Skrine on Jets' offseason: 'Ain't no rebuilding' in New York

You may think the New York Jets are rebuilding, but cornerback Buster Skrine disagrees.

"You can't rebuild in New York," Skrine told ESPN.

Why not?

"Because y'all will eat us up," he said with a smile, alluding to the media. "Ain't no rebuilding here. It's getting right to the point. This is a competing team. We still have the players to compete."

Skrine became the first holdover to comment publicly on the Jets' dramatic roster shakeup. In case you've been snoozing, they said goodbye to household names such as Darrelle Revis, Nick Mangold and Brandon Marshall, among others, replacing them with younger, cheaper and less established players.

Coach Todd Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan have provided their take on the offseason strategy, but those who survived the Great Roster Purge have remained quiet. ESPN caught up with Skrine last weekend at a charity event in Manhattan.

Skrine said he hasn't been surprised by anything.

"I'm going into my seventh year and I played for Cleveland, so I've seen it happen," he said. "Sometimes you have to figure out the right formula for the team, and I trust Coach Bowles. Every morning, he's up at 4:30. I trust Maccagnan. I trust everybody. I know they've got something up their sleeve. They're going to make it work.

"At the end of the year, Bowles said, 'I'm not going to let y'all down this year. We're going to make it work. We're going to come in and I know things are going to change.' I know, going into next season, it's going to be a different atmosphere. I'm looking forward to it."

Skrine didn't want to dwell on last season's 5-11 disaster, except to say, "It didn't click like we wanted it to." There were well-documented chemistry and disciplinary issues, casting the Jets as a dysfunctional team.

Without getting into specifics, Skrine suggested the morale will be better now that the locker room chemistry has been altered. He expects Bowles to set the tone April 17, the start of the offseason program.

"I know Coach Bowles, when he says something, he means it," Skrine said. "We'll probably be one of the most organized teams in the league. We're a young team. When you have a younger team, you can tailor your team exactly how you want it to be. I think that's how they want it to be. I think we're going to have a good year.

"I know, coming into this year, our organization, we're going to come in swinging this year."

There's actually someone more optimistic about this team than me?

Buster, my man. You're funny.
oh, he absolutely is.. especially since the jets went from being unorganized, year 1, to very unorganized in year 2.. but here's the real comedic gold.. not only are the jets going to stop being one of the least organized teams in the league, (when they played a bunch of veterans) they will become one of the most organized in '17..

why you may ask?? well, because skrine "knows coach bowles" & as we all well know, bowles is a no nonsense disciplinarian.. that & again, as we all well know, the formula for fielding an organized team is to play a bunch of kids instead of veterans..

...jeezbus..

Its better than saying we're gonna suck.
how about:

"yes, we are a young team now & we've lost some season veterans but we aren't going to using that as an excuse.."

"this is the NFL.. nobody is going to feel sorry for us because it's hard to win games win a young team.."

"i feel it's my time as a younger veteran on this team to take on more responsibility helping the younger guys on & off the field.."

i would much rather hear stuff like that than have my intelligence insulted..

Here's the kicker - he's wrong, the team is rebuilding, but the franchise is in a no-win.

The Jets are mocked by both haters and some of their own devout fans (as evidenced on this board) as having no talent. Yet if the team somehow managed to be competitive this upcoming season, Bowles would still get the hate from the fan base. He could take a team that Fan X says has zero talent, make them 9-7 or 10-6, and Fan X will destroy him for not getting them into the playoffs. He gets them into the playoffs, and Fan X will say it doesn't matter unless they win it all, and all he's done is ruin a good draft spot.

with all due respect, couldn't you have at least waited for the thread to go off the rails, before going off on a tangent??

If Todd Bowles managed to somehow go 9-7 and get the Jets into the playoffs, I will go streaking through the stadium at halftime. That's how confident I am that will NEVER happen.

Whether you like Bowles or not, he really is in a tough spot with this roster. We've stripped down the team and started a rebuilding process that will almost certainly take at least a few seasons. To Sackexchange's point, in all likelihood the fans are gonna be pissed no matter what: if they go 4-12 and don't uncover a QB, he's gonna get ripped. If they go 8-8 and sleepwalk through a season of mediocrity with limited talent, he'll get ripped. A LOT has to go right to keep favor with some fans.

This isn't a full endorsement of the guy. I understand he needs to be better this season. But the odds are, the team won't be playing for much other than seeing a few players possibly be the new Quincy Enunwa's of the 2017 season. I know my expectations aren't very high.

I agree. I don't see it happening. Not a chance with this rebuild.

Skrine is getting his cardio workouts get to his head...

It's a Rebuild "Buster" (pun intended).

The team under acheived last year with an exuberant amout of talent on the field. Mac did what was needed inorder to start from scratch. Yes Cardio-Master Skrine...the term "STARTING FROM SCRATCH" is defined as REBUILDING

Now go back to your Burpees.
