In all fairness, even though none of them were guys I wanted and probably you didn't either, the first 3 picks I rate as good picks. The fourth is the head scratcher they have to teach to catch, The fifth could wind up being a good safety and special teams player. The sixth is another head scratcher but the seventh could be a pretty good rotational edge. The CoonCat agrees.

Here's the weird thing for me. The third pick, I hate the fit but really like the player. The fourth pick, I love the fit but really don't like the player.

What I mean is this: AZ Thomas could end up being a really good CB, perhaps a long-term starter, but I'm not sure I would have gone this route with the current investment already made at CB. Smith fills a huge need, a WR who can provide the top-end speed the unit doesn't have, but the player is problematic with his awful hands.

Obviously tongue-in-cheek, but to a (very slight) degree, with speed it is true. I remember Wayne Chrebet talking in his book about his college coaches, and how he had one OC who would throw it deep at least once a quarter to keep the defense honest. In a way, Smith can do that. If he beats the D over the top, even if he doesn't catch it, they have to respect it enough to open up the rest of the offense.

The one thing to AZ Thomas's credit is that he is superb special teams player as well. I think that's where he will start.

Also true. If he doesn't catch one at least now and then using him as a decoy won't work for long.
