INDIANAPOLIS -- Linebacker Jaylon Smith, considered one of the top players in the 2016 draft, said he hopes to play at some point during his rookie season after suffering what he said was a torn left ACL and MCL in Notre Dame's Fiesta Bowl loss to Ohio State.

"That's the goal, you know, as soon as possible," Smith said Friday from the NFL scouting combine. "I can't tell when I'll be back, but I'll be back 100 percent."

Will the Cowboys take a quarterback early, even with Tony Romo coming back healthy? After a season in which the lack of a competent backup cost them a playoff spot, Mel Kiper thinks they could.
Smith declared for the draft after the injury in January and started walking again last week. He said he will return to Indianapolis for the injury recheck process in early April before the draft.

The 20-year-old Smith said he did not suffer nerve damage in the knee, adding that there is no soreness or pain there. He did say, though, that he didn't know when everything will heal.

"The nerve isn't stretched at all," Smith said.

Smith does have a loss-of-value insurance policy, but he declined to give details of what would have to happen for him to collect on it. He still views himself as the top player in the 2016 draft and he hopes to go in the top 10.

He had 113 tackles, nine tackles for loss and five pass breakups last season for the Irish.

Smith said he would stress in meetings with teams that he is a long-term investment for a franchise. At the combine, Smith said among the teams he met with were the Lions and the Packers, calling the Green Bay get-together "a great meeting."

He said it's been great watching former Georgia running back Todd Gurley come back from a significant knee injury in his final college season to play well as a rookie for the Rams. He called it "encouraging."

"It's a long-term decision, you know, whoever drafts me," Smith said. "I'm a guy who will be around for a while playing at an elite level and an impact player."

does jaylon smith have nerve damage in his knee?

Only thing I have read on that is the fact that he was wearing a brace, might mean they are trying to protect him from having nerve damage.

no not exactly what it was reported that he has nerve damage, period. then it was re-reported that the nerve damage is in his knee. but the actual report that was taken out of context is that Jaylon Smith is no longer wearing a knee brace and is wearing an AFO brace to help stabilize his knee after surgery to repair both the MCL & ACL ligaments.

Have to remember he tore both the ACL & MCL ligaments. The nerve damage they are speaking about is in the knee between those ligaments. The Combine doctors don't do a full workup, they look at the files do a once over then give their analysis which is broad at best. After the Combine, doctors for teams will re-evaluate Smith's diagnosis and rehab to see where he is and if it is as bad as first reported at the Combine.

I think there is so many variable sources of information out there that too many people read into it wrong. I keep saying don't let the initial reports scare you, as the in depth reports are yet to be released. He just had surgery six weeks ago how good do you think they are going to report about his current status.

Now not saying he will make a full recovery, maybe he will have lingering affects. And some sources besides Jaylon himself, stated he could play not only a part of 2016 season but the whole season.

That is why I am leaving his status right now, unknown.

i would think the only source to give any real credence to would be the NFL doctors that examined smith at the combine..

Tennesse Titans orthopedic surgeon was the Combine doctor, but there were other NFL team doctors also giving their prognosis most the time smoke screen to allow their team an advantage.
