Matt Bockhorst Scouting Report

Matt Bockhorst plays through the whistle and has a mean streak, traits that any O-line coach loves in a player. The 6-foot-5, 300 pounder is strong, aggressive and finishes blocks with authority. He possesses solid footwork and athleticism, especially for his size, and has the ability to pull outside on run plays.

Matt moves well and squares to finish on the move. He is better at anchoring and is capable of absorbing a punch while still capable of quickly recovering. He has the height with a narrow base out of his stance. He is a solid positional run blocker who flashes the nasty demeanor and killer instinct scouts covet.

Matt dips his shoulder and moves his feet to get outside leverage when needed. He is strong and low coming out of his stance, effective in short yardage situations. He finishes and doesn't quit. He is a competitor with a positive attitude and leadership traits that coaches admire.

Matt BockhorstAreas for Improvement

Bockhorst bends at the waist and loses leverage. He also has a tendency to lunge and lean too far when flustered. He struggles to get low enough to maintain leverage. He won't be able to cut more agile NFL linemen because he is not sudden and gathers before lunging.

Matt absorbs too many hits, delivers only a few. He is technically unpolished and stops his feet on contact. He is not a threat in space and lacks overall awareness. He is a finesse blocker with average arm length who does not use his hands well to win at the point of attack. He will punch at smaller defenders instead of latching on and is more of a mauler than mover in the running game. He can improve maintaining outside leverage when doubling the nose. He ducks his head and gets too upright, causing him to fall off second level blocks.

Matt Bockhorst Career at Clemson

Matt Bockhorst was 2016 Under Armour All American. During his senior of high school he did not play due to injury suffered at The Opening in Oregon. He was still listed as a Top 200 prospect by many of the services for 2016. He was rated No. 157 by ESPN, they also listed him No. 5 in the state of Ohio and No. 12 at his position nationally. His true freshman year at Clemson he redshirted.

In 2018, redshirt freshman Matt played 178 snaps over 13 games. In 2019, he played 421 snaps over 15 games with one start. He helped Clemson finish fourth in the nation in points per game (43.9). Clemson reached fifth in total offense (school record 528.7 yards per game).

Entering 2020 he was named Second team All ACC pick who played 753 snaps in starting all 12 games as Clemson led the ACC as the only team to allow fewer than two sacks per game. Was named NSCA Strength and Conditioning All American, All ACC Academic Team Selection. Coming back for his redshirt senior campaign, he played 410 snaps before succumbing to an ACL injury during game against Pittsburgh effectively ending his Clemson Tiger career.

Matt Bockhorst NFL Draft Player Profile

Right guard that looks the part. Bockhorst manages to keep his pads low, allowing him to work under defenders at times. He has good eyes to locate linebackers on the move. In pass protection he is best jump setting as he can shoot his hands right away. Once he lands his punch, he is able to grip and latch on initially. Bockhorst keeps his feet moving.
