The NFL is adding a combine for veteran players to go with the massive event it holds for potential draftees.

The NFL plans to hold a scouting combine for veteran free agents in Phoenix in March.
The veterans' combine will take place March 22 at the Arizona Cardinals' training facility in Phoenix. That is about one month after the regular combine in Indianapolis for rookies.

Matt Birk, director of football development, told the 32 teams about the new combine Thursday. It will be open to veteran free agents who will participate in position-specific drills, timing and testing.

In the past, some veteran free agents have been included in the NFL's regional combines held for draft-eligible players. But the new format will serve to isolate and consolidate veteran free agents for a more-focused evaluation.

The league expects to invite about 100 free agents to the Arizona combine.

I wonder how many of the FA's are going to show? For the most part, Vets aren't in the best shape at the end of March. Plus, do 30 YO Vets really want to be comparing forty times with 21 YO's who have been going to these conditioning schools for 2 months to prepare for the draft.

On the flip side, think of what this does to boost their status and get that next contract. And they're not competing against rookies, just against other veterans. And I guess you're assuming they drop in time and athleticism as they age. While you could be right, I wouldn't make that leap as many of these players must stay in top condition throughout their careers. I personally love the idea and I'll bet it was suggested by other veterans to create.
