Lovie Smith hints the Bucs are open to trading down

Some years, the team with the top overall pick in the draft is so enamored with a franchise quarterback that it never talks much about the possibility of picking anyone else. When the Colts drafted Andrew Luck, for instance, it was obvious for months in advance that that’s what they were planning to do, and the team never said otherwise.

The Bucs aren’t taking quite the same approach this year. Although most people think they’ll take Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston, and that if they don’t they’ll go for Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota instead, Bucs coach Lovie Smith told NFL Network his team might surprise people.

“I can see why people would assume we’re gonna take a quarterback,” Smith said. “There are two excellent quarterbacks that are available at the top and when you get a chance to draft someone like that, most of the time, people do. But there are other good players in the draft also. I think it’s a deep draft for defensive line. Like last year, there are a lot of great receivers that are coming out. I think, just overall, the amount of athletes coming into each incoming class, it’s pretty deep for players that can make an immediate impact.”

By making those comments publicly, Smith is signaling to other teams that if they’re interested in trading up, they should call Tampa Bay and make an offer. And that’s a smart thing to do: It’s always good to find out what you could get in a trade.

Whether the Bucs would actually pull the trigger on a trade remains to be seen. Passing up on a potential franchise quarterback is a tough decision to justify. But it’s a decision the Bucs will consider, if Smith is to be believed.

I have 2 initial thoughts on this:

1) float the idea to see if anyone offers the farm...just in case, because while they like Winston, they would take 3 1st rd picks and 2 2nd rd picks like the RG3 trade over drafting Winston if both options were on the table.

2) they really dont love Winston as a #1 pick value and hope someone really makes them an offer.

TRUTH: If Bucs want to trade the pick, they dont float the rumor in national media circles, they float it behind the scenes. The fact Lovie is saying this publicly its just as likely to be adding hype to the draft as an authentic plan to move the pick.

called what?

a team saying publicly it is open to offers? well that's not exactly anything enlightening. unless we are talking about a can't miss #1 pick, any team with a quarter of a brain will entertain offers for the #1 pick. it doesn't mean they will trade out, and in fact, i find it highly unlikely. but it would be stupid of them to say that had zero intention of entertaining trade proposals.

Houston Texans reportedly trying to trade No. 1 pick

Will Andre Johnson get his wish?

The Texans wide receiver told reporters last month that Houston would be wise to trade the first overall pick in May's draft, a scenario the team reportedly is considering after owner Bob McNair called it a "possibility" in January.

Dan Pompei of Bleacher Report was told at this week's NFL Annual Meeting that the Texans are "trying hard" to move down to "acquire extra selections." According to Pompei, the Buffalo Bills have emerged as one potential trade partner.

"It is unclear who the Bills would want in a trade-up scenario," Pompei wrote. "Some believe they would move up for a quarterback. They also could make good use of an offensive tackle such as Greg Robinson. And it would be something to see them pair Mario Williams with either Jadeveon Clowney or Khalil Mack."

It's an indication that the Texans might not be sold on Blake Bortles or any of the prospective quarterbacks at the No. 1 spot, especially if they could grab a young arm with Buffalo's No. 9 or Houston's second-round selection at No. 33.

Compensatory Picks
The NFL awarded 32 compensatory picks in the 2014 NFL Draft to 13 teams. Which two teams got the most picks? More...
It's anyone's guess who the Bills would be chasing with the top pick. General manager Doug Whaley said Monday "we're all in with" second-year signal-caller EJ Manuel, but coach Doug Marrone told reporters last month at the combine that Buffalo could go in any direction at the position.

If the Bills wind up at No. 1, we'd argue that "any direction" at quarterback is the name of the game in upstate New York.

I wonder if the Glazer family is pissed off that Jameis Winston wants to stay home during the draft. I know we have another thread going on this subject, but it makes me wonder if they have concerns about Winston's character issues ? I can't ever see another team giving up what The Redskins did to get RG3 in a trade ?

I agree no one will give up RG3 comp for a pick again...but people probably said that about the Hershel trade and then the Redskins do it 20 years later...

As for the staying home thing, they may be disappointed he's staying home, but I wouldn't think enough to not draft the guy. Joe Thomas OT Browns stayed home too..but he didn't go #1 . Winston staying home actually keeps him closer to Tampa for the big day, though. Maybe better for them to have him at home and drive, instead of fly, him over to the team complex later in the day.

Everything in life is available....if someone cam to you and offered you 3 or 4 times what your house is worth. guess what? .you would sell it or triple what your "porsche" is worth you would sell it.....every teams draft picks are available for the right price...

Remember "INDECENT PROPOSAL" lol

soon there will be rumors that some teams are interested in it.....how long before MEHTASSHOLE and MYERS start pushing for it....??

As mentioned above, it is most likely just a flyer to see if anyone is willing to do anything stupid. Then again maybe the Bucs really like Mariota better then Winston, and would like to trade down a few spots, get some picks , and still get Mariota.

I'm actually going with they just want to see what's out there, but you never know

In the movie, it was Demi Moore...in real life, she looks more like this:

Nobody thinks either of these QB's is a franchise changing QB. I hope the Jets stay far away from either.

I see how strongly you feel about his staying home if you suggest they could now want to move on from him but come on! Seriously? You can't possibly believe this.

They're willing to overlook the rape charge, the shoplifting and multitude of other infractions but staying at home with family is apparently an unforgivable sin. Yikes.

Well it was a detailed explanation of how I thought the number 1 will play out, a hypothetical. Until now, the bucs have been mum, and the world assumes they are set on Winston.

This is true. Until about 6 weeks ago, every one was saying it was a slam dunk Mariota was going to T B. I don't know what's changed.

Does the whole world think they changed their mind because he didn't have a good championship game?

I agree that Winston is the smarter pick than Mariotta, but my premise was, what if Tampa is uncomfortable with Winston, the hometown rapist? They don't want to tank the trade value by admitting they want to trade down, and imagine the chaos that would ensue. You already have browns and Philly rumors mix in that anyone in the top 6 could do any trade. ..
