  • How to improve the Jets offensive line woes...

Everything starts up front, and key issues in the first two games can be blamed on one player, James Carpenter entering his eighth season and he is yet to establish himself as a liable well rounded anchor at the left guard position. His style is a road grader, impact blocker while we are running a zone blocking scheme for our West Coast playbook he has been getting beat like a drum from either speed rushes or power rushes. Only solution right now is to either ride it out being that Carpenter is in his contract year and will be a free agent after this season or is to attempt to trade him to a team that can use his services.

Solution A) Spencer Long former guard before making the switch to center could replace James Carpenter at left guard, allowing Sam Darnold's Southern California Trojans teammate Nico Falah step up into the starting role where the two have continuity playing together. It isn't sexy but Long would make Beachum better while helping the rookie command and develop the rookie.

Solution B) Jonathan Harrison or Dakota Dozier are both viable short term options can split share snaps at the left guard position like how Qvale and Shell rotate at right tackle.

Solution C) Re-sign Ben Braden to the active roster, insert him into the lineup.

Solution D) Convert Brent Qvale from right tackle to left guard where he seem to show promise last season kicking it inside from tackle to guard.

Solution E) Scour free agency or practice squads for a player to develop or split snaps with whomever they put into the rotation.

After this season Kelvin Beachum could become a cap casualty with poor on field play, could be trade bait. Also Brian Winters will be entering non-guarantee contract opening him up to be traded or released with 2 years remaining after this year. Same goes for Spencer Long this is the only year with guarantees has three years remaining after this season with NO guarantees.

Jets are lined up after this season to re-design the entire offensive line from starters to depth, but we already know our GM won't draft prospects to develop but rather pay for old guys to hold up moving forward.

On the other hand this could be the final season for both GM & HC, then a new GM could come in and actually draft needs rather than hope the best player available falls into their lap.

I don’t believe they’ll be a sweeping overhaul of the line. I don’t believe we need one, either. Long has looked good at the anchor from the moment he got here. And Shell looks good in the first two games. Winters is a starting caliber player.

I can see the team upgrading the left side. Beachum and Carpenter should be upgraded. And with FA and the draft as options, I’m confident it’ll get taken care of.

Hey how about NOT putting our TE to block their best Pass Rusher? That would help a lot to NOT see our TE line up to block the Fins or this weeks Browns Pass Rushers! Just dunb and looked bad watching our TE get thrown down while on his way to Darnold. Oh some other thought. How about NOT telegraphing our Plays to Defense? I was under the impression Jets Offense was to fool Defenses keeping them off balance? So how about NOT putting all WRs on the field without a RB so not to TELL them its a PASS PLAY?? Better how about having a WR on the field with a RB when we are running the ball? Instead of zero pass catchers telling the Defense we are running the Ball! Only other thing is STOP trying to running the ball up the middle with our RB's! We dont have AP who is big enough to run up the middle even when we tell them its pass or run. Really great OC. Only thing as bad is Bowles who's Defense is just Bland, but in this week might be good so Taylor doesnt run all over us. I want a WIN tonight on National TV and not some dumb play calling by our OC like he did against the Fins. BTW Darnold getting hit because of that TE-DE miss match made him hurry looking at only 1 WR that got picked off. So it does effect Darnolds play in looking over the field.

Well I think losing on National TV to the Browns thanks to Bowles and our OC is right up there with the BUTT FUMBLE! How many more years do we have to endure this humiliation from Owners-GM-HC-OC ? Even worse is Sam Darnold is regressing with less completions and more INTs. Darnold was lucky he didnt have at least 4 INTs in this game. Sadly as I thought from the beginning when Mikey Drafted Darnold that he was not the right QB and its looking like the turn overs and INTs are continuing to NFL. I guess Ill put my Jets gear away till next year so I dont have to be laughed at by fans of every other team. In guess that makes JETS top losers in NFL by losing to Browns and rookie Mayfield staring at every WR he threw to.

You can't look at this from a football standpoint. You have to look at for what is is. Jets football. It's been this way since 1970. Whoever we bring in does the same stupid shi t as the last guy. We had one chance to be a winner and that was with Parcells. And how did we screw that up? The Jet curse. Our owner died one year too early , as we would have won the superbowl that year. Instead the team was sold, Parcells left, Belichick fucked us hard and we have been back to sucking ever since.

it's not about who's on this team, or coaches it or manages it it's about this franchise having bad luck, or bad karma or the curse of Namath. How can the same shi t happen here year in and year out no matter who runs the show? It ridiculous!

Only 3 weeks in and I'm already bringing up the cursed franchise talk. Next week is a loss. No wait, it helps the cheetahs get Home field throughout if we beat Jacksonville. Looks like a win next week

sort of like Detroit did? that game was exciting cause we scored a lot, but if you really look at it, Detroit shot themselves in the foot, the leg, in a whole bunch of places

the only way we beat Jacksonville is to help the cheatahs and by dumb luck. I already have 1-3 penned in. 1-15 is in pencil for now

Yup & they gave up My 7-9 prediction is optimistic. After all, I am a Jets fan. (Almost said, I love the Jets - not right now though!)

So this post was about how to improve the offensive offensive line. Easy. first we sneak over to foxboro and kidnap Dante Scarnechia the cheatahs offensive line coach. then we have gronk smoke some doobies with the cheetahs offensive line and make them believe that they are Jets now, reinforced by scarnechia being here already. I think this will work. It certainly a better plan then using anyone we have now. But then if our offense was better , then our defense would get worse. The Jet Way

Oh I know that's you being optimistic. you certainly couldn't really believe that;) I'm the prototypical pessimistic Jet fan. I see 1-15

See that was easy....... Anyway you look at it this line is where most of us thought it would be. We need to build it through the draft case closed

I mentioned it in the chat thread last night, but I’m running out of patience with the o-line. Darnold was running for his life with limited time to throw. The line has gotten worse since the Lions game. When they face good pass rushers like they did against Miami and Cleveland, they struggle.

A big big reason why so many plays were designed for quick release throws to shorter routes last night. We can’t throw deeper without better protection. This line needs to be addressed the second this season is over. Free agency and the draft. Do whatever it takes. Long is the only player safe IMO.

no one safe the Jets gave him a contract that lets them off the hook after the first year...

Long has blown assignments and he is the guy setting the protection... Long can stay with Winters past this year as long as either Falah or someone else is drafted to be the center/free agency is slim pickings unless someone gets released (cap casualty)... We are going to need one or two veterans to allow the new guys to have some sort of leadership and the two guards make sense... Harrison is backup center, omg, he only good for a couple snaps then he becomes a problem with penalties...

Our tackles suck... Qvale on a RFA tender ($1.9 M) is not coming back after this year for what to sit on the bench and collect money... Shell has improved some but is it enough?... Beachum can not handle his responsibilities and becomes a liability that Carpenter can not assist because he can not handle his own either...

Feel out the market trade Beachum now rather than later, rather ride or die with Qvale at Left tackle more agile and capable maybe to handle responsibilities of a zone blocking scheme, same goes for elevating Dozier over Carpenter... All about scheme fit and only some are capable of making the adjustments no matter who is coaching them..

Draft will be slim pickings next year we missed a loaded class but some are on practice squads that have more talent then our current roster...

There is plenty of talent or potential still in FA now or on other team's practice squads of players just drafted this year... But it seems Maccagnan is too scared to pull the trigger, and this was his area of expertise, so far grade (Incomplete) not even an F...

I believed things would be better with a healthy Winters, a new and better Center, and a RT trending upwards. The season is still young, but unless they play better than the last two games, a few of these guys are gone for sure in January.

                                                        Easy.
Find a GM who recognizes this is a problem and makes it a priority to fix it.
As for a new line coach?
You can't make chicken salad out of chicken s**t with a few chunks of ok chicken mixed in.

Maccagnan has addressed it. He’s acquired three starters and drafted Shell. We all agree the line needs more in terms of talent, but to say Macc hasn’t addressed it simply isn’t true.

And before you say “yeah but they all suck”, remember Beachum was a good player in Pittsburgh, and was the best FA option at the time he was acquired. Carpenter was a former first round draft pick who played very well his first season with the Jets, but has since tailed off. Long looks like a keeper at Center. So yes, we need replacements, but the line hasn’t been neglected by “an incompetent GM” like some fans are suggesting.

Beach-bum may have been good in Pittsburgh for one year (one year wonder) But after he got hurt (ACL) he was not very good again.....Mac bought damaged goods. You can always bring in bodies but we need quality bodies. But it is not easy to do in this day & age...Az, the Giants and others have the same problem.

As I said before, when a GM addresses certain areas of need, it’s often going to put less emphasis on spending big money elsewhere. He tried to find some bargains on the line while drafting big on defense and finding the young QB. This isn’t uncommon. Rarely does a GM build an entire elite team at all positions in 4 years. You’ve got to get lucky with some bargain finds and middle round draft picks too.

Macc gets one more year to finalize this team. He’s gonna have plenty of cash and picks to do it.
