I usually like what he writes but this is a hatchet job by Cosentino:

With Hightstown native Mike Maccagnan in place as the Jets' general manager, the next order of business is putting together the rest of the front office.
And one name, according to reports, has now popped up more than once as a potential candidate for some as-yet-unknown role: Gene Smith, who had been the general manager of the Jaguars from 2009-12 and basically ran the franchise into the ground.
Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com was first with this news on Wednesday, saying there's "a strong chance" Smith would have "a considerable role" with the Jets. And on Thursday, ESPN's Adam Schefter pointed out that Maccagnan and Smith are "close" while also saying Maccagnan is "strongly considering" bringing Smith aboard.
The Jags went 22-42 in Smith's time as GM, which is best remembered for his having selected punter—yes, punter—Bryan Anger in the third round of the '12 draft. The Seahawks took quarterback Russell Wilson five picks later, though several teams obviously missed him more than once. Besides, the Jags didn't need a quarterback that year because Smith had selected Blaine Gabbert the year before. And Gabbert, taken with the 10th overall pick in 2011, turned into a colossal bust who was traded last spring to the 49ers, where he's now the backup to Colin Kaepernick. Anger, at least, is still with the Jaguars, so score one for Smith, I suppose.
But that's not even the worst of it. Smith was so overly insistent on acquiring "high-character" players in Jacksonville he seemed to forget he was running a football team and not a church bake sale. Check this out, from a March 2012 story in the Florida Times-Union:
And he commented that the two players they've signed in free agency, Laurent Robinson and Chad Henne, have stable family lives.
Of Robinson, he said, "He is married. He's got a wonderful wife. That's the thing about Chad and Laurent. They're both married. They're both 26. We're getting them in the prime of their careers.''
Later he said, "When you get two people, like I said, in their mid-twenties that are married and have wonderful wives, they're kind of like me because I think they were able to over-marry. I think it helps bring stability to their life.''
No idea what any of that crap has to do with a guy's ability to play football, or to live a life of "stability" off the field. The Jets don't need Pat Robertson in their front office, but at least Smith won't be in charge if they do decide to add him to the payroll.
