Here's the gist: the two ways Italians say “sauce” in Italian are salsa and/or sugo. Both words translate as “sauce” but never as “gravy.” Ragù doesn't even translate as “gravy” but comes close enough since it involves meat which is what people really mean when they say “gravy”

Hmm........I thought gravy was that part of the steak you can't cut with a steak knife and pour over your potatoes and sauce is that tangy stuff that lubricates spaghetti so that you can swallow it and that nationality had nothing to do with it. Oh well............I guess maybe you can teach an OLD DOG new tricks.

I guess this is it. On pasta I am not sure but I guess if this is what Italian/American means. It is ok with me

If meat is cooked in the tomato base it's sauce, if no meat it's gravy, unless it has fish and seafood.
