Justyn Ross Scouting Report

Justyn is a versatile weapon, proving to be effective in the slot and outside on the perimeter. He makes plays at all levels of the field. He does not possess top breakaway speed, though he is rarely caught from behind. He generally reliable receiver capable of making difficult catches in traffic over the middle or one on one down the sideline. He often used on deep routes, getting separation down the sideline or over the middle on crossing routes by extending his arms rather than pure speed.

Ross has the strong hands that coaches and quarterbacks would covet at the next level. He tracks the deep ball over either shoulder and brings in passes fluidly without breaking stride downfield. He does a nice job locating and tracking deep passes and is a legitimate vertical threat. He is willing to go up and attack the ball. Justyn is a strong runner with the ball with enough agility to make defenders miss in the open field. He has good body strength out of tackles with the coordination to maneuver his frame between defenders.

Justyn RossAreas for Improvement

Justyn comes off the snap high and upright. He does not get to top speed quickly. He is not sudden nor elusive. He does not always use his hands to secure deep throws, allowing the ball into his pads and/or chest.

He relies on winning contested catches, which may also limit his ability to make big plays after the catch. He is often taken down by the first tackle in the open field. He rarely makes a man miss, once again meaning he offers little opportunity for after the catch yardage.

Justyn Ross Career at Clemson

Following some impressive training camp performances, Ross made his debut as a Clemson WR in the season opener. The tall pass catcher made an immediate impact, snagging a touchdown against Furman. Two weeks later, against Georgia Southern, the true freshman put up his first 100+ yard receiving game.

Impressively, Ross broke triple-digit receiving yards on just 3 receptions.

Although Ross would become a consistent thorn in the side of ACC defenses during the 2018 season, he wouldn’t break 100 yards again until the College Football Playoffs. In the semifinal win over Notre Dame, Ross exploded into life. The Clemson WR snagged 6 receptions for 148 yards at an incredible 24.7 yards per catch.

Ross saved his best for the biggest stage of them all. Clemson claimed the college football national championship trophy with a win over Alabama. Ross secured a career-high 153 receiving yards at 25.5 yards per catch. He also added a touchdown in the 44-16 victory. Finishing the season with a team-high 1,000 yards and 9 touchdowns, Ross was named a Freshman All-American.
