Delarrin closes to the ball quite well and possesses the hands to snatch throws away from his frame. He can deliver the big hit and isn't afraid to jump inside to slow the ball. Has good strength to tackle. Plays with high energy and is a tough-minded overachiever. He competes for the ball and has good anticipation skills and hand-eye coordination. Has good instincts and anticipation reads and reacts with discipline. Dangerous with the ball in his hands. He is quicker than he is fast but has a burst to close in zone coverage and plays physical at the line in man. Turner-Yell strong hands to make plays on the ball, effective blitzer who shows well-coached technique and awareness.

Areas for Improvement

Inconsistent getting off of blocks. He can be a step slow to react when a quarterback comes back to his side of the field late in progression. Has tense ankles and hips with choppy footwork when attempting to redirect and doesn't always look natural changing directions. Needs to tighten his angles in pursuit. Needs to show better tackling technique to consistently finish.

2018, played in seven of last eight contests after missing first six due to injury and finished season with 12 tackles and he registered five tackles (three solo) and one pass breakup at No. 12 West Virginia (11/23). He recorded one tackle against Oklahoma State (11/10) and made five tackles (two solo) at Texas Tech (11/3). He had one tackle in collegiate debut at TCU (10/20).

Started all 13 of his games at strong safety, in 2019 and missed CFP Semifinal at the Peach Bowl vs. No. 1 LSU due to injury. He ranked second on team with 75 tackles (60 solo) and registered 5.5 tackles for loss, three pass breakups and one forced fumble. He had eight tackles, a forced fumble, a pass breakup and a team-high-tying 3.0 TFLs in Big 12 Championship win vs. No. 8 Baylor (12/7) and recorded five tackles (0.5 TFL) at Oklahoma State (11/30). Turner-Yell’s processing skills are noticeable on tape, as he is always in the right place at the right time, especially in the run game. His shoulders and hips line up on a slender frame. Despite his skinny frame, he shows he has the strength and physicality needed to play the safety position. He’s willing to come up and make a play at the line of scrimmage utilizing his solid play recognition skills. Turner-Yell has a knack for recognizing route concepts which is one of his most substantial assets as a prospect. His tackling technique is something out of a clinic, as he is great at wrapping up and waiting for reinforcements with more prominent ball carriers. He comes flying up to the line of scrimmage on run plays, looking to make a tackle which shows he is engaged and alert in all play scenarios.
