James Mitchell Scouting ReportJames has versatility and balance skill sets which are typically viewed as valuable traits. He boasts both experience all over the offensive formation and is a well rounded prospect with a pool of ablities. Mitchell routinely lines up in the slot, out wide, in line, H Back and even in the backfield. In 2020, he returned punts for the Hokies late in the season. James is an adequate athlete with solid movement skills. His top speed is sufficenet. He has above average lateral movement skills. Mitchell has consistently proven himself a reliable option at the catch point with excellent hands who uses his large frame to shield the ball from defenders. James has impressive ball tracking skills and body control. He routinely works through contact with very little difficulty. He also occasionally adjusts his speed to lull defenders to sleep. He is physicall and surprisingly shifty. He plays with a hot motor. He employs leg drive, leverage and a wide base to manufacture power. James has sufficient grip strength and mirroring ability to sustain blocks. He is an adequate lead blocker thanks to his movement skills. He excell in zone blocking schemes and has the awareness to pic up delayed blitzers in pass protection. He has potential as a seam threat at the next level. |
Areas for ImprovementJames Mitchell provides versatility and has all the natural movement skills but his route running could be more crisp at the top of the routes. He is good at shielding defenders but could be more consistent in making the catch. He has a tendency to run without securing the ball, so catching and tucking the ball away should become priority. He is a sufficient run/pass blocker but still has choppy footwork that may lead him to lean instead of set and absorb with leverage.

James Mitchell Career at SchoolJames Mitchell was a versatile athlete in high school. He helped guide Union to a trip to the 2A semifinals in 2017. He played for head coach Travis Turner. A four time all state tight end and a USA Today All Virginia First Team selection. He racked up 756 receiving yards on 42 catches and nine touchdowns in his career. He was also pressed inot duty at quarterback due to injuries as well as punt returner. He was also a two time first team all conference pick as a basketball player. In 2018, he played in all 13 games primarily on special teams. He started his first game at tight end verse Marshall (12/1). Following year he played in all 13 games with eight starts. He was paired with Dalton Keene to give Tech one of the ACC's most dynamic tight end tandems. He saw action in 10 games with nine starts in 2020. He totaled 26 receptions for 435 yards and caught a team high four touchdowns. He also registered a rushing touchdown. Was named All ACC Second Team (PFF College). In 2021 he made five receptions for 42 yards and a touchdown. He suffered a knee injury against Middle Tennessee State on September 13.

He is not going to dazzle with speed but has enough functional agility to create separation over the middle and down the seam. He uses his former basketball ability to shield defenders to give his quarterback a wider target to throw too. At the next level his versatility will give that team ability to use him in many different ways. .
