Mike Miranda Scouting Report

Miranda is a solid positional run blocker who flashes the nasty demeanor and killer instinct scouts covet. Has average height with a narrow base out of his stance. Needs to get stronger in his lower half to anchor at the point of attack. He is fundamentally sound and understands blocking angles, using body positioning to his advantage. Disciplined awareness and good intelligence.

Miranda dips his shoulder and moves his feet to get outside leverage when needed. Strong and low coming out of his stance, effective in short-yardage situations. Has smooth lateral movement skills with good foot quickness. First off the snap and sets quickly. Aggressive and extends his arms into contact, delivering a sharp punch.

Areas for Improvement

Miranda is not explosive in any aspect. Lacks the quickness to redirect and handle cut blocks. Unable to complete most combo blocks. Gets an initial shove at the line but doesn't move the second target. Poor body control and lacks accuracy blocking on the move. He is not a natural knee-bender and gets too upright. Needs to play with better leverage and stay balanced through contact.

Mike has inconsistent quickness and lacks the natural burst to maintain balance and block in space. Extends his arms, but has soft hands and doesn't jolt rushers. He whiffs on blocks after beaten initially and lacks range and lateral quickness. Plays too high and without proper leverage, pad level and can be passive. He lacks foot speed to be a major threat as a lead blocker outside. Inconsistent latching on and gets lazy, bending at the waist.

Redshirt sophomore season he was tabbed with the offensive line unit for the Joe Moore Award Midseason Honor Roll. Appeared in 13 games, including eight starts at right guard. Earned second-team All-Big Ten laurels from the coaches and media. Selected to the Associated Press All-Big Ten second team. Named to Phil Steele's All-Big Ten third team. Was an honorable mention All-Big Ten honoree by Pro Football Focus. Made nine starts at left guard. Penn State ranked second in the Big Ten in total offense (430.3).

Mike Miranda NFL Draft Player Profile

Miranda has primarily lined up as the Nittany Lions’ left guard. Plays with more than sufficient athleticism. Lateral agility isn’t overly impressive but has adequate pop off the line of scrimmage and is able to square up his man at a timely rate. Power is blatantly apparent on tape, he does not shy away from bigger and stronger defensive linemen. The knowledge of which he knows how to use his hands is magnificent; some really impressive pass-rush counters. Keeps head up and his pad level is on point. Scheme-versatile - smaller player but plays big enough that he wouldn’t be a liability in a power-run offense.
