A fans thought on how Macagnan & Bowles are evaluating the roster

I'd love to read every ones opinion on how they view how both our new GM & new HC are scrutinizing this roster from head to toe and what they envision this team looking like in the near future. Here's my take.

From the GM's stand point i feel some of the Idzik philiosophy will be (i know you guys will hate this) very similar.
For instance, he will try to strive for continuity and long term success through the draft. That is about the end of that similarity with John. Macaganan IMHO, will work side by side with Coach Bowles as to how he wants to mold this team. If they have the funds, then they will spend in order to upgrade the positions of need.

Just for the mere fact that they're are making a conscious effort to go after, Iupati, Franklin & Carpenter to solidifying the O-Line, makes me feel confidient that they are building from the inside out. The way it ought to be as Mangini/Tanny did in '06 with D'Brick & Mangold. Then adding Faneca & Woody in the later years.

As far as the head coach. By all indications he's the anti-Rex, with the exception of blitzing the hell out of the opponent. He will not stand for a "Play it safe approach" on offense. That's indicative of the Chan Gailey signing as OC. He is one of the most creative minds in the game.

As far as how these two are evaluating the roster:

Defense:

D-Line is the area of strength this team has. Yet, they can't reach the QB. I feel Mac will acquire talent to help us in this category and not have Bowles rely soley on schemed Blitz (ala Rex)

Linebackers is very suspect in my opinion. Harris is as good as gone. Coples serves better as a down lineman. Then you have an aging Calvin Pace coming back. Mac needs to work on this area big time.

Secondary-Let's face it; Mac knows theres work to do and there are plenty of options to upgrade the position in free agency. They know they can't rely on Milliner.

Offense:

O-Line needs as much help as our CB situation. They can't create holes for any RB in our back field. They do not help any QB behind center in any way whatsoever as they get pumbled repeatedly.

Running back needs a helping hand of a play maker. I thought CJ2K was perfect, but because of our O-Line play, he had one of his worst seasons. There are options in the draft & free agency to add a complimentary back to go alonside Chris Ivory.

Wide reciever needs a true number one. We haven't had one since Keyshawn. Again, there are options out there, but it would bode well to select one in the draft as this year, the WR class is at it's finest.

Quarterback is an area that i feel Mac & Bowles are very very concerned about. I don't feel that they will place all their chips on a player such as Geno Smith who played so poorly last season that he was a major reason why the new HC/GM predecessors were let go. I find it hard to believe they would want to follow that same fate.
Yet, he's on the roster at a minimum. There will be free agents, or Via trade partners (Bucs, Philly, St.Louis) & the draft that can be brought in to cement their name for the 2015 season opener.

There will be enough competition this season at all positions, guaranteed.

[TWEET][/TWEET]QBs: Suck!!! They are probably willing to give Geno one last year to see how he does under the new regime but they much rather move on. They are contemplating should they draft Mariota if he is there, try to move up and get Winston or trade with Phila for the Foles and multiple draft picks deal. Don't think their sure yet but close on the decision.

RBs: Okay with what they have right now. Resigning Powell, Ivory ofcourse is there and they will draft a RB in about the 4th-5th round. I believe Richardson comes back next year also.

FBs: Have not thought much on how they fell on the FBs really.

WRs: They know they have to address this one way or the other. First they will cut Harvin and try to resign him at a friendlier deal for the Jets. Plus save the 4th round draft pick to Seattle. They will draft a WR but what round that all depends on if they sign a FA WR like Maclin, T. Smith or Cobb and ofcourse what they do with the #6 draft pick with Mariota or not. If they don't sign one of those FA WRs and not get Mariota then they will definitely draft Cooper or White. Regardless what they do with Harvin.

TEs: Pretty set here with Amaro really but back ups in Cumberland and Zudfeld.

O-line: They know they have to address this bad. Besides D-brick and Mangold that are getting up there in age, the rest of the O-line is suspect. They will address this hard in FA and draft.

D-line: Is our strength and straight here. They will bring in depth at most but no need to address at all really. Resigning Wilkerson is a top priority also.

LBs: Hurting bad here. They know they most replace Harris, Pace and hopefully they will move Coples back to his real position of D-line. Unless he lost 30 more pounds and has truly learned how to be a pass rushing and coverage LB.

CBs: Will address hard in FA. Revis most likely and maybe even Maxwell or Cro. If they draft one it will be in the later rounds.

FSs: Think they will go with Pryor but look to push him with competition.

SSs: Maybe they they go with Jarrett or Allen here. Not sure but they know this is no set position yet.

K/P: Think were good here from what I remember.

one big difference with bowles and rex though is yes they both blitz alot but bowles does it with changing personal and having fresh legs he doesn't let his defense get tired like rex did. Which is why I would expect alot of lower tier fa's being signed also because bowles needs bodies to make his defense work.
