This is the season in which all the Jets’ quarterbacks get to say they want to start. Ryan Fitzpatrick’s performance has given them an incentive to apply for the position.
First, Geno Smith was “getting antsy” about playing backup. Now, Bryce Petty is throwing his name into the mix.
“I want to contribute. I want to compete,” Petty said this week.
“But that’s everybody in this locker room. So, I just have to continue to get better and study that book and study the game plans and be ready to rock n’ roll. That part hasn’t changed since Day One. So, definitely, yeah, I’m ready to play.”
Petty’s place on the depth chart is an open question right now. If, for some reason, Smith gets pulled, do they go back to Fitzpatrick, or try their hand at the future. Surely, there must be some reason he’s on the roster.
In what has basically amounted to a wasted season, with Fitzpatrick clearly on the way out and Smith in a contract year, Petty is starting to feel that he could actually get a chance.
“Shoot, I want game action,” Petty said. “That’s all you can ask for in life in general, much less in this game. So, I definitely want an opportunity. My plan is to go in and prepare like I am and then just wait for my number to be called and just jump on that opportunity.
“I’ve been in this league a short amount of time, but what I have learned is that when you do get your opportunity, you got to jump on it. Because they’re quick and few and far between.”
