around. Todd's been ready for this for a long time and I'm ecstatic for him to finally get the opportunity."

Bowles already is lining up his staff. His offensive coordinator will be former Buffalo Bills and Dallas Cowboys coach Chan Gailey, according to sources.

Gailey, 63, who spent the last two seasons out of football, inherits a turnover-prone quarterback (Geno Smith) and a unit that finished 25th and 22nd in total offense over the last two seasons.

Sources said the new defensive coordinator will be Miami Dolphins defensive-line coach Kacy Rodgers, who worked with Bowles in Dallas and Miami.

The Jets picked Bowles over five others that interviewed for the position. They seemed to be leaning toward Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, but they couldn't get a firm read on whether he'd accept an offer -- and they didn't want to wait to find out.

That, coupled with the Atlanta Falcons' keen interest in Bowles, prompted them to move swiftly.

Jets officials were impressed by Bowles in his first interview, Jan. 7, and they invited him back for a second so he could meet with Maccagnan.

When rating the candidates, the Jets gave Bowles high marks for his understated leadership and ability to hire a strong staff. While they consider him a player's coach, they also believe he won't hesitate to discipline players. That's noteworthy because there was a feeling that Ryan was too soft on the players.

"One of the smartest defensive minds in the NFL and a coach who really got the most out of his players," said Cards nose tackle Dan Williams of Bowles.

This is a homecoming for Bowles, 51, who grew up in Elizabeth, New Jersey -- about 30 minutes from the Jets' training facility. The Jets offered him his first NFL coaching job, in 2000, as the secondary coach. Then-coach Al Groh was responsible for hiring Bowles, who made an impression on Bill Parcells, the head of the Jets' football operation.

Parcells wound up bringing Bowles with him to the Cowboys and Dolphins to be part of those coaching staffs.

"I have a high regard for Todd," Parcells said by phone. "I think he's a very experienced coach now. He has a lot of experience coaching in different situations. He was a heady player, having coached against him. I've had direct contact with him in several difference places as a coach. He's a highly intelligent guy and I think he's ready."

Bowles had a strong ally in former Redskins GM Charley Casserly, who, along with former longtime GM Ron Wolf, served as consultants during the searches.

Casserly described Bowles as "an excellent football coach. ... He does a good job of relating to players and they want to play for him."

Wolf said he liked Bowles' presentation during the interview, his knowledge of the Jets' roster and the entire AFC East, adding that "his thoughts on making a team better were all tremendous."

Great article on ganggreennation on Bowles and his coaching philosophy:

We finally have a head coach in place, and the more I read about him, the more I like the hire.

I wanted to learn more about New York Jets HC Todd Bowles, not necessarily the defense he runs, as Scott outlined that very well in his recent article, but more his philosophy as a coach and as a person.

As I was reading, I picked out several quotes that give you an insight into the kind of coach and person Todd Bowles is. All these quotes are taken from articles dating back the last year or two.

When asked about facing his old team the Philadelphia Eagles:

"I've been on the front page, good and bad," Bowles said. "It's a players' game. I love the Xs and Os part of it. I love the scheming, I love teaching. But it's a players' game. They are out there working and they should get all the credit. My satisfaction is seeing them succeed. They deserve that because they do all the blood, sweat and tears."

When asked about the trouble he experienced inheriting the Eagles defense:

"If a player has a bad year they work hard to come back, and it's no different for a coach," Bowles said. "No matter what the situation is, you think as a coach you are good enough to turn anything around. We didn't get it done, I didn't get it done, the players didn't get it done, the staff didn't get it done. That's all it was."

On his coaching style:

"They will tell you that I snap," Bowles said with another laugh. "I'm not a yeller or screamer, but if you tick me off enough ... there are certain things that bother me that I can't tolerate. Like going over something 50 million of times and when you walk on the field and I just told you something and you go out there and forget it, I have a major problem and we are going to have a chat."

Calais Campbell on Todd:

"People had a lot of bad things to say about Todd because of the (Philadelphia) situation last year," Campbell said. "I think he showed what he can do with us. He puts us in the best position, makes our job easy for us. He's a genius. The second halves of games, the adjustments he makes, no one has been able to figure it out."

Dockett on Todd's Coaching Style:

"Todd is more about putting his players in place to make plays, he's not basing a defense around a certain scheme," defensive end Darnell Dockett said. "He'll sit down and ask questions like, ‘Are you good at this?' ‘Can you do this?'

Bowles on the importance of turnovers:

"Turnovers limit offensive possessions and turnovers gets your offense the ball back as soon as possible, and turnovers change games," Bowles said. "Stopping somebody is great, but if we can emphasize turnovers and get the ball back as much as possible, that's more damaging to an offensive team than anything else.

"There are a lot of teams that finish in the top five in defense and still aren't very good in turnovers. Turnovers are the key to winning ballgames."

"I think it is beneficial to us because he puts his trust in us and believes in what we are capable of doing. We just want to make him look good at what we are doing."

On changing the scheme:

"We have 4-3 guys and we do play 4-3 during the ballgame," Bowles said. "We don't stay in just 3-4. It's a matter of having the right people outside doing the right things at the right times. Some of those (linebackers) are inside guys that can't play outside.

"(The scheme) will be mixed up a little bit more."

On mid-game adjustments

"He came in at halftime and said, ‘You know, we are going to tighten our coverage up and bring pressure and we are going to make them beat us over the top,' " safety Rashad Johnson

"That shows the kind of confidence he has in the secondary that he said tighten up because we're not going to let them dink and dunk us the rest of the game.

"It's just the confidence level he has in us and the trust we have in the plays he's calling. They had two good drives but we have such a mature group, we didn't even blink. We knew we would figure out what they were doing to us."

There’s a chess match before the game, during the game, and at halftime," Bowles said. "We made some minor adjustments. We just made more plays than they did. In the first half they made more plays than we did."

That’s simplifying it a bit too much, however. "He doesn’t do a lot of yelling and screaming like a typical coach," defensive end Frostee Rucker said. "He’s an educator. They always say it trickles down, and the captain, the quarterback of our defense, is Todd. "He can dial the game up and make sure we are technically sound, and before you know it, we’re right where we need to be."

On Blitzing

"They consider five people going a blitz these days," defensive end Calais Campbell said. "I don't consider that a blitz. I don't think Todd considers that a blitz. That's just our ‘under saw' type of look. As far as actual blitzes go, we mix them up a lot. Bring a lot of different guys. To me, five is just a five-man rush."

"(The blitzing) hasn't been as effective as I thought," Bowles said. "Some of them work out well, some don't. You see things, you try to take advantage. You try to put guys in position to make plays."

Do you play to win the game?

"You've got to play for the win or you play for the loss," Bowles said. "We were playing for the win."

The Jet defenses, the last two seasons under the coaching of the self promoting self acclaimed defense genius had UNDER 15 takeaways each seaslon, the worst two seasons in Jet history. Worse than Winner, Holtz, Walton, Coslet, Edwards, Mangini and YES even Kotite.

Of course, it was everyone but the head coach's fault and yesterday the fraud boasted that he was disappointed that Schwartz's 2014 defense was only.4th best

We should be thrilled beyond compare that the fraud and his seven coaching dwarfs has left the building and will be fouling up the Bills and that we appear to have a new HC that actually understands 2015 NFL defense vs some sort of 1970s version his Dad taught him

Cardinals praise former leader Todd Bowles

In the same breath, Calais Campbell detailed what the Jets have gained and everything his Cardinals have lost.

Todd Bowles wasn't only their defensive coordinator. He was their leader, both on and off the field, an emotional rock and an occasional jokester. He also was a little brother to coach Bruce Arians.

"It's bittersweet,'' Cardinals defensive end Campbell said by phone from Phoenix on Wednesday, hours before the Jets officially named Bowles their coach.

"For him to get a promotion and become a head coach, I think he'll be very good at it. "But definitely as a player it [stinks], because I know how good we can be with him here. We definitely have a big void to fill.''

Campbell insisted, in his deep, throaty voice, that the Jets made the right call.

 JetsHistory of Jets coaches

"Oh, 100 percent,'' he said. "I wouldn't be surprised if he was very successful right away. The Jets are in very good hands.''

Owner Woody Johnson and general manager Mike Maccagnan -- who was officially hired Tuesday -- got a clear sense of Bowles' work ethic, attention to detail and demeanor in the course of his interviews, each lasting several hours. In that time, the Jets saw everything the Cardinals had come to admire during the past two seasons.

"That's a great hire,'' Arizona cornerback Antonio Cromartie, a former Jet, wrote in a text message shortly after news of Bowles' agreement to join the Jets broke late Tuesday night.

On Wednesday, Cromartie said on SiriusXM NFL Radio: "I'm very happy for Todd Bowles. He is the most head coach-ready of an assistant I've been around.''

Supportive tweets and encouraging words flooded social media in the aftermath of the Jets' head-coaching announcement. Campbell's words made it easy to see why.

"Todd's one of the most passionate football coaches I know,'' said Campbell, who earned his first Pro Bowl nod this season.

Jets center Nick Mangold met Bowles briefly at the Jets' facility in Florham Park, New Jersey, on Wednesday and said his coach's enthusiasm was palpable.

"You could tell right away, just from 'Hi' and 'How ya doing,' his passion for the game, his intensity,'' Mangold said Thursday on WFAN. "I'm excited to play for him.''

Bowles' arrival also means a new coaching staff for the Jets. They're expected to name Dolphins defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers as defensive coordinator and bring in Chan Gailey to run the offense. Gailey will be the fourth Jets offensive coordinator in the past 10 seasons, but Mangold embraces the change.

"I've heard great things about getting the ball out, spreading it around,'' he said of Gailey. " . . . So getting to see how Chan views offense and how he attacks defenses, it just kind of gets me giddy.''

Bowles wants to add Falcons special teams coordinator Keith Armstrong, but they denied the Jets' request to interview him. There's still a good chance that Armstrong can join the Jets once the Falcons hire a head coach.

Campbell, a first-year captain, credited Bowles with helping him grow as a leader and for dialing up blitzes that aided his 16 sacks the past two seasons.

Bowles -- who was named the Pro Football Writers Association's assistant coach of the year on Thursday -- may be soft-spoken and reserved, "but he's fiery when he needs to be,'' Campbell said.

So does that mean there's a chance Jets fans could get a Super Bowl guarantee (a la Rex Ryan) during Bowles' introductory news conference next week?

"Oh, nah,'' Campbell said, laughing, "that's something you won't get.''
