In 2010 this team was SB ready. Before that season, the only things being debated was whether Sanchez had it in him to lead this team to the SB, the debate was how many games they'd win and if they would host a playoff game?

Fast forward to now and you can see things are the total opposite. After the 2010 season is this team started on their path to the toilet. Just one bad decision right after another. Bad front office, bad coaching, bad drafting, bad acquisitions or lack thereof. The list just goes on and on. Just about 10 years now of terrible drafting.

So I ask the question, is Thursday when things finally make a change for the better? This draft for me has the same feel as the 2014 draft. In 2014, Idzik had multiple picks and the draft was a very pivotal one for the Jets as a whole? They could have really started down the right path with that draft. Instead it was the icing on the ineptitude cake.

I see this draft much the same way? This draft, just like in 2014, is loaded with talent. The Jets could easily make a name for themselves as a good, stable organization that makes sound decisions with this. Mac has been very unimpressive the past two seasons, but with a great Draft this week he could easily rebuild his reputation.

At this time in a week from now, will we be seeing the end of the Quinton Coples and Dee Milliner type drafts? Will this instead be a 2006 type draft?

Who can be sure?
I still remember the old joke:
"Someone told me to smile, things could be worse.
So I smiled.
And things got worse".

You never know. We're Jets fans. We're prepared for the disastrous. Its in our DNA. I'm NOT a SOJ kind of guy. But it will take a few years to be able to accurately answer your question.

LOLz i would bet one thing we can be sure of.. maccagnan knows, regardless of what else he does later this week, he can't shit the bed in rounds one & two..

no "one trick ponies" or "red shirt" 2nd rounders.. no "undersized specialists" in the 1st round either..

a GMs claim to fame in the first two rounds cannot only be leonard williiams falling into his lap..

& yes, the jury is still out on the kids i alluded to..

The opportunity is there. I am generally slightly more optimistic than pessimistic, especially when compared to some understandably jaded Jets fans. But I've been jaded, too, and I know this could all blow up in our faces.

My hope is that my initial sense of Mac as a legit football guy and judge of talent was correct, and the team seizes this opportunity to set us up for success in 2018/9 and beyond.

IMO, when you consider how deep this draft is AND how little the Jets have on their roster talent wise, Mac MUST come away with at least 3 first day or eventual starters? I mean there's really no other way. If he's going to rebuild this team he MUST get started with it already. This draft is loaded with talent in many need areas for this team. Honestly, it should easier than most drafts to come away better than normal talent. It's been beaten like a dead horse, but based solely on results, this team is no better now than they were when Mac got hired. Now I understand the HC had a lot to do with how it looked last season, but a good GM that does good drafting consistently can make things much easier for the HC.

Bottom line for me is if Mac is the guy to rebuild this team? He must get started on it, RIGHT NOW, or in 3 days to be exact........

And I really would beg to differ with someone who feels I am being unusually critical of the GM? This is his 3rd season as GM. Is it too much to ask to see a much improved team in 2017? A team that wins at least TWO more games than in 2016? I don't believe it is. Jets fans cannot wait forever. Being a GM is a results oriented business as much as it is for the HC, without going inside the draft (which at that point could be debated), shows Mac is treading water at very best.........

His judgement of talent needs to show itself.. now..

I get your point. You want Mac to find guys that don't need to bake in the oven for a season or two, but guys that step right on the field and make an impact?

I some what agree with this draft being a pivotal draft for the franchise.... The big difference is we only have 7 picks in this draft and as you pointed out we had multiple picks,12 picks to be exact, in 2014. Also Macc was Executive of the year in 2015. Hindsight is 20/20 but in my opinion. His first years draft was ehhh but it's great because he took the Leo and sometimes one player can make a whole draft but his 2016 draft was dynamite.... He got it right with Jordan Jenkins, Shell and Burris showed they can play in the NFL with good upside with, Peake in a limited role showed big upside for a 7th round pick. Punter Edwards got better at the end of the year. 5 of his 7 picks for where they were taken are all hits. NOw the 2 question marks... Lee was up and down I saw some good, some great and some bad and some awful.... The potentials there we need to see consistency this year. Jury is till out. And say what you want about picking Hack but you can't say it's a bad pick yet... Lets see the kid play... Throw in signing Robbie Anderson and UFA after last year. The fact he wouldn't pay Fitz 17 million a year for 3 years like Fitz wanted and I can make the argument Macc did his job better in his second year than his first year when he won the Executive of the year... Unfortunately Bad QB play and terrible coaching killed us last year..

Agreed.

We won't be able to judge this draft for a few years. But his first couple drafts should start showing results by now.

In my case, I don't care about whether they can step on the field right away. I'd rather have the guys who will be the best players in 2-3 years. If the Jets were competitive and on the verge of competing, maybe you pick guys who are closer to their peak now and are ready to step on the field now. But since they're not, I'd go for guys with the highest ceiling and the greatest likelihood of achieving it.

My question is, why? Does 2017 mean that much to you?

You'd rather pass on guys with higher ceilings to go with guys who can step in immediately?
yes, as far as what hackenberg & petty.. '17 will be a full bore re-build.. i've come to terms with that.. i want us to unequivocally have at least an understanding what we have with both kids by seasons end..

but i'm speaking from a standpoint of what maccagnan will in all likelihood do at this point in order to keep his job..

granted, that approach can/will be a bit cloudy, since bowles still does not answer directly to him.. so there is that..

I meant, does the 2017 season mean so much that we should draft players based on their ability to immediately impact the team, rather than the best long-term players?

If the team follows that philosophy, I fear this will be another opportunity where the franchise sacrificed long-term success in order to gain short-term moderate success.

would i prefer essentially fools gold over long-term value?? no.. but again, i'm speaking from where i believe maccagnan thought process will be.. no more no less..

again, hackenberg & petty are the two biggest questions i want answered in '17..

If Mac drafts players that can impact the team in a good way in 2017, then they will impact the team for the rest of their careers. At that point, Mac has finally done his job IMO. Like I said, it isn't IMO expecting too much to think this team will IMPROVE from last season? Mac is 3 years in. If he isn't expected to show some results with this team in year 3 then WHEN will he ever be expected to do that? Mac cannot, and you cannot allow him, to make parity a career. His job is about winning championships and I think it's time this team starts to drive in that direction. And yes, I think every season counts. Mac already got a mulligan for 2016...

Oh, I absolutely agree, I want to learn more about the two young QBs (or another, if they go that route). But unless the team was in a win-now mode, with the window closing, I wouldn't prioritize it over long-term gains.

Good post MJ.

Yep, this is a cross roads draft. As said above should have happened in 14, but...............

Mac just said yesterday that when you are picking a guy at number 6, you want a guy that can step right on the field.......
