FLORHAM PARK -- The Jets have to wait a bit longer to see rookie third-round pick ArDarius Stewart in action.

Coach Todd Bowles said Wednesday the wideout had surgery to repair preexisting injuries to his thumb and groin. He expects Stewart to be ready when training camp begins July 28.

Stewart practiced fully during the Jets three-day rookie minicamp. It's unclear how impacted he was by the injuries which, according to Bowles, occurred before the Jets drafted him. Stewart missed most -- if not all -- of the Jets' 10 organized team activities.

"Well there's no time like learning experience," Bowles said Wednesday. "So he has a lot of catching up to do."

It's hard to find a position impacted more by general manager Mike Maccagnan's offseason roster purge than receiver. The Jets cut bothBrandon Marshall and Eric Decker, their top wideouts the last two seasons. They're banking on young, unproven players to step up this year.

Quincy Enunwa and Robby Anderson figure to start outside, but Stewart, who drew comparisons to Dolphins stud Jarvis Landry in the months leading up to the draft, was in the running to play in the slot. Stewart caught 54 passes for 864 yards and eight touchdowns his final season at Alabama.

In minicamp, Jalin Marshall, who's suspended the first four games of the season, has worked in the slot.

Stewart was one of two receivers drafted by the Jets. The other, fourth-round pick Chad Hansen, is also out with an injury. Bowles said he's dealing with a sore knee. The coach didnt' seem overly concerned.

Let's just pray this isn't a sign that Stewart is another Dee Milliner? This very young inexperienced roster simply cannot to be hamstrung any worse than they already are.

for what it's worth, he definitely seems to take football much more seriously than milliner or smith..

this wasn't great news today but i still have a really good feeling about this kid..

stewart plays the game like he gives a shit.. he's got a coles type toughness about him..

There's many in the circles that I run in (in NE of course) that think it is always unwise decision to pick a player from Alabama? The thinking says MOST players from Alabama are forced to give it their all so much that by the time they get to the pros, they are used up. They specifically point to Dee Milliner as an illustration of that point.

I quite frankly think that's a crock of shit. Dee Milliner is an extreme example that has nothing to do with the norm? Most normally, players from Alabama are very safe picks, the guys that are most pro ready IMO. Other schools that provide such benefits would be OSU, Michigan, most of your big name SEC schools. They all have pro style offenses. They all play against the best collegiate competition for the most part.

Any way, players coming out of those schools have their youth. They still heal quickly and still have something to offer.

My personal concerns is do NOT pick any player if they are injured and do not stand to be ready for opening day. Also stay away from players that have extensive injury histories. Dee Milliner was a kid with an extensive injury history. We also know John Idzik is not cut out to be a GM, probably never will be?

In reference specifically to Stewart, I am fine that he's a little banged up. I mean shit happens, injuries will happen. I just want him to be ready for opening day and I don't think that's too much to ask?
