Ben Petrula Scouting Report

Ben is a four year starter. He has played right tackle and right guard. He is a powereful lineman who has had plenty of success as a drive blocker in the run game when he has chances to uproot defensive linemen stacked on top of him and washes out defenders when he has an angle on them. He demonstrates a stout anchor in pass protection and rushers aren’t going to find success trying to go through him. His range is modest but he finds success on the second level when he’s a playside blocker. Blocks with an edge and finisher’s mentality. Ben fared better as a run blocker in 2020 where he can be more aggressive with his hands and not have to play on an island.

Areas for Improvement

Doesn’t have the desired footwork to truly offer positional flexibility at tackle. Has to do a better job of sliding his feet when connected with pass rushers and not folding at the waist when they try to work to his edges. Length appears to be an issue and he is regularly outreached and opponents are able to get into his framework. Has a low hand carriage and slow punch. Catches more than he punches. Lateral quickness is pedestrian and he has challenges reach blocking on the backside on zone runs. Needs to execute with better control of his frame—too many reps of waist bending, tardy feet, and hands that never get fit.
