Charley Casserly: Deon Simon is the next Damon Harrison

From a money standpoint I agree with you completely. He got a lot of money from the Giants. But Todd Bowles made a name for himself in Arizona with that up front trap where two DE's will cut in as they get into the backfield and shrink the pocket. The ONLY way that works is if you have a NT that can hold his ground. Snacks was great at specific scheme.

I am also pretty excited about what Deon Simon has to offer, but I'm sorry this guy is NO ready to replace Snacks Harrison at the drop of a hat.

In fact, I hear Simon has been labeled as being "LAZY" about learning his job. So here you have a guy that has NOT seen the field much at all since being drafted. He's way behind the learning curve for his job. He's also been labeled as lazy.

What I just mentioned does not fix itself over night. There's work to be done with Deon Simon to get him working and understanding what his responsibilities are.

Hence the reason I say we have a GIGANTIC, gaping hole at NT right now or at least for however long it's going to take for Deon Simon to show his value, because the fact is he's NOTHING right now other than a very strong kid that has never seen the field.

Fair enough.

NTs are easy to find - until you can't find one.
Packers been looking for a replacement for the 2009-2010 B.J. Raji since 2011 & can't find one.
Not even Raji has been able to play like Raji.

The Jets have been EXTREMELY lucky in that regard, but lucky can't last forever and when it runs out - trust HYATT™ - you WILL know it.
THEN the lamentations of the women and the hand-wringing will start.

Lazy is the worst thing you can hear about a player. I'd take a mediocre player with a high motor any day. Lazy = Coples

I don't recall hearing lazy describing Simon. I actually don't ever remember reading anything about him. In my opinion, if they thought Simon was lazy, they would have cut a while ago. I remember making some touch cuts last offseason. Why keep him over players that want to make it.

I'm not making any judgments because I haven't seen enough of him but here are a couple of scouting reports:
NFL.com:
STRENGTHS Imposing, wide frame. Displays powerful upper half with ability to manhandle centers or undersized guards. Can eat blocks and command his spot. Uses his hands well down the line of scrimmage against the run and has the tools to become a factor against the run as a pro.
WEAKNESSES Fails to fire off the ball with quickness or explosion. Plays with straight legs, leading to inconsistency in his forward charge after contact. Motor runs hot and cold depending on game he's having. Turns into bored pass rusher if initial pass rush is quelled. Still learning to use strength to be more effective bull rusher. Has limited play radius against the run.
DRAFT PROJECTION Round 7 or priority free agent
BOTTOM LINE Big-bodied defensive tackle who could find a home as a two-gapping nose guard in a 3-4. Simon is 24 years old and is coming off of a knee injury, but he has noticeable power and shows potential to slow the run in the middle of a defense. He needs much better pad level and plenty of coaching for his potential to be unlocked.
Bleacher Report:
STRENGTHS
A huge nose tackle prospect from tiny Northwestern State in Louisiana—that’s the Southland Conference—Deon Simon got a combine invite and impressed with 35 reps on the bench (225 lbs) and showed solid movement for a 321-pound frame. On film, he’s bigger and stronger than most at the opposition and easily handles interior blockers with his strength. He’s a natural space-eater.
WEAKNESSES
Playing against smaller competition has allowed some bad habits. Simon is slow off the ball at times and tries too often to get cute in his pass-rush moves. He doesn’t always use his power to his advantage in the pass rush and should have dominated far more than he did at the collegiate level. He’s a 24-year-old rookie and has a recent knee injury to monitor.
