Damarri Mathis Scouting Report

Mathis has good size at just a shade under six-foot-tall and 200 pounds. He has the athletic makeup defensive coaches search for in the big leagues and the football intelligence that makes him a nightmare for opposing offenses. He’s capable of playing both the slot and on an island. He is an aware zone corner who is also adept in man coverage.

Damarri flashes physical hand punch at the line and straight line speed to stay with receivers downfield. He is very aggressive attacking receiver blocks and tackles like a safety. He flashes some physciality as a hitter. He is tough in run support and works hard to get off blocks.

Mathis is a hard nose player who attacks the run and does not back down. He is an alert defender in zone coverage, showing good understanding of route progressions occurring behind him. He has a quick burst downhill to break on underneath passes in front of him. He transition well from coverage to close on the ball.

Damarri has strong hands, quick reaction for the interceptions. He has good instincts and anticipation reads and reacts with discipline. He is dangerous with the ball in his hands. He trusts his eyes with very good awareness. He has very good reaction skills to break quickly on the ball.

Areas for Improvement

Mathis is vulnerable to big plays trying to bait the quarterback. He lacks instincts with shaky awareness. He is overaggressive. Damarri too often bites on fakes and misdirection. He has a tendency to get lost in traffic. He needs to tighten his angles in pursuit. He has to do better tackling with technique rather than looking for the shoe string tackle.

Damarri Mathis Career at Pittsburgh

Damarri Mathis was a three year starter at cornerback for Lakeland. He compiled 73 tackles, 27 pass breakups and five interceptions for his varsity career. In 2017, he played in nine games, serving on special teams and as a reserve cornerback to letter as a true freshman. He totaled two tackles on the season.

His sophomore campaign, he played in all 14 games at cornerback, making two starts. He totaled 18 tackles, 2.5 for loss and one interception. He also had a pass breakup. Following year he played in all 13 games, starting 10 at corner. He totaled 23 tackles, two for loss. He had 11 pass breakups and two interceptions on the season.

Damarri did not play in any games due to a preseason injury in 2020. This year's campaign he totaled 43 tackles, 32 were solo also had two interceptions to cap off an impressive career.

Demarri is a versatile defensive back who has lined up in the nickel, on the outside and even as a deep safety. Mathis is a light-footed mover with easy change of direction in space and man coverage.

He possesses a quick first step to drive downhill. His aggressive play style and length allow him to get his hands inside on smaller wideouts and stall them at the line. Damarri is not afraid to establish contact with receivers. He comes downhill aggressively, sidestepping blockers in the run game and on screens.
