Tyrus Wheat Scouting Report

Tyrus is aggressive with good awareness to track the ball and attack. He is tencious, tough, competitive and versatile. He is an high effort, thickly built defender with good strength and the leverage to create a pile. He locates the ball quickly and pursues with passion. He shows good lateral agility while extending the play to the sideline.

Tyrus is an excellent hustle and chase tackler. He has good closing speed with change of direction to corral mobile quarterbacks. He has average quickness and limited arsenal pass rush moves. He flashes upper body strength to rip and has the punch to push through interior linemen on stunts and twists.

Areas for Improvement

Tyrus has average size, strength and lacks the bulk in his upper and lower body to hold up on the line. He is not a sudden athlete. He is very ordinary flexibility and fluidity. He is not overly explosive and lacks the speed to threaten the edge. He plays upright with limited power to disengage. He is not overpowering in any aspect.

Tyrus is not an elite athlete with average functional strength and size. He lacks the length to fend off blocks and can be too energetic and lose his angle. He does nto have a natural position at the next level. He plays tall, lacks athleticism to break down against elusive ballcarriers.

Tyrus has limited athleticism and range. He lacks natural explosing or first step burst to consistently threaten the edge. He misses tackles, even when he gets his hands on the ballcarrier. He needs to improve his hand placement and techinigue.

Tyrus Wheat Career at California/Mississippi State

Tyrus Wheat prepped at Amite High School under head coach Zephaniah Powell. He was a three-star prospect per ESPN, Rivals and 247Sports. He earned All-District 8-2A honors as a senior. For two seasons he attended Copiah Lincoln C.C. (2018-19). He was a three star junior college prospect per ESPN, Rivals and 247Sports. He was rated No. 1 junior college inside linebacker per 247Sports. He totaled 104 career tackles including 8.0 for loss. He also registered two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and five interceptions in 19 games played.

Tyrus junior season transferred to Mississippi State making his first career start in 2020 at LSU. He was one of 27 student athletes to make their Mississippi State debut. He appeared in nine games with eight starts. He compiled 30 total tackles 12 (solo) and six for loss. He also registered five sacks, one interception, three pass deflections, two forced fumbles with two fumble recoveries on the season.

Wheat had an even better 2021 campaign, notching 46 total tackles with 20 (solo) and 10.5 tackles for loss. He also registered 7.5 sacks for 52 yards loss. He continued to be a well rounded defender as he also registered one interception, three pass deflections, one force fumble and one fumble recovery on the season.

Tyrus Wheat is an interesting prospect. He’s a slightly undersized pass rusher who is effective from a three-point stance and standing over tackle. Wheat plays with terrific speed and makes plays in every direction. He’s worth a flier in the middle of Day 3 as a pass-rush specialist.
